Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Counting Integers


Objectives:
Students will be able to add and subtract integers
Students will be able to multiply and divide integers
Students will be able to solve on step equations and problem-solving equations

State Standards:
6.NS.5 Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to
describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature
above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits,
positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent
quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.

Context:
It is a South Carolina State standard to teach integers. Integers are whole numbers
anywhere from zero to positive or negative infinity. This lesson is being taught so
that students can be familiarized with addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division of integers. Prior to this lesson students have knowledge and experience
with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of natural numbers. After
this lesson students should know the properties of arithmetic, read number lines,
and order of operations. Students will be able to explore the laws these operations
use and use mathematical models to figure out problems that will commonly are
used.

Data:
Students will be grouped based on their introduction to integers homework
assignment. This will allow me to group the students and give extra help to the
students who struggled with the homework assignment. Data will be collected in
this lesson based on the performance through the closing activity about integers.

Materials:
The materials that will be used for this lesson are pencils, whiteboards, expo
markers, worksheets, iPads, projector,

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes): I will start class by introducing what we will be
learning about and the activities we will be doing. I will talk about integers and
what they are so that the students can become familiarized with them. I made a few
slides on PowerPoint to show my students so that they can visualize it. I will then
explain to them the plan for today about how and what we will be doing in each
rotation. When it is time for the groups to rotate, I will get the classes attention and
tell them to clean their stations and direct each group to the next station.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): In this group I will have students first
watch a short YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04pURxo-iu0 ) video
on integers just to get their brains warmed up answers questions about integers so
that they can get familiar with them. After that I will make a game out of questions
about integers. They will each get a white board with an expo marker and they will
write their answers on there. Whoever gets the most questions right will get a piece
of candy at the end of the game!
Collaborative (15 minutes): In this group students will be given a
worksheet and they will work on it together so that they can solve the equations
together! Then once they figure out all the answers to the worksheet, I will then
have them create a card game with all the numbers they found from the worksheet.
They can then play cards until time is up!

Independent Digital (15 minutes): In this group students will be given an


iPad and they will choose from two different games called Orbit Integers
(https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_OrbitIntegers.html) or Spider Match
(https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_SpiderMatchIntegers.html). Orbit
Integers is game that gives you an equation and you try to answer the question as
fast as you can so that your orbit can move faster. And the faster you move the
more likely you are to finish first. So, this game will allow students to be able to
add, subtract, multiply, or divide faster. The Spider Match game gives you a
number in the middle of the web and then around the number are a bunch of
random numbers that you need to choose to add up to the number in the middle.
This game allows students to be able to think of different numbers that could all
equal one number. At the end of each game I want them to screen shot their scores
and I will come over and look at their progress from the first time they played vs.
the last time they played.

Closure (15 minutes): When I call time, the students will stop what they are
doing and clean up their station. When the groups are done cleaning up I will go
check to make sure everything is properly put away and collect any worksheets or
information I need from the students. The students will then head back to their
desks and pack up everything but keep a pencil on their desk so they can answer
my question I have for them at the end of the class. But before they answer the
question, we will have a class discussion on what we did in class today.
Rationale:
1. I used this YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04pURxo-iu0) as
a part of the multimedia because it is an introduction video on integers. This
video will give the students some background information so that they can
build on top of the basic information. This video supports student learning
and the standards and objectives because it covers all topics that students
will need know and learn in order to move forward in math. This is a high-
quality video because it is a made on a nice, well laid out PowerPoint. It is
very clear and easy to read, and it also covers everything that students will
need to know. This video differentiates instruction for all students by
explaining things in multiple ways and gives a variety of different examples.
2. I used these two math games: Orbit Integers
(https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_OrbitIntegers.html) and Spider
Match (https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_SpiderMatchIntegers.html)
because they educational games but they are fun for the students. They will
keep them interested in what they are doing! This supports student learning
and standards and objectives because it makes you think about adding,
subtracting, multiplying, or dividing numbers. This will get the students to
become very fluent in integers. These games are of high quality because they
cover all the things we have / will cover in class. The games are very easy to
understand so students won’t be confused. These games differentiate in
instructions because you can use choose any numbers that pop into your
head first. When adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing numbers you
can choose many different ways and numbers as to how you get to that exact
answer.
