Lesson Idea Name: States of Matter
Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd Grade, Science
Content Standard Addressed:

S2P1: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties of matter and changes that
occur in objects.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson:
1.3 Knowledge Constructor I would like students to know the difference
Students critically curate a variety or resources between a solid, liquid, and gas. The
using digital tools to construct knowledge, characteristics of each and how a solid turn into
produce creative artifacts and make meaningful a liquid and how a liquid tuns into a gas by using
learning experiences for themselves and others real life examples.
.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? Students will be able to name and describe
the three states of matter and the changes that can occur with each by researching and creating a
video on the subject.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Adobe Creative Cloud Express

Description of Software: The Adobe Creative Cloud Express is a quick and easy web and mobile
application that is perfect for use in the classroom. It is free to use for students and is designed to
work within Adobe’s standard data privacy protections and other features designed for educational
content.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning

it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
To begin we will review the learning goal for the lesson. We will then discuss solids, liquids, and
gases and provide some examples of each in the real world. We will also discuss the
characteristics of each state of matter. Next, in class we will experiment with changing states of
matter by mixing, heating, or cooling objects. After that, students will collaborate with a partner
to research the internet and create a video about states of matter. The requirements for the video
are below.
1. Provide two examples each for a solid, liquid, and a gas.
2. Provide a brief definition of a solid, liquid, and gas.
3. Pick one state of matter and explain or show a picture of how it can change by being
mixed, heated, or cooled.
Once videos are complete, each group will share their video with the class.
Managing student learning:
Allowing students to create their own video for this lesson will get them engaged in the content and allow
them to take an active role in their own learning. They will be researching and looking for information that
will help to reach the learning objective. The lesson will include teacher led instruction and then time for
students to create the video based on the knowledge they have obtained about states of matter and how
they can change. Allowing student to share their work will promote a higher level of research and additional
content for the rest of the class.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
The tool for this lesson allows students to provide visual information via text, graphs, and images.
By providing multiple options for the videos will represent the information in a way that all students
can comprehend. In this lesson students have the option to learn the material in different ways
such a teacher lead instruction and discussion, in class experiments, collaboration, and creation of
content.

Reflection:
This lesson will enhance students learning by allowing them to be creative with the knowledge
they have gained on states of matter. They will get to collaborate with a fellow student and then
share what they have created with the class. I look forward to using this tool in my future
classroom as an additional support for learning.
