Lesson Idea Name: All About the Water Cycle

Grade Level/Content Area: 4th Grade/Science
Content Standard Addressed: S4E3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to
demonstrate the pathways and state changes of the water cycle.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Creative Communicator – 1.6.c. Students able to do by the end of this lesson?
communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively
Students will be able to obtain, evaluate, and
by creating or using a variety of digital objects such
as visualizations, models or simulations. communicate information to demonstrate the
pathways and state changes of the water cycle.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? (Add 1 to 2 sentences stating the learning
outcome you would expect students to achieve using the technology tool selected. This goal will be
shared with students so make it clear, concise, and kid-friendly.)
I can obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the pathways and stages of the water
cycle.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: My Simple Show

Description of Software: My Simple Show is a simple is a digital video creating platform that allows
users to create videos in an easy and user-friendly format. Users input their text and My Simple
Show recognizes key words and suggests animations and images that correlate with the text.
Teachers can use this software to create educational videos to introduce new content or review
previously learned content. Students can use the software to create videos demonstrating what they
have learned and to present research about different topics.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

✘ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

✘ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

✘ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.

newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:

To begin the lesson, I would tell students that they are going to be learning about process called The
Water Cycle. I will ask them where they think the water comes from when they turn the knobs of a
faucet. I will entertain several responses. Then I will introduce The Water Cycle Video. I will project
the video on the board and as we go through the slides, I will pause to explain, answer any questions
they may have, and clear up any misconceptions or confusion. At the conclusion of the video, I will
tell them that they will now have an opportunity to create their own video using the software that I
used. That is where I will introduce them to the My Simple Show platform. I will tell them that they
will now have an opportunity to create a video to illustrate their understanding and what they
learned in the mini lesson about The Water Cycle, but first they will need to do some more research
on the topic. Each student will have his or her Chromebook. I will have created a Google Classroom
that the students will have access to and will already know how to log into from previous lessons.
Inside the Google Classroom will be several links to information about the Water Cycle that they will
use to write down notes in their science journals. I will give the students enough time to jot down at
least 5 facts about The Water Cycle. I will then pull one group of students and have them access the
link to My Simple Show. I will guide them through the process of logging into their student accounts.
Once they are in, I will support them through creating their own Water Cycle videos, providing
feedback throughout the process. I will repeat this process with all groups. The lesson will be
concluded with a turn and talk with a partner about what they learned. Completed videos will be
published on our school’s website and on the morning announcements.

Managing student learning: The use of My Simple Show will allow students to shift from passive to
active social learners because they will go from a teacher lead whole group lesson to independent
workers and then small group workers where they can collaborate with each other about ideas.
Time on task will be monitored through the use of a timer for the students to jot down their 5 facts
into their science notebooks as well as time for them to input the facts into their videos. Students
must present evidence of their notes in their science journals before they will be able to create their
videos. During the conclusion, I will listen to partner pairs as they discuss what they have learned
and take note of any opportunities to reteach or remediate misconceptions.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
The technology tool, My Simple Show supports all learners because it allows for multiple means of
expression. Students are able to type their text or upload audio if typing is a challenge. They are also given
opportunities to collaborate with their peers in partner pairs and small groups. Teacher support is also
embedded throughout the lesson. This lesson enhances the learning experience because it allows students to
produce an artifact of learning that is not the normal paper and pencil. It allows for individual creativity and
for each student to be able to express themselves. Also, subtitles and audio are included to add additional
layers of support in the learning process. This tool supports engagement through the interactive nature of the
software and the ease in which students can create real videos

learning by allowing for creativity and self -expression through the learning process and by providing
accessibility for all students. The part of the lesson I look forward to implementing is the students
actually creating their own videos. I am excited to see how creative they can be and to see if the
creating of their videos enhances their understanding of the content.
