Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Odd or Even? Let’s find out!


Objectives: Students will be able to identify numbers up to 20 as odd or even. They will use
multiple methods to find this such as pairing numbers up to share their relation. At the end
of the lesson, students will be able to know fluently how to add and subtract all the way to
20.
State Standards: (2nd Grade)
-2.ATO.2: Demonstrate fluency with addition and related subtraction facts through 20.
-2.ATO.3: Determine whether a number through 20 is odd or even using pairing of objects,
counting by twos, or finding two equal addended to represent the number (e.g., 3+3=6).

Context: This lesson will be taught after students have shown they’re fluent with using
addition and subtraction to find sums all the through 20. The larger part of this unit would
be about using addition and subtraction to help find sums. This lesson is very important to
have students master because they will be able to use their prior knowledge of addition and
subtraction, to help them solve whether a number up to 20 is odd or even. They will also
help students prepare to learn how to identify odd and even numbers in a much larger
concept. While the focus of this lesson will be using addition to help find even numbers, the
counting by two method is one that they should also master cause it will the most beneficial
in the next lesson. After students have mastered numbers to 20, students will then begin
learning how to identify evens and odds throughout the whole number system.
Data: Students will be grouped by the previous lesson from the prior class where they
learned how to be fluent with addition and subtraction to 20. This data for grouping will
come from the exit ticket from the day before. Since the exit ticket was 3 questions, I will
put into an excel sheet, for each student, the number of questions they answered correctly.
If a student answered 3 right, they’d be put into the highest group, 2 right will be put into
needing some work, and 1 right will be put into the much improvement group. After our
lesson is completed, in teaching odds and evens, students will use Kahoot to test their
knowledge. I will then review what questions students answered correctly and go from
there in regrouping them for the next day.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes): Students will come into class and soon get out their supplies for the
day. As we transition into their learning assignment for the day, I will be standing at the front of
class. On the smartboard I will have the addition/subtraction problems from the day before and
ask the students if they can help me solve them. After students have helped me with the review
of our exit ticket from the day before, I will introduce to students what an odd and even number
is, and how they can identify them in their learning. This introduction to odd and even numbers
will be presented through a YouTube video on my smartboard. This video helps to demonstrate
the grouping method and counting by two methods.

Teacher Directed (10 minutes): After we have watched our introduction to understand what an
odd and even number is, I will then explain the different methods that students use in finding
these. We will first start with the worksheet that demonstrates using a number line to skip count
by two. Since this number line goes past 20, I would have students only complete the first two
number lines. The number worksheet would also be on the smartboard so students could come
fill them in as I call on them to. Once they have filled in the number line, I will then call on a
student to tell me if they could explain what we just did. After this explanation, I will explain to
students that every even number is counted by two’s, (2,4,6,8,10…). Once I state this I will then
tell students that every other number (1,3,5,7,9…) is odd. Students will have a chance to ask
questions, but I will quickly group them into their groups, based on the data from the previous
lesson. In their groups they will watch videos about using addition to help find even numbers.

Collaborative (10 minutes): After students have been grouped into their levels of understanding
from the pervious lesson, I will ask them to grab their IPad’s for the lesson. They will go into our
“Google Classroom” and find the linked videos I have for them. While students are watching the
videos that show how to use addition to find even numbers, I will be passing out worksheets that
help them use the equal addends. They will complete these together and we will go over the
worksheet as a class in the last few minutes of their group work.
Independent Digital (10 minutes): After students have completed their group work, I will ask
them to start working on their graded classwork. At this point in our lesson, students should feel
confident with ways they can show if a number is odd or even. This individual digital time will
come from them using their IPad’s to answer questions on our Quizlet classroom site. Once
students have completed the practice problems, they will remain seated at their desk and wait for
instructions.

Closure (10 minutes): Once students have completed their required collaborative and
independent work for the day, I will focus them back to my attention. I will ask them to engage
questions to gauge whether they feel comfortable with the lesson. Once we have finished our
questions, I will provide students with the Kahoot game link to help put their knowledge of even
numbers to the test. These questions will include being able to identify even numbers, using the
counting by two method, and finally using equal addends to help find even numbers. After our
Kahoot is over, I will take students to their specials and then come back to regroup them based
off the data from the Kahoot Game. This will be put into my excel sheet and hopefully there is
growth in students from the lesson prior.

Quizlet: Using an app like “Quizlet” is very beneficial for the learning process of students.
This app allows students to navigate through their own education and reflect on what they
have learned. In this case, students will be assigned questions through our classroom
option, where I will then be able to monitor what they have done to make sure they have
completed the problems. This website does a nice job of giving students the opportunity to
become efficient with technology on their own time because of how user-friendly it is. It
also allows teachers to easily see what their students can improve on.
YouTube Video for Introduction (“Even and Odd Numbers- Math for Kids”): I chose this
piece of multimedia because students tend to gravitate towards information that is
interactive and interesting to them. Since this video is almost cartoon-like I assumed that
students would be engaged and want to pay attention to the video. This video does a nice
job of teaching students the basic knowledge of what an even and odd number looks like.
Students who may not have much of an attention span will do well with this video because
of short and detailed the video is. Overall, this video does a very nice job of showing
students the basics needed for the lesson, while positively incorporating technology into
education.
YouTube Video for Collaborative Work: Students will use this multimedia tool to learn
about the different equal addends they can use to find even numbers in the number system,
in this case only to 20. This video does a nice job of giving students the opportunity to grasp
the content with numerous on-screen examples. I really like the use of videos for class
instructions because of how much students can learn from it. They are free of use so there
is no finance issues for students.
Google Classroom: The use of “Google Classroom” is both beneficial to teachers and
students. Students can easily find all of their class materials on this website fast and
efficiently. For students who have a hard time with just being taught auditory, they are
able to visually see what the teacher wants from them. In this case, I will be providing links
for videos that students will watch for their collaborative work. With using google
classroom, students are given the opportunity to use a interesting website for their own
learning.
Kahoot: Overall, “Kahoot” is a very interesting and nice app for both teachers and
students. From being free of cost, to lots of laughs being shared with peers, “Kahoot” is a
multimedia app that allows students to both have fun and learn at the same time. Teachers
use this tool to help evaluate their students’ knowledge. This is very beneficial app for both
teachers and students.
