Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Area and Perimeter Time!
Objectives:
Students will be able to calculate area and perimeter of any shape.
Students will be able to analyze the relationship between the perimeter and area.
State Standards:
4.MDA.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles.

Context:
This lesson is a fourth-grade Mathematic lesson about measurement. I am teaching this lesson
because it is important for students to learn how to measure perimeter and area for any shape. It
is important because students will be able to utilize this skill outside of the classroom in many
places. Before this lesson, the students learned about the different type of shapes. The students
are now able to identify any polygon shape. With this knowledge of identifying shapes, it will
further the ability for students to calculate the perimeter and area based on the number sides of
the polygon. After this lesson, students should be able to find missing angles or sides based on
the given information on the shape. In order to prepare students for this, I will provide the basic
understanding on how to find the missing angles and sides with some practice problems. Overall,
this lesson will help students find area and perimeter in future real-world situations.
Data:
Students will be grouped based on the previous quiz taken in the previous class. The groups will
be divided into three groups, which is based on their results of the quiz: high, middle, and low
grade. The quiz was based on “Identifying the Different Shapes.” Therefore, with the results of
the quiz, I can see what my students understand fully or not at all. At the end of class, students
will be given an exit slip. Students will be given a few practice questions based on the lesson.
With the results of this exit slip, the data will help for future teaching and lesson groups.
Materials:
 iPads
 Worksheets
 Pencils / Markers
 “Spaghetti and Meatballs for All!” Book
 Calculators
 Smartboard
 White boards
Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
Students will come inside the classroom and get settled in. Put their backpacks away and take out
their math notebook, pencil, and to grab a calculator from the bin. After students are settled, they
will wait patiently and talk with their students until 7:45 a.m. To start off the lesson, I will do a
quick review of the previous lesson about identifying the different shapes. If students do not have
any questions, then I will move on for the day’s lesson: Perimeter and Area. The students will
take out their notebooks and pencils to take notes. I will play a YouTube video about finding the
area and perimeter. They will take notes, while watching the video. After the video, I will go
over what the video mentioned, which is the formulas on how to find the area and perimeter. I
will, also, provide all the formulas they need to find the area and perimeter for simple polygon
shapes. After going over the lesson, I will present a list of students divided into three groups. I
will go over the go through each station that each group will go through. I will guide them where
each station will be set in the classroom. Before the break off into groups, I will provide the
materials in each section, so they do not have to wander around the classroom to find the
materials. If there are no questions, then I will let them go into their groups. Once they are
settled, I will start the timer for 15 minutes, and then let them know when it was time to switch to
the next station.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

At the teacher directed station, I want to make sure that all the students have a full understanding
on how to find the area and perimeter. At each seating at my table, it will have a whiteboard and
marker for them to use. While I am reading the book, “Spaghetti and Meatballs for All” by
Marilyn Burns, the students will follow along the problems within the book and draw a diagram
on the whiteboard. Then, I will assist the students on how to find the area and perimeter based
off the book’s given information. After going over all the problems within the book, and if we
have time left, I will provide some problem examples for the students to calculate. Then, answer
any questions they will have.
Collaborative (15 minutes):
In this section, students will pair up into pairs. They will grab their iPads and to use the app,
Geoboard. Students will need their own piece of paper and pencil. One student from the pair will
make a shape in one color of their choice. The other student will the perimeter and area for that
shape. The students will do this three time in total. The students need to make sure all three
shapes are on the screen. Once they finish finding the area and perimeter, they will take
screenshot of the screen and take a picture of their work. They will both turn these pictures into
the assignment on the Google Classroom page.
Independent Digital (15 minutes):
In this section, the students will use their iPads or go on the computer provided in the classroom
and to use their own headphones or use the headphones that are provided in the classroom. The
students will click on the assignment on the Google Classroom page, which takes the students to
the Khan Academy website. In this station, the students will follow along in all three learning
videos. The students will write their notes in their notebooks. These three videos are practice
problems on finding area and perimeter. So, the students can listen to a different point of view on
the same content, while, also, having more practice. The students will then take a picture of their
work and submit it to the assignment on the class page.

Closure (10 minutes):

After all groups have gone through all the stations, the students will quickly and quietly go back
to their seats. I will ask the students if they have any questions. After answering the questions, I
will then give them a slip that has three questions. I will ask them their favorite station, what
helped you learn best, and which content do you need help on. These questions will help for
future teaching and blended learning group stations. While the students are answering their
questions, I will pass out the quiz they took based on the “Identifying the Different Shapes.”
Also, I will pass out the homework assignment based on what they learn and will be due
tomorrow.

Rationale:
“How to Find Area and Perimeter”
This lesson tool is a YouTube video. This multimedia supports my student
learning objectives by providing the calculations of an area and perimeter of a shape. This also
supports my standard because it provides the formula for a rectangle in the video. This source
has a high quality because it has over 1,000,000 views. This video is also friendly channel
Flocabulary. This channel has successfully helped other educators on helping their students learn
specific lessons for and, also, making catchy songs based on the topic. For all learners, this
multimedia motivates the students to learn because of the music and lyrics they use. The music is
very catchy, which gets the students to learn the concept of the video. This helps them on further
assignments in quizzes or tests.

Geoboard
This lesson is an interactive app on the iPad or phone. This supports the student
learning and standards by helping the students have more practice and develop the ability to
calculate any area or perimeter for a simple polygon shape. This is high quality because it has a 4
out of 5 star rating. I chose this app because after interacting with out, I had a fun time making
my own shape. Therefore, the students would have a fun time making the shapes, while also,
learning how to identify a shape and calculate the area and perimeter. For all learners, this help
students have a hands-on experience and have a visual representation on the shapes. The hands-
on experience is when they are making the shapes, and the visual representation is when the
students are observing the fellow classmate construct their shape.

Khan Academy
This lesson is on a website. This website provides videos of other educators, as
well. Therefore, the students will be able to hear a different point of view of the content. This
tool supports the learning objectives and standards because it provides practice examples on how
to find area and perimeter. The presentation design in the videos that the students watch are very
helpful for the students. While the speaker in the video are going through the problem, students
can see what the narrator is writing. The narrator, also, color codes his work so it is easy for the
students to follow. This, also, help students that visual learns. This whole lesson helps all
students through visual and auditory representations. They watch the steps on how to find the
answer, while, also, listening to the steps.
