Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Moon Phase E-Book

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S6E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
the effects of the relative positions of the sun, Earth, and moon.

1. Develop and use a model to demonstrate the phases of the moon by showing the relative

positions of the sun, Earth, and moon.

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The standard asks students to create a model of the moon phase and the students will achieve this by
creating a digital presentation that demonstrates the 8 moon phases. The students will have a choice of which
productivity tool to utilize in their presentation. The students will receive a checklist for the project so that
they can self-monitor if they have the required features in their presentation. Allowing the students to choose
the productivity tool will allow all students the chance to choose what they feel will allow them to be most
successful and comfortable. This project will allow students to meet the standard while moving away from
the traditional drawing of the moon phases.

Lesson idea implementation:

The lesson will begin with the teacher and students reviewing the 8 moon phases. The teacher will

explain the assignment by showing the teacher created example on Sway. The project should take
one and a half class periods allowing for presentations at the end of the second day. Students will be
assessed using a provided checklist. The checklist will have a list of items that the students must
include in their projects.
The product will show me which students are able to move on from moon phases and which
students need to continue to review. If a student is ready for extension, they will create a short story or
comic strip to go with their presentation. This story will be from the moon’s perspective as it goes through the
phases of the lunar cycle. In the story they will discuss the “dark side” of the moon that we do not get to see
as the moon goes through the phases.
Reflective Practice:
This lesson will take a standard that typically includes students drawing a model on paper and
provide a technological twist. Because this lesson is at the beginning of the school year, students will
be able to grow more comfortable with the use of productivity tools while exploring tools that they
may not have seen before. In order to enhance this project, a digital drawing tool may be added to
allow students to draw the moon phases in a digital format.
