Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Addition Mathematician

Objectives:
Students will be able to add single digit numbers.
Students will be able to quickly work with their groups to use objects that symbolize addition
problems.
State Standards:
K.ATO.2 Solve real-world/story problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to 10 and
differences within 10.

K.ATO.3 Compose and decompose numbers up to 10 using objects, drawings, and equations.

Context:
I will be teaching this lesson to help kids learn simple addition. Learning simple addition
will help with subtraction, multiplication, and division in later years to come. Addition is
used in everyday life to count money and read number correctly. This is the basis of
everyday knowledge. Learning simple addition will help the kids learn simple subtraction
in the next unit, then finding the missing number in equations.
Data:
Students will be grouped high, medium, then low. I am taking pretest from the beginning
of the week and grouping them based off the results of doing great or poorly on the test.
This will help me more when it comes to the independent group so I will know how much I
need to elaborate on certain areas for students.
Materials:
English book, pencil, iPad, 2 work sheets given by teacher

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
This is the first class after recces. To calm the students down I will assign them to grab a
notebook and a pencil to bring to the carpet with them. I have made a power point with fun songs
imbedded. This PowerPoint will lay out the basic steps to simple addition. I will teach them
methods to easily figure it out. Students will write down simple equations and practice before
beginning with stations.
Teacher Directed (8 minutes):
I pull the students to a round table to give examples of real-life situations so they can use them to
solve the work sheet problems. I have different work sheets set out for each group.
Collaborative (8 minutes):
Students will be working together to put blocked, sticks, and Q-Tips together. There will be a
worksheet for the kids to fill out with this activity. All the objects will be in different colors and
they will need to group them, record how many of them are the same color, and then add them
together. (ex. 8 green blocks plus 2 blue blocks equal 10 purple blocks.
Independent Digital (8 minutes):
Students will play with the app First Numbers- Simple Math for Kids
This app will allow them to count objects up to 10, as well as go into game mode and they will
be able to play a game that will see how many problems can be solved in 60 seconds they will
also watch a BrainPOP video I have assigned for them already pulled up on their browsers.
Closure (10 minutes):
Students will come back to the carpet and play Kahoot. I will have 6 questions prepared for them
to answer on their iPads. Students will be answering these alone and they will have 15 seconds to
answer each question correctly. After the Kahoot game they will have an exit slip so they can
review which station was easiest and the one that was most enjoyable.
Rationale:
BrainPop Video- This is a cartoon video with a young boy and his robot. They have
lessons for all subjects, so they are reoccurring characters in each lesson. They will show
examples of how to do simple addition and they also have a real-life situation they need
to figure out together that is addressed in the beginning of the video. This will help with
the visual learners and help the kids feel like it’s more of an activity than education.

First Numbers- Simple Math for Kids- this app will help the kids that need to be hands on
and competitive. This turns education into an activity that is enjoyable with kids who like
competition. This supports the standards by teaching the kids numbers 1-10 and offer
addition games.
