Lesson Idea Name: Multiplication Fluency

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 3rd

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.OA.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using
strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40,
one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations.

with

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered learner. C. use technology to seek feedback
that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice
or Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and
determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes

more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Multiplication.com has many tools that will help students
increase their fluency with multiplication facts. The different games and activities provided
throughout the site will grasp students' attention and keep them engaged. The website also includes
multi-player games which enhances the learning environment by allowing students to collaborate with
one another. Every student may not be at the same level which is why I appreciate this website
allowing teachers to individualize the teaching sequence for each child. This feature supports each
child’s learning by acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses and giving material that adequately
supports them. This tool supports representation because some learners may respond better to
information being presented in an interactive format. Lastly, this tool gives students a different way to
display their understanding than the traditional test or quiz. Students can show their understanding
through games, online quizzes, review activities. Overall, Multiplacation.com is a great tool that
allows for technology integration while supporting the UDL three principles.

Lesson idea implementation:  I believe this tool will be used more as a unit of study to make sure
students are mastering multiplication. This instructional software can be introduced after a lecture
teaching students the fundamentals of multiplication. I will be more of a facilitator while students use
this website to practice their multiplication facts. Students should use this website for at least thirty
minutes a week to reach multiplication fluency. Multiplication.com allows for students to be assessed
with every activity they complete. This information is then sent to the teacher so I will be able to
receive an analysis of how students are doing. After viewing the date of students' progress, I will work
with students who are not performing well on the website and offer them one on one tutorial to better
understand the concept. The activities in Multiplication.com would fall in the category of
remembering in Bloom's Taxonomy levels. I would eventually introduce two step multiplication and
word problems including multiplication to help students advance to the apply level of Bloom’s
Taxonomy. Students then can apply the information they gained on Mutliplaction.com and use it to
carry out the procedure of solving multiplication word problems.

I would conclude the lesson by separating students into groups of two and giving each student a
multiplication problem. Student A will have to explain how he/she came up with a solution to student
B and student B will have to explain how he/she came up with a solution to students A. Students will
have to create a short presentation and present their solutions to the class. This will give students an
opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, collaborate with others, and give me an opportunity to
assess the students’ progress. I will write feedback to students on a notecard with positive comments
and areas of improvement if needed. The conclusion project of this standard should take
approximately two class periods, one class period for students to solve their problems and create their
presentation and another class period for students to show their solutions to the class.

Reflective Practice: These activities can impact student learning by giving them additional practice,
engaging activities, multiple means of expression, collaboration, and individualized learning material.
Practice makes perfect when it comes to multiplication, therefore, Multiplication.com will really
instill multiplication facts into children. Engaging activities will make students excited about learning.

Multiple means of expression is displayed in this lesson by giving students multiple ways to
demonstrate their knowledge. Collaboration is a very impactful tool because it gives students the
chance to learn information from one another that they may have not received from the teacher. I
could further extend the lesson by asking students to complete a project explaining real world
examples of when they would use multiplication. This will give students the opportunity to apply their
knowledge to real world situations and require students to think outside of the classroom. Other
technology tools that could be used are Google Slide, PowerPoint, or Prezi for presentation purposes.
