Lesson Title:
Punctuation like a Comma or Ellipse Avoid Sentence Details Being Skipped!

Objectives:
Students will be able to understand the purpose and definition of commas ellipses and dashes.
Students will be able to apply how the purpose of these three punctuations properly fit when
being incorporated into any sentence.
State Standards:
Standard 5: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard
English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
5.2 Use:
a. commas, ellipses, and dashes to indicate a pause, break, or
omission; and
b. an ellipse to indicate an omission.

Context: I am teaching this lesson because, it builds off a previous lesson which was taught on
punctuation. However, this lesson is slightly more detailed as it covers some pieces of
punctuation not covered before. Examples of those would mostly include the proper usage of
ellipses. As the previous lesson leading to this one cover basic punctuation leading into other
pieces of punctuation, which is more complex, it also leads up to this current lesson’s particular
purpose which is being able to see how sentences receive a different impact in their structure as
opposed to just the basic punctuation such as a comma or period. As mentioned, the key to what
makes this lesson more complex than the previous one is specifically how omission in a sentence
can properly be determined from the punctuation of an ellipse. As I mentioned that this lesson
builds off basic punctuation such as commas and periods, it is crucial that students apply these
into this lesson as the students’ understanding of writing a proper sentence should include both
the easier and more complex parts of punctuation. Sometime soon after this lesson, students will
have to write an essay narrative on any topic of their choice. However, the key purpose of this
assignment is that students can properly incorporate in their writing what they have been taught
about punctuation. Along with this, there will also be a lesson soon which focuses on writing
essays based off novels in which the class has read. It will also be crucial that students
understand both basic and more complex punctuation as well as the sentence structure impact
for this assignment. This is because, for these essays, students will be asked to write about how
they notice examples of punctuation we have learned being incorporated into the stories the
class has read.
Data: Students will be put into groups based off their understanding of the previous lesson.
Specifically, in the previous lesson students were given an exit ticket at the closure of class
where they had to identify the basic parts of punctuation. Specifically, the exit ticket consisted of
students writing their own sample sentence and, in that sentence, and in that sentence, properly
including the basic punctuation properly in their sentence or two which they wrote. In the
current lesson, it will contain of three stations which students will have to rotate through. One of
the stations consists of a review of the concepts for basic punctuation which was covered in the
previous lesson. Students who did poorly on the previous lesson will start with the review station
of the last station as this is an indicator that they still need help understanding the previous
lesson. Students who did successful on the previous lesson’s exit will instead start off with one of
the other two stations which relate to the current lesson’s concepts of more complex punctuation
which deals with what I have already mentioned about how an ellipse can cause omission in a
sentence. More specifics to each of this lesson’s stations will be outlined below in the list of
materials and the procedures.
Materials:
-Pencil and Paper (Students will need this for any notes they want to take during any of the
lesson’s stations as well as the exit ticket they will be expected to write on loose leaf paper
during the closure of the lesson).
-Device which the student may have including a laptop and either a phoner or tablet. Students
need a device in order to reference the app and other multi-media source which is part of the
three stations students rotate through in the lesson.
- App available in Google Play Store named “English Guess the Phrase”. This is the app
students need to reference in one of their three stations. The Link for the app:

-Students will need to be able to access Khan Academy. This is because, this is where the multi-
media source is that students will need to reference for one of the three stations. Specifically,
this multi-media source is a video on the concept of using ellipses in a sentence. Link to the

- The teacher will need to reference the PowerPoint from the previous lesson for one of the three
stations of this current lesson. The posted PowerPoint which is right beneath this part of the material list
is the direct link to the previous lesson. This will be referenced during the the station where students
review the material from last class. It is highly recommended that students take notes on this material,
so they don’t continue to forget anything the did from when the lesson was initially taught.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
The lesson will start off by the teacher explaining to the students that this current lesson is
focused on the overall concept of how ellipses in a sentence can cause an omission in a sentence
in relation to punctuation. The teacher will then explain that the class will be divided into three
groups and each group will rotate through three stations which correspond with the lesson. The
teacher will explain what will be done in each station as outlined in the “Teacher Directed”,
“Collaborative”, and “Independent Digital” Sections. The teacher will explain that the group of
students who struggled the most with previous class material will start in the station which is
concerned with reviewing the previous class PowerPoint.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
This will be one of the groups of the station where the Teacher presents to the current
group of students the PowerPoint from the previous class. This will be the students’ opportunity
to take any additional notes which they have taken before on the previous class material. The
instructor will also ask the students to think of any examples they can create of the previous
lesson to confirm they received out of reviewing the previous lesson PowerPoint. It is also
recommended that students take notes on what they come up with.

