Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Learning how to apply laws of exponents

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Apply the laws of exponents using product rule, quotient rules, power to a power, and product to
a power, quotient to a power, zero power property, and negative exponents)
State Standards:
8.EEI.1 Understand and apply the laws of exponents (i.e., product rule, quotient rule, power to a
power, product to a power, quotient to a power, zero power property, negative exponents) to
simplify numerical expressions that include integer exponents.
Context: In this lesson, I will go over the laws of exponents. The students will understand what
the each of the rules are. In the lesson before this one the students will learn how to apply
functions to real life and look at them on a graph. This lesson will prepare students to know how
to apply these rules to simplify functions for future topics.
Data: Students will be grouped in fours. They will be grouped by their previously done exit
ticket from the pre-existing info that they already know from there other grade levels. The data
for the future will be collected by a kahoot at the end of the lesson seeing if they learned
anything from the first practice.
Materials: During the introduction the students will not need any materials, for the teacher
directed portion they will need their tablet for taking notes and their apple pencil and they will
use the notes app. For their collaborative station students use white boards and dry erase
markers. They will need to be able to access khan academy for the independent digital part of our
lesson; https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-eighth-grade-math/cc-8th-numbers-
operations/cc-8th-exponent-properties/a/exponent-properties-review . For our closure lesson
students will be tested on what they know on Kahoot with the use of their iPad.
Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):
This will be a short introduction just to remind them of what they have learned in
previous classes that is not this one. I will ask them what they already know about laws of
exponents. I will ask them to raise their hands and give me specific laws that they might already
know. Students will be able to during this time and write the different laws of what they know.
Teacher Directed (20 minutes):
During this time we will go over what each of the laws are, students will be asked to take
notes on their IPad that they are given by the school, this will make them accessible notes for
when they go home to do the homework, they will simply use the note app which is already built
into their iPad. They will listen to each one of the laws that I tell them about and we will also go
over examples so they know how to do all of them. I will ask students to come up to the board to
answer specific questions I write down and they will be able to explain their work to the class.
Collaborative (10 minutes):
During the collaborative section we are going to play a game using white boards and dry
erase markers. There will be 4 groups of 4 split up and each team is going to have to answer
questions that I write down on the board. Whichever group gets the question correct first will get
candy. All groups will each get one white board and one marker. Students will trade off the
white board to each other for each question to see if each student knows how to use the laws of
exponents. Group members will be able to collaborate to help each other understand how to use
the law of exponents better
Independent Digital (10 minutes):
For the independent digital part of our lesson students will use Khan Academy to review what
they know. I will have the student break off independently and ask them to take out their IPads in
order to use the Review portion of this exponent practice in Khan Academy
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-eighth-grade-math/cc-8th-numbers-operations/cc-8th-
exponent-properties/a/exponent-properties-review . We then will come back together after they
do all the practice problems in the review section to see how well they did.
Closure (5 minutes):
In the closure portion of our lesson we will play a short 3 question Kahoot game
https://kahoot.com/ to see if they fully understand law of exponents or if they need to spend
more time on it. Students will be asked to take out their iPad and enter the game code. After each
question we will see how many students got it wrong and I will make note of this to decide if we
need to spend more time on it. Students will also be asked to explain after each question why it is
the correct answer and I will take volunteers for this.
Rationale:

I used this piece of multimedia because if students need to go back at a later time or if
they don’t understand what was taught in the lesson once they go home they will be able
to look back at this section to see if they can get more examples and Khan academy will
explain how to do the problems. This supports the standards and objectives of this lesson
because they explain exactly what they are learning. I know this is high quality because
Khan Academy is used for everything and can be used for any subject. It is also a
scholarly website that I have used before. This can be used for all learner because it
explains what everything means. The students can click on different help buttons to
explain why they got things wrong and they can have it explained to them.
(Kahoot.): https://kahoot.com/
I used this multimedia because I can change it depending on what I want the students to
learn. I am able to pick exactly what the quiz questions are so I know that it is perfect for
my standards and objectives for this lesson. It is of high quality because I the teacher is
giving the information for the student to learn from. It is a good tool for teachers to be
able to customize for students to learn from. I am able to change it depending on what I
need to accommodate all my learners based on how they learn. Making it easier for me to
assist all my students
