able to create a short video recording of
themselves explaining an impact and a solution
for pollution.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The learning goal for this lesson is to be able to identify types of pollution and how they impact our
lives and environment. Another goal is to create a video based on information the students have
learned. Students will have the opportunity to present their videos to their parents and caregivers.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: iMovie App

Description of Software: iMovie is a video editing software application created and developed by
Apple. It includes options to record, crop, and rotate video clips, enhance color settings, and change

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

Lesson idea implementation:
For this lesson students will be introduced to a topic by reading a fun factual children’s book called
Ocean! Waves for All. Then we will have a class discussion about types of pollution and how we can
do our part to help our oceans and planets. Students will have some ideas on paper from listening to
the podcast with their family. After this I will show them an appropriate video about how pollution
affects our oceans. I will then explain to them that they will create a video using iMovie to share
what they learned. They will use the iPads available in the classroom/multimedia center. Each group
will have 10 minutes to complete their recordings. While students wait their turn to use the iPad
they will plan what they want to say and show in their video, they can use this time to practice their
script. I will show them how to use the app and have students work in pairs. They will have to each
talk for no less than 50 seconds, their video should include an example of pollution, how that
impacts the ocean, and how they can help to make a difference. They can also present any of their
drawings that they drew at home in their video recording. Students should save their videos and
they will be presented at a family night at the end of the week. I will assist students in setting up
their iPads and make my way around the classroom to ensure that all students are prepared.
Feedback will be given throughout the learning and creating process. We will end the lesson by
watching all the videos and then I will ask students to write 1-2 sentences or draw a picture about
something they learned from their peers’ videos.
Managing student learning:
This lesson will cause a shift from passive to active learners as students will be taking the
information they learned and creating a video recording of themselves presenting the information
and learning.
Students will develop a plan and have it drawn and written out before they create their video.
Students will work in pairs to create their videos. Students will have approximately 10 minutes to
create, record, and check their videos before submitting them.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
This activity and the tools support representation because students will present information in
different ways which will access their understanding. This lesson also focusses on action and
expression because it allows all students to participate, create, learn, and share. Students must draw
and write short sentences as well as present ideas verbally giving them a variety of ways to express
their understanding.
Reflection:
I believe this activity will bring awareness to my students about the world around them and how
something that may be so far away from them can still have an impact on their life, community, and
even their food. This lesson is intended for younger students so there is repetition and a variety of
tools and visuals being used to grab their attention and keep them motivated.
I look forward to helping my students create a video, I think this will be very empowering and
exciting to them and I believe they will enjoy watching their creations with their peers and families.