Collaborative (10 minutes):


Each group of students when they rotate to the particular station will watch the five-minute
video on Khan Academy which demonstrates the overall key ideas to take away of how ellipses
can properly be structured in sentences. Once the video is over, students have one two options.
They can then spend the remaining five minutes checking out other resources on Khan Academy
to see what else on the website can help them in relation to the lesson. The other option is they
can spend the remaining five minutes of the station taken handwritten/ bullet-point notes on what

Independent Digital (10 minutes):
Each group of students when they rotate to the particular station will work on an app
through their phone or tablet which is titled, “English Guess the Phrase”. This is an app which
students can very easily download from Google Play store. In this app, it is set up to somewhat
resemble a game of hangman where a sentence or phrase will be given with blanks which
represent parts and letters of missing words which need to be filled into that sentence or phrase.
Students will need to figure out what to fill into any of those empty blanks. This activity is very
relevant to the overall current lesson as an omission can refer to anything which is left out or

Closure (5 minutes):
For the closure, students will reference the same sheet of loose-leaf paper that they took
notes on throughout the lesson. On this paper, students will write two additional sentences to it.
The first sentence will answer the question of how much they think reviewing the previous
lesson’s materials in one of the stations helped them and why. In this sentence, students will a
rating from one to five of how helpful they think this tactic was with five meaning it really helped
them out and one meaning it did not help at all. In the second sentence students write, they will
think about what they learned in the other two stations to then write an example of any sentence
they want where an ellipse and omission is used within that sentence.

Rationale:
(Rationale Paragraph for first multimedia) One of the pieces of multi-media which was used for
this lesson was a video from the Khan Academy Website which focuses on ellipses being
incorporated into a sentence. This is very relevant to the lesson as this can serve as a form of
explanation besides just the teacher on how this concept works. The main reason why this can be
so crucial is because in a lot of cases, it can be very beneficial for students to receive
explanation from two or more different professional which can two different points of view for
the students. Two different points of view can then help strengthen students’ skills on being able
to apply a concept in different ways. More specifically, this can help students better understand
the fact that there can be several different ways to accurately determine given information. The
content quality of this video is very good as it everything presented in the video shows up very
clearly and nothing is blurry. The learning goal alignment is perfect in this video as it focuses on
how to use ellipses in a sentence which is exactly what the lesson is about. For Khan Academy in
general, feedback, adaptation, and motivation is great as practice problems can be generated
from the videos that are watched, feedback of accuracy for question answers are given along
with why they are right or wrong. Adaptation is incorporated with being able to use Khan
academy through any device as well as motivation since Khan academy can provide further
resources and create plans to guide students where really struggle accurately answering
practice problems. Presentation design of the particular video is really good as different colors
are used for different note taken aspects of the concept which can really help students
understand the organized structure of the concept. Interaction usability and reusability is great
as students can spend as long as they want at a time on Khan Academy. Students can also stop
and Khan Academy saves their work from where they last stopped for when they log on the next
time which connects to reusability. As I already mentioned that this Khan Academy video
completely corresponds with the objectives with the concept of using ellipses in sentences, this
also makes this lesson’s standard compliance also completely on track with this Khan Academy

(Rationale Paragraph for second multimedia) As already mentioned, the other piece of
multimedia which I used for this lesson was an app available in Google Play Store which is
titled, “English Guess the Phrase”. As I mentioned earlier in the procedures, this app is
perfectly in relation to this lesson’s standards and objectives as it involves figuring out what is
missing in each sentence or phrase. This is a crucial concept as this had a lot to do with
omission which is concerned with figuring out what is undone or left out or undone in a
sentence. The content quality and learning goal alignment are perfect in this app as I already
mentioned that its concept of omission perfectly relates to the standards and learning objectives
of this lesson. Since all of these factors are perfectly in check with each other, this also makes its
standards compliance completely accurate. Feedback and adaptation are great in this app as
you can access the app from any device and the app also obviously gives feedback on what the
student answers right and wrong. This app does not offer much motivation in the sense that it
does not direct students to additional sources which can help them the way that Khan Academy
does. Presentation design on this app is good as it is set up to resemble learning through fun and
interesting games that are popular such as hangman. Interaction usability and reusability is
great as students can spend as long as they want at a time on Khan Academy. Students can also
