Lesson Idea Name: The Life of a Tulip

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of
different living organisms.
b. Plan and carry out an investigation of the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a seed
and by recording changes over a period of time.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge/3

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Journey North

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
This lesson will be a great way to get the students excited and engaged in learning. Through the Journey
North website, we can “plant” our own tulips in garden and there will be updates on our flower that we
planted. As a class, we will request to plant some seeds and then we will have the chance to view the life of
our flower. Each week I will give the students a chance to check up on our flower to see if it had grown.
When the students take the time to observe our plant, I will ask them to write about what they observed
on that day in great detail.
The students will get the chance to draw what they observe. After I let the students observe the flower
themselves then we will observe it as a class and we will all talk about what we noticed had changed. This
will build up each week as the flower grows. The students will have a strong grasp over this topic because
of the continued observations that we will consistently have.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
The students would each need a laptop, or a tablet to each have their own view of the flowers.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The student will have collaboration with their classmates. The students will get the chance to
talk with others about what they observed and what they think might happen next.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The students will be presenting data on what they
observed each week about the growing flowers. The students will also have a chance to draw what
they observed on that day.

c. Higher-order thinking: What do you think will happen next time we take a look at our flower? What
do you notice about the growing flower?

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product:
The students work about the life events of a flower could be useful to people that are interested in
growing their own plant.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson involves a lot of effort from the students. This activity pushes
the students to active and engaged in what is happening. This lesson get students excited and interested in
what is happening throughout the plants life cycle.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies -Students will not publish their name, age, or
location to any network for the safety of the students. I will also have permission slips on hand to make sure
that their parents are ok with their work being published online

Reflective Practice: This lesson is a great way to push students be engaged and to enjoy learning. This lesson
gives the students a chance be involved and give observations on what they noticed. The students also get a
chance to think about what might happen next to the flower. This is a fun activity that will educate and
interest the students all at once.
