Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Functions! Functions!
Objectives:
Students will be able to understand the relationship between a function, the graph, and the table.
Students will be able to understand all the types of function relationships.
State Standards:
8.F.1 Explore the concept of functions

a) Understand that a function assigns to each input exactly one output.

b) Relate inputs (𝑥-values or domain) and outputs (𝑦-values or range) to independent and
dependent variables.
c) Translate among the multiple representations of a function, including mappings, tables,
graphs, equations, and verbal descriptions.
d) Determine if a relation is a function using multiple representations, including mappings,
tables, graphs, equations, and verbal descriptions.
e) Graph a function from a table of values. Understand that the graph and table both
represent a set of ordered pairs of that function.

Context:
I am teaching this lesson because functions are the foundation for all mathematics classes going
forward. Students need to understand functions before moving on to Algebra. Students may
bring prior knowledge of what a variable is and what terms are in an expression. The lesson that
comes after this one is comparing functions to another. Therefore students need to learn how to
analyze one function by itself before attempting to compare its data to another.
Data: Students will be grouped into 3 groups of 4 or 5 students in each group. The groupings
will be based on data from a preassessment they took before starting this unit. The three groups
will be the students who scored high, then those who scored in the middle range, and the lower
range scores. Data from this lesson will be collected through an exit ticket quiz via Google
Forms.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
As students begin to arrive at the class, they will be instructed to have only three things on their
table tops, their tablet, a pencil/marker, and headphones/earbuds (optional). When the class is
filed in and settled I will begin to start class. I will greet the students and briefly overview
functions over a PowerPoint. The class will follow along with the notes in their notebooks and
ask questions. At the end of the brief review, I will then put the groupings on the board and
assign each group to their designated station. I will give quick instructions on what the task is at
every station and then release students to start working.
Teacher Directed (20 minutes):
In this portion of the lesson, I will be leading students in front of the class using the
SMART Board. I will tell the students we will be playing board games using the whiteboard. I
will assure students that I am there to help with answering the questions they get and help them
to understand any problems they might be struggling with.
Collaborative (20 minutes):
In this section, the group of students will create a function of their choosing and create a table
filling in the x and y values then plotting the points they get unto a graph. They will do this on a
Poster Sticky Note paper. Students can use either marker or pencil to write down their function
and its graph and table. If students are having trouble creating a function they may use the
YouTube link to the quick 5-minute video as a refresher on how to understand the types of
function relationships.
Independent Digital (20 minutes):
During the Independent Digital, students will sit at a desk and pull out their tablet/laptop.
Students can either use the IXL app or access the website through the Internet. Students will take
this time to practice and learn more about functions. Students can take notes while completing
work on IXL. Their progress is recorded so there will be nothing for them to be directly turned in
to me.
Closure (10 minutes):
I will instruct students to clean up at their stations and head back to their seats. I will ask
students for quick feedback about how they feel about the lesson. I will also ask for feedback on
how they liked working in the stations. I will then tell students to complete the Google form
before leaving the classroom as this will count as an exit ticket.
Rationale:
IXL:
This multimedia piece is a website and app that helps students practice numerous skills
and keeps track of their data/progress. IXL is a great learning tool for students to get
extra practice or help. IXL’s content is based on specific learning standards as well.
According to LORI criteria, this app/website scores 3 and 4. It’s a great resource and
caters to different learners. It’s a great learning tool or studying tool for students from
Pre-K to 12th grade.
YouTube Video:
This multimedia piece is a video that gives a quick lesson on the relationship types of
functions. The video features mapping diagrams, tables, and graphs. She uses multiple
examples and visuals to help with explaining the concepts. This supports the SC Standard
8.F.1 and it helps set the foundation for the lessons to follow this one. Using the LORI
criteria this multimedia piece scores in the 3s. The video helps cater to all learners and
includes captions. The video also includes multiple examples and explanations for each
type of function relationship.
