What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will conduct research projects to build knowledge about a chosen topic.
Selected Instructional Software Tool:

Description of Software: Flip Video

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing

Lesson idea implementation:
First, I will introduce the lesson by displaying a Flip video research presentation of my own. I will present it on
the smartboard for the class to see. The student learning goal and objectives will be addressed. The class will
see how to navigate Flip Video through my presentation. I will answer questions at the end of the
presentation to avoid misconceptions or confusion. Before the students use the technology tool, the students
will create a written plan using a storyboard as a guide for their Flip video. The storyboard allows the students
to pick any topic of their interests and organize their thoughts and ideas. The students will be allowed to work
in pairs to brainstorm but must work on separate storyboards. There will be a timer set for 8 minutes on the
smartboard for the students to see and create their Flip video outline using the storyboard. I will walk around
the room and make myself available if students are having trouble organizing their ideas. I will provide advice
if needed and or recommendations. After the 8 minutes, I will conclude the present-day lesson by having the
students use Flip video to create their 2–4-minute video based on the standard and topic of their choosing.
There will be a timer set for 25 minutes on the smartboard for the students to create their Flip videos
individually. Students will be allowed to move around the room to record their videos or record their Flip
video at home. If students choose to record the video at home, the 25 minutes will be spent researching their
topics. The next day, I will provide feedback on a rubric for each student as they present their Flip video to the
class or to assigned groups for comfort.
Managing student learning:
Technology will be used in a way that gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts by
making a storyboard. A story board is a written plan before beginning a project, it acts as an outline and
organizer. The students will also be involved in collaborative pairs as they help each other through the
storyboard to brainstorm ideas. There will be a timer set on the smartboard for all students to see as they
work through their storyboard (8 minutes) and their product creations (25 minutes).
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
These activities and the technology tool I selected support and enhance the learning experience for students
in the classroom through the Action and Expression principle of Universal Design for Learning. Action and
Expression is for students to show what they know or have learned. Flip allows students to create a video to
display their knowledge and create a product. The students are organizing and expressing their ideas and
planning/performing a task through the use of the technology tool.
Reflection:
After designing this lesson, I feel the activities I created will impact student learning by giving students the
opportunity to create something of their own and teach others about their interests. I look forward to
implementing the Flip video portion of the lesson because it will allow the students to be proud of what they
have created and share it with their peers as they are also implementing technology presentation skills to
show their video. I will be excited to learn more about my students and implement what I have learned about
them into future lessons for culturally responsive teaching.
