and texts that give information.

solutions.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? The goal for this lesson is for the students to
create a short podcast telling me the difference between stories and informational texts.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify for Podcasters

Description of Software: Spotify for Podcasters is a free online platform for people to create
podcasts. This is a great tool for teachers and students as it is easy to use.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

✘ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

✘ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
We will have a class discussion about components that make up stories and the components of

informational texts. Once we finish this, we will create a class Venn diagram comparing and
contrasting stories and information texts. At this point the students will be released to write a script
about the difference of texts that tell stories and texts that give information. This script can be
funny, serious, or informative. The students can be creative as long as they convey the difference
between the two texts. They will then use Spotify for Podcasters to record these differences. To
complete the lesson, I will ask a couple volunteers to share their podcast.
Managing student learning: The lesson will start passively but still social as we have a class discussion
about stories and informational texts. As the students begin working on their podcasts, they must have a
script before recording. This will ensure students have a plan before starting and keep them on task. This
lesson is a good mix between passive and active learning as the students will be creating their own artifact.
However, there is not a lot of socializing embedded in the lesson.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
The lesson and technology standard will support students through action and expression. Students
are being provided with options for executive functions as they are managing information and
resources. Students will be expected to take handwritten notes which supports learners who need to
handwrite their ideas. The class Venn diagram supports visual learners as they can visualize the
differences between stories and information texts. Finally, creating the podcast supports Kinesthetic
and auditory learners by allowing them to verbalize what they have learned through a hands-on
activity.
Reflection: This lesson will impact student learning by allowing them some creative freedom. I’m
excited to have the students create their own podcasts. I believe the students will get excited to try
out another online platform where they can be creative.
