Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Solids and Liquids Oh My!!!

Objectives:
Students will be able to understand and define what the properties of solids and liquids along with
what they are and do.

Students will be able to express the difference between solids, liquids and the properties of
magnets.

State Standards: Standard 2.P.3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the
observable properties of solids and liquids and the special properties of magnets.

2.P.3A.2 Develop and use models to exemplify how matter can be mixed together and separated
again based on the properties of the mixture.

2.P.3A.3 Conduct structured investigations to test how adding or removing heat can cause
changes in solids and liquids.

Context: I am teaching this lesson in order for the kids to be able to know about solids,
liquids, gases and properties of magnets. The kids should know what matter is and how it is
in our world and how it affects us and the environment. Today the kids are going to take
time to be able to learn about the states of matter and what they do and what they are. By
the end of the day the kids should know how to explain a solid, liquid, gas and also the
properties of magnets.
Data: The students will be grouped based on the previous assignment that they did they did in the
last class period that they had with me, or if they were not able to complete the assignment, they
can use the exit ticket that they did at the end of the class period.

Procedures:
Introduction (5-10/5ish minutes): The kids will be able to come into the classroom, put
their bookbags into their cubby and sit down at their desks. Once the do this they will get out
their notebooks, or computers. Which every they did the exit ticket that the did the exit ticket
they did the day before. (They didn’t have to turn it in because they knew we were going to be
going over it the next day.) Once they get all of their supplies out, I will tell them about the day
and how we will be doing a rotation day, they already know what this is but it always good to
remind them in case they forget. Which means the class will be splitting into 3 groups. One with
me going over solids’ liquids, gases and properties of magnets (if we have extra time because
this is for tomorrows lesson), one is collaborative where they will be working together on a
worksheet and a game and lastly, they will be working by themselves on their computers
watching a video and if they have extra time doing an IXL assignment (not going to be be
graded.) After I finish telling the kids what we are going to be doing today I will put them into
their groups, (they should know their groups because we have done this before.) I will then tell
the kids that are in my group to come and meet with me up at the board and to bring their
notebooks and pencils to be able to take notes and the other groups will do as I have instructed
them (It is posted on the online platform that I use in my classroom.)

Teacher Directed (20minutes): In this part of the lesson, I will be teaching the kids about
solids, liquids, gases and if we have time the properties of magnets. I have made a google slide
show to be able to show the kids and let them take notes from me. Although 20 minutes seems
like a lot of time it really isn’t because of course the kids are going to want to ask questions and
want to be interactive. While the kids are taking the notes, I will take time to walk around the
class to see if the kids in the other groups might need help or anything of that sort. I will then
come back to my group and see if they need any more help or have any other questions about the
topics that they learned. Hopefully if the kids take good notes and take in the information it will
help them with the other 2 rotations.

Collaborative (15-20 minutes): In this group the kids will be working together to be able
to work on a worksheet that they have on their computers. The kids know how to print from their
computers so one of the kids in the group will go to the printer and get the worksheets from
there. The worksheet talks about solids, liquids, and gases. This is able to help the kids learn
more about the types of matter but hopefully in a fun way. If the kids are able to finish the
worksheet early (which they probably will) there is a game link posted where they can go and
play a game. The game is able to also help them learn more about solids, liquids, and gases. If
the kids do not get to the game that is okay, it is just something for them to do once they are done
or have extra free time. At the end of the class the kids will turn in the worksheet that they did in
this rotation, not for a grade but just to be able to see what the kids are able to retain and
remember.

Independent Digital (20 minutes): In this rotation the kids are able to have the
opportunity to work by themselves. (Of course, if the need help, they can ask the person that is
sitting next to them.) The kids will first take out their computers and watch the video that is
linked, they will take out their headphones and watch the video silently. While they are watching
the video, they should be taking their own notes on the information that they think is important.
The video is about 3-4 minutes long so this part of the rotation will go by pretty fast. Secondly
after they do this, they will go onto IXL and do the assignment that I have posted for them. This
will be taken up as a grade, but all they have to do is screenshot their goal (80 minimum) to be
able to receive credit. This activity should take them a good amount of time and make sure that
they know the content that they have been learning about all day in each of the rotations.
Closure (15-20minutes): In this part of the day the kids have been through all of the
rotations and had the opportunity to take some really good notes and learn some valuable
information. They will have the opportunity to be able to play a game as a whole class. The game
is for me to be able to see if the kids were able to take in the information while also making it fun
for them. This is able to help me see what I need to change or adjust for the next time that I am
able to do rotations. The game is not for a grade or anything like that. After we play the game, I
have made exit tickets for the kids to be able to do to leave the class. These are not being graded
but just to see what the kids enjoyed about the rotation system and what they might have
changed. Although they are young, they still have a say in what happens in the classroom.

Rationale:
IXL : https://www.ixl.com/science/grade-2/identify-solids-and-liquids
This piece of multimedia is very helpful and valuable to both students and teachers. This
piece of multimedia is able to help support my objectives and state standards because of the
information that the kids are going to be able to learn about. Not only does this app/website have
the availability to adapt to my lesson plan but it can do so much more. It has any subject and any
grade level that you might need. The app is really easy to use and navigate. Even when I was a
student in high school, I remember using IXL and thought it was one of the easiest websites to
navigate. All of the questions that were being asked to go right along with the lesson and content
that the kids are learning in class. The website/app is able to adapt to the questions that you are
answering. Let’s say that you get a bunch of questions wrong the website/app is able to identify
the questions you are getting wrong and give you similar ones to be able work and improve on
lesson.

Video: https://youtu.be/JQ4WduVp9k4
This piece of multimedia is able to show the kids what solids, liquids and gaeses are.
Althought they have had a lot of practice with these terms it never hurts to try and put a video.
Kids nowadays are so prone to looking at a screen that is is just smart to add it to their school
day and lessons. Not saying that technology is good for kids, they are just do used to it. Also who
doesn’t love videos that is talking about science!!! This piece of multimedia is able to support my
student objectives and state standards by what the content is talking about. The little girl in this
video is able to explain the states of matter in a way that the kids can relate to and also takin in
the information and understand. Even though the kids are young the video is giving the
information in a way that they are able to understand it. The way that this can be used for
different types of users is by the way that the video is being portrayed. Not many kids can keep
their eyes on a whiteboard so the video is able to help the kids who like using technology more
rather than just me teaching.

This website is also really helpful for kids and teachers. The kids are able to search up
and find quizzes (which are more like games in a sense) and play them to able to learn the
content that they need. Teachers and also the kids are able to make their own quizzes if they
wanted too. This way they can have freedom of what is on the quizzes and make It however they
feel most comfortable. This multimedia is able to support my student objectives and the state
standard by the information that is on them and the way that the website is set up. It is very easy
to navigate and use. You can just search up a lesson or whatever you might be learning about,
and a quiz will pop up, and if you don’t like any of the ones that someone else has made, you can
make a quiz for yourself or others. This multimedia is able to be used for different learners in the
way that the kids can look up any quiz that they like. The way that the website is made is that
different people make all different quizzes and post them onto the website for other people to use,
and this can come in handy when it comes to different learners and users.
