Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Grammar Lesson

Objectives:
Students will be able to…Students will be able to construct grammatically correct sentences.
Students will be able to… Students will be able to understand when to capitalize names, days of the
week, and months.

State Standards: ELA.C.4: Demonstrate command of standard English grammar and conventions
when writing.

Context: I am teaching this lesson because these are basic writing skills that every first grader
needs to learn. Knowing when to capitalize things such as days of the week, months, and names,
and knowing how to use the correct punctuation in sentences will improve students’ skill in
grammar. What comes before this lesson in the larger unit is learning what the types of
punctuation are such as a period, question mark, and exclamation point and learning why we
need to capitalize names of things and when to do so. Some previous knowledge students will be
bringing into this lesson are knowing what the months and days of the week are, which they
learn in kindergarten. What comes after this in the larger unit, is students learning to create more
advanced sentences for their writing and encouraging students to write more than just one or two
sentences in their writing as well. What I am teaching to prepare students for their next big
lesson topic are the basics of writing correct sentences.
Data: During this lesson, students will be grouped in small groups, the low group, the medium
group, and the high group. The data of these groups were based on how they performed on their
last grammar quiz. For this activity, data will be collected based on their involvement in the
teacher led station and then their work from the partnered station and the individual station.

Procedures:
Introduction (5 Minutes): I will start this introduction by reminding the students about
the recent grammar quiz we took. I will ask them if they remember what was on the quiz and if
they remember certain things they learned before taking this quiz. The next thing I will do is
introduce the station’s activity today. First, I will explain my rules and expectations for these
stations. These consist of no calling out while I am talking, inside voices while talking with your
partner, make sure the glue always has a cap on it when you are finished, make sure your tablet
is charged and you have a pair of headphones or earbuds, and make sure you have a pencil. After
the rules, I will let each table one by one, collect the materials and items they will need for the
stations, so nobody is getting up unnecessarily later. Lastly, I will be separating the groups into
three core groups. The Period group (the lower-level group), the Question Mark group (the
medium level group), and the Exclamation Point group (the higher-level group). This makes the
groups more fun and this way the students in other groups do not know what group what is and
just focus on their own group.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): During this station, I will have the students in each group
gather at the group table with me. This station is the station that will be based off what the
students in the group know or do not, which is the main reasoning for the low, medium, and high
group assortments. I will hand back each student’s previous grammar quiz that was the basis for
this station’s activity. After I hand these back, the students can ask me any type of question they
have. Even if they do not have questions, I will ask them things that I noticed the group may
have gotten wrong as a collective, such as why most students put a period at the end of this
sentence when the correct answer was an exclamation point. After questions, I will put up on the
Smart Board the correct way to make quiz corrections. This will allow students to fix their
mistakes and recognize what they did wrong. This also allows students to learn what they
answered incorrectly and gives me the opportunity to speak to the students one-on-one about
why they put the answer they did. I am doing this teacher directed, quiz correction station to
allow my students to learn from their mistakes and help them understand what they need to fix
one on one with me.

Collaborative (15 Minutes): In this station, the students will work with a partner. Each
pairing will be given this worksheet https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Daily-
Grammar-Fix-it-Sentences-Freebie-760008 and each student needs to have a pencil to be able to
write their names on them and to be able to write out their answers. Each pairing will have 15
minutes to complete this worksheet with their partners to turn into me at the end of the stations. I
am giving this worksheet because it gives good examples of what the students have been
learning in my classroom. Doing a collaborative station also helps my students learn to use their
brains together to figure out an assignment. Each student will work with a partner, but everyone
will have their own individual worksheet. This allows me to still let the students work with a
friend while also keeping track of everyone doing their own work. This also allows me to still
identify what each student knows themselves.

 Independent Digital (15 Minutes): For this Independent Digital assignment the students
will be tasked with three things. The first thing is to watch this fun YouTube video about
punctuation https://youtu.be/LdCOswMeXFQ. After they watch this video, the students
will log into their IXL account. I use IXL with my students because it is a good way to
review the skills we learn in class. Because we only have 15 minutes in this station (give
or take), the students only need to earn 75% to move on to the next assignment. They will
be doing XX.2 which is all about capitalization and they will be doing MM.6 which is all
about reviewing what punctuation goes at the end of each sentence. As the teacher, I can
track how well the students do on these assignments through the IXL website. This
allows me to see if the student is understanding the concepts or if they are still struggling.

Closure (10 Minutes): After all the stations are completed, all of the students will sit back
down in their normal seats. I will tell them to take out their Ipads if they have not had
them out already, and I will pull up a Kahoot code on the Smart Board for them to play.
This is just for a fun closing activity that will get the students more excited to review
what they had just learned during the stations. The top three winners will get a free
homework pass.

Rationale:
1. IXL Grammar
This is a piece of multimedia because it is a website. This website supports student learning and
standards because it allows students to review and practice what we learned in my lessons
(punctuation and capitalization). I know IXL is of high-quality because I used IXL all throughout
my elementary school, middle school, and high school. This app is very beneficial for students
and student learning, and it is very easy to manage and access. To make it more fun for the
students, you can also win prizes, ribbons, and medals for completing a certain number of
activities. Regarding the LORI rubric, some things this app includes from there that stood out to
me were A.4 Evaluating Errors and A. 6 Level of Material. IXL gives students feedback after
getting a question wrong a certain number of times. IXL also uses A.6 because it has different
grade levels and its materials separated so no student gets confused on where they need to locate
an assignment. Now going against the LORI rubric, I would give this website a 3 on visuals. This
is because the color scheme for this website consists of green and white and there is not much
else going on. This website differentiates instruction for all viewers because it presents questions
differently based on how you are doing on previous questions.

2. YouTube Video: Punctuation Explained (By Punctuation!)

This is a piece of multimedia because it is a video. This video supports student learning and
standards because it is a video explaining the different types of punctuation and when to use it.
This type of media does not really use many of the LORI principles mostly because it is a short
video. It is not entirely visually pleasing and does not have any type of differentiation for
different student learning because it is just a short educational video. One factor of the rubric I
did find, although not entirely visually pleasing, it is a very organized video which goes off B.3
Screen Design.
3. Kahoot
This is multimedia because it is an app and website. Students can download the app or just use
the website. This app allows students to take a teacher made quiz in a fun way. This app is
visually pleasing, includes fun music, a leaderboard, and reveals the correct answers after each
question. This is a very great example of multimedia that most teachers should be incorporating
into their classes of any grade and age.
