Unit 5 Mastery
Title: Slinky Form
Objectives: Students will be able to read and write numbers along with know how to write them
in expanded form.
SC Teaching Standard: Read, write and represent numbers through 999 using concrete models,
Context: This is a second-grade lesson plan which will help the students understand how to read,
write, and represent all numbers through 999 including their expanded form. Students must
understand how numbers are written in order to read them and to help saying numbers out loud.
They should know how to write numbers in words and with symbols to be successful throughout
their careers. Students must also know the expanded form of numbers for a better understanding
of numbers and how to add and subtract them. Previously students could read, write, and
represent numbers through 99 and their expanded form. Once students have an understanding of
how to represent their numbers and write them out in expanded form, then they can compare the
sizes of numbers. This lesson is essential for the students to better understand numbers and what
they mean.
Data: For this lesson students will be divided into three groups. Each group will have a mix of
students ranging from high understanding to low understanding. Students will be divided this
way so that they can help one another have a better understanding and to work on their
teamwork. Data will be collected from the students’ homework assignment and am exit ticket. At
the end of the lesson there will be a homework assignment on the topics covered in this lesson
along with an exit ticket reflecting on their experience in their grouping. The exit ticket will also

Procedures:
Introduction (15 minutes)- After we finish up with English work, I will tell the children to put
away their English materials and take out their math notebook and a pencil letting them know it
is now time for math. I will write a number on the board and see if anyone can read me the
number out loud. I will then read the number out loud and ask the students how we know this
answer is correct. I will then show them the ones place, the tens place, and the hundreds place.
Next, I will play a YouTube video explaining in more detail place values and expanded form. I
will then explain each station and break the students into their groups and assign which station
click on the second option called understanding Place Value. These instructions will also be said
in the introduction part of this lesson and be printed out for the students to follow. In the game
they will be asked in different ways which number has a certain number in a certain place value
or to create a number based on different place values. Students will take a screenshot that they
have completed the activity. If they complete the activity with time to spare, they can do the
Collaborative Station (20 minutes)- In this station I will set up scissors, glue, and have a
worksheet for each group. Students will look through the magazines together to find numbers
with a certain number in a certain place value based on what the worksheet says. Each child
could do a certain number on the worksheet or they can all look through the magazines together.
The students can decide as a group how they want to collaborate. Once they find the number that
matches the criteria on the worksheet, they must cut it out of the magazine and glue it on to the
worksheet. These directions will be said during the introduction and will be printed out for the
students to follow. If they finish with extra time, students can come up with their own criteria
and find the answer in the magazine. For example, on the back of their group worksheet they can
Teacher Led Station (20 minutes)- For this station I will be running the activities. I will first ask
if anyone as any question with what we have gone over so far in the instructions or in any other
activities. If there are any questions, I will answer them. Next, I will tell the students to log on to
their laptops/iPads and go to https://kahoot.it/ and put in the game code. I will explain to the
students how Kahoot works and I will have the questions and answer options on my iPad. I will

ask questions like what is 453 in expanded form and which number has a 6 in the tens place.
Once the students finish the Kahoot and if there is more time left, I will ask each student to come
up with their own question for the other students in their group to answer.
Closure (15 minutes)- Once everyone has gone through all the stations, I will ask the students to
sit down with their group. I will ask everyone how their experience went and if anyone wants to
share about what they experienced in their group or in each activity. Next, I will ask if anyone
made up a sample question, they would like to ask the class by writing it on the smartboard.
Lastly, I will hand out the exit ticket with questions about the topics covered in this lesson, a
question about a topic that is going to be covered in the future, and a question about how the
