SELF-ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES INDICATOR:
SCENARIO: In collaboration with our high schools Broadcast/Video Production (BVP) teacher, the SLMSs, and the schools instructional coach the area of reading comprehension was targeted as an area that needs improvement school wide. The Broadcast/Video Production curriculum offered at the school allowed for collaboration to create the Digital Video Book Trailer/Reviews in order to improve student reading skills and comprehension by encouragement from peers demonstrated in the videos. The unit is taught in conjunction with the Introductory level of Broadcast/Video production when students are learning how to create basic videos using basic equipment and software, this seemed to be the perfect area to collaborate.
CONNECTION TO LOCAL OR STATE STANDARDS: Georgia Content Area: Broadcast/Video Production I Grade Level Expectations: Ninth-Twelfth Grade Standard: ACCT-BVP1-11. Students will investigate and demonstrate ethical use of equipment and storytelling through their productions.
a. Demonstrate ability to give and follow directions. b. Demonstrate ability to function as a team member. c. Demonstrate strong work ethics. d. Describe basic ethics including broadcast law (i.e., copyright, plagiarism, etc.)
OVERVIEW: In BVP courses, students learn how to create video presentations encompassing text, audio, and video. Often students struggle to find ideas and inspiration for video projects. Inquiry Questions: (teacher focuses on these questions during the classroom lessons) 1. Why is evaluating what youve read important? 2. What can you do to encourage others to read a book that you have enjoyed? 3. Why is a digital video book review something that others will take into consideration when choosing a book? 4. Do you think that this project will encourage other students to read more? 5. What might happen to students reading abilities if they read more? FINAL PRODUCT: Upon completion of the Digital Video Book Trailer/Review lesson, students will upload their completed video to their schools section of SchoolTube.com. The students will also be asked to complete a KWL showing what they thought they knew going into the lesson, what they wanted to know, and what they learned concerning the importance of reading, encouraging others to read, and how reading skills and comprehension can be improved through reading. LIBRARY LESSON(S): Addressing class initially as a whole group, the SLMS will introduce the KWL and the class will take time to complete the first two columns of the KWL. The SLMS will explain the equipment and software available in the media center to help students complete their video and how to upload their completed videos to the schools section of SchoolTube.com
ASSESSMENT Product: The actual completed Digital Video Book Trailer/Review project submission is proof of the students sharing knowledge and participating ethically and productively as members of our democratic society. The students completion of the KWL chart will also show what they have learned about the importance of reading, encouraging others to read, and how reading skills and comprehension can be improved through reading. A test based on the process of and use of equipment and software to create the completed video will be given. Process: SLMS and teacher observe students during the presentation asking questions for the students to answer and answering questions that the students have. Student Self-Questioning:
Did I understand my task? Did I listen carefully enough to find the information I need? Did I use information I already knew?
INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN Resources Students Will Use: KWL Chart Handouts with Directions Internet and other library and classroom resources INSTRUCTION/ACTIVITIES Direct Instruction: As the students come into the room, the KWL will be displayed using the LCD projector and screen. Individual handouts will also be provided to each student. The SLMS will introduce the KWL and the process for completing it. After the students fill out the first two columns as a class, the presentation will be made by the SLMS. Questions will be asked of the students and student questions will be answered throughout the presentation. The SchoolTube.com website will be presented to the students and example projects will be shown to the class. Students should also be filling in the last column of the KWL during the presentation. Students will be given the handouts with step by step directions.
Modeling and Guided Practice: The teacher and SLMS will go over the paperwork with the students and help them to fill it out appropriately. The teacher and SLMS will answer questions as needed. Independent Practice: Students will be asked to review other examples of Digital Video Book Trailers/Reviews . The completed KWL is the Ticket out the door for the lesson. Sharing and Reflecting: During the last 10 minutes students will be asked to share examples of Digital Video Book Trailers/Reviews on SchoolTube or to ask questions concerning things they are not sure about. Students will turn in their KWL to the SLMS as they leave the room. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING AND RESULTS Assessment: While the students were not able to complete a Digital Video Book Trailer/Review during the lesson, students were assessed on their understanding of the process of creating a Digital Video Book Trailer/Review, its relation to improving reading skills and comprehension, and their ability to adhere to the concepts as part of their finished product that came later in the class. Students in each class attempted to produce an submission to SchoolTube.com. The KWL is a great way to get students thinking about the subject at hand and to see what they may already know. All students completed the KWL, however some were more in depth than others. Results: It was obvious that some students thought that the KWL was beneath them, but I think if I had told the students that they would be able to use the KWL as a cheat sheet on the test, they may have participated more. REFLECTION I think students were surprised to learn about the level of reading skills and comprehension within SEHS and how reading more can help improve skills and comprehension. I knew that my presentation of how to complete this project and everything involved in it would take up most of the time allotted for this project and that students would most likely not finish their project. We have decided that this will be an ongoing project and as students finish, they can complete another project or help others complete their project.
While collaboration can be a daunting task, it is helpful to have a report with the teacher when collaborating. It is also important to have a firm understanding of the standards to be addressed in the class. I have worked with everyone involved in this project in the past, and I felt good about working with them again. In the future, I will make it a point to meet a few times with the teacher beforehand especially if I do not know them well and to review their course standards.
