Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: What’s with multiplication?

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade Math
Content Standard Addressed: Students will interpret products of whole numbers as the total
number of objects in # groups of # objects each.

Technology Standard Addressed: Students will be able to choose an appropriate platform to meet
the desired objectives of their communication or creation.

Guiding Question(s): How do we multiply using groups and number of objects in each group?

Selected Technology Tool: EdPuzzle

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or
Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven and student-led. Students should have “Voice and Choice” in the activities,
selecting the topic of study and determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the
standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Your student’s projects must be shared locally or globally to meet this level.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): EdPuzzle can support all of my students by being able
differentiate instruction. English Language Learners (ELL) can express their understanding by using
their background knowledge to create their own video. This technology tools provides students with
multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement. Students are provided with multiple
means of representation by including videos, images, questions, and notes within this tool. Students
can express themselves by creating their own video and adding features within the video. I can
provide multiple means of engagement by giving each student a laptop and going through the video
at their own pace while answering the questions.
Lesson idea implementation: Students will be introduced to multiplication by going over our guided

video on BrainPOP (https://www.brainpop.com/math/numbersandoperations/multiplication/). After

the video, I will go over any questions that the students may have and show more examples of how
to use multiplication on the Smart Board. I will introduce EdPuzzle to the students and discuss the
importance of using it. I will show students my EdPuzzle example and allow the class to go through
and answer the questions individually; this is how student learning will be assessed. I will give
students the opportunity to create their own EdPuzzle by finding other videos on
grouping/multiplication and putting their own notes or questions within their EdPuzzle; this will take
1-2 days of school to complete. I will conclude the lesson once I give students directions on creating
their own EdPuzzle.

Once students complete their EdPuzzle, students will get into groups and share their videos with
their group. The final product will be used to differentiate learning by providing a variety of ways for
students to learn and answer questions (multiple choice, audio, video, images, links). I will extend
the student learning to a higher level by sharing their EdPuzzles with other 3rd grade students.
Reflective Practice: I feel that the lessons will impact student learning by expanding their knowledge
on grouping and knowing how to use EdPuzzle. I can extend students’ learning by introducing
division, which is when students can find the amount in each group or finding how many groups can
be created. A few other technology tools that I can use to enhance this project is Wakelet or Sway.
