Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Letters to Words

Objectives:
● Students will be able to construct words/sentences.
● Students will be able to recognize that words are read from left to right.
● Students will be able to locate letters on iPads.

State Standards:
● Standard 6: Write independently, legibly, and routinely for a variety of tasks, purposes,
and audiences over short and extended time frames.
○ 6.1 With guidance and support, write routinely and persevere in writing tasks for
a variety of purposes and audiences.
○ 6.2 Print upper-and lower-case letters.
○ 6.3 Recognize that print moves from left to right and that there are spaces
between words.
○ 6.4 Locate letter keys on an electronic device.

Context:
This lesson is a kindergarten English lesson about writing. I am teaching this lesson
because it is important for the students to know how to take letters and turn them into words.
This is a skill that students will need in order to read in the future. Before this lesson, the
students learned how to create words, using letters in the alphabet. This means that students will
be coming into this lesson being able to use skills to write independently. This lesson will
prepare students to create words and then eventually create sentences.

Data:
Students will be divided into three groups based on how well they knew the material
from the previous lesson. They will be in a group that is high, middle, or low-level based on the
results from an exit slip from the last class. In this lesson, the student’s learning data will be
collected from an assignment with questions about the assignment asking how well they
understand the material and if they have any questions. I will gather the data to create future
groups of students who are at the same level of understanding, and students will be able to work
together to figure out answers to questions.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
Students will come into the classroom, put away their bookbags and grab any
materials they will need. I will have these materials written on the whiteboard. I
will begin by reviewing and going over some examples of upper and lowercase
letters and when they are needed. I will also review to make sure they know that
words are read from left to right, and there are spaces in between words. I will put
these review examples/questions on the SmartBoard. After this I will explain what
they will be doing in each station, and I will assign them to a group. I will also
give brief explanations on how to use the tools that we will be using.

We will start by talking about what we know already about words. I will ask the
students which letter(s) should be capitalized in a specific sentence that I provide.
Students will watch a short video/song on YouTube called “Writing is Cool!” to
help them review again. I will ask the students what they learned from the video
or if it helped them with some clarification. I will provide a few examples on a
whiteboard and they will have to tell me where they have to write an upper or a
lower case letter. I will also give them a whiteboard and they will have to write a
short sentence on something that they like to do.

Collaborative Station (15 minutes):

Students will be working with a partner to fill out a “Let Me Introduce Myself”
Worksheet and another worksheet where they can write what they can do around
the house, and they can color in the boxes. Students will be able to see what they
have in common, or don’t have in common, with other students. They will have
one person there so they can work together on words that they may not know.
They can use any previous notes or the iPad to figure out how to spell a word. If
students have time they can fill out the worksheet where they will be able to color
in what they can do to help around the house.

Independent Digital (15 minutes): https://www.commonsensemedia.org/app-reviews/this-

is-my-story-and-im-sticking-to-it
Students will go to their individual seats and play a learning game on their iPads.
This app is called “This Is My Story (And I’m Sticking To It).” This app helps
students get a hang of simple sentence structure by hearing and building stories
and filling in the blanks. They will be able to create their own story by dragging
things into blanks on the page. The stories will be saved for the students to go
back to later and to read it to the class.
Closure (20 minutes): https://kahoot.it/
At the end of the lesson all the students will play a Kahoot game on what they
have learned that day. I will be able to gather data based on the scores, and put
students in future groups depending on what they know or what they are having
trouble with. After this, I will randomly choose a few students to read their stories
that they made at the Independent Digital station. I will have a short exit slip with
a few questions from the lesson to help determine if any students are still having
difficulties with anything.

Rationale:
1. Kahoot https://kahoot.it/
I will create a Kahoot game for students to be able to review what they learned
during the day. This game will act as a quiz and a review, and I will be able to see
which students understand the material, and which ones are still having trouble
with it. This way I will be able to see which questions more students had trouble
with and we can spend more time on it next time.

2. This Is My Story (And I’m Sticking To It) App

https://www.commonsensemedia.org/app-reviews/this-is-my-story-and-im-sticking-to-it
This app is a fun and instructional app that allows students to hear and build
sentences. It also allows them to create stories by filling in blanks. This allows
them to be imaginative/creative. This app will help students get a hang of
sentence structures while allowing them to have fun with a game. They are able to
save their stories so they can read them at another time.

3. Writing Is Cool! Video https://www.bing.com/videos/search?

q=writing+video+for+kindergarten&qpvt=writing+video+for+kindergarten&view=detail&mid=B2EDF3C9889E747C9773B2EDF

%3Dwriting%2Bvideo%2Bfor%2Bkindergarten%26FORM%3DVDRE
This video is a song that is catchy and will help students remember how to write
correctly. It explains that the beginning of a sentence starts with a capital letter
and the end of a sentence has to have some sort of punctuation. It also shows that
there has to be spaces between words, and the video states for them not to forget a
“spacer” so they don’t forget to put a big enough space between the words.
