Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Dimensions
Objectives:
Students will be able to draw and classify 2D and 3D shapes.
Students will be able to understand the difference between 2D and 3D
State Standards:
K.G.3 Classify shapes as two-dimensional/flat or three-dimensional/solid and explain the
reasoning used.
K.G.5 Draw two-dimensional shapes (i.e., square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, and circle) and
create models of three-dimensional shapes (i.e., cone, cube, cylinder, and sphere).

Context:
This lesson is intended for a Kindergarten math class and dimensions. I am teaching this because
the students look around every day and see 3 dimensional objects all around, but they will call a
sphere a circle because that is what it looks like to them and they do not know what else to call it.
They will have better knowledge of dimensions and learn new vocabulary. Before this lesson the
students learned about what each 2D and 3D shape is called. That prepared them to classify and
draw down the shapes I give them, so they are familiar with what I am saying. After this lesson,
the students will compare length and width and using terms like shorter/longer, shorter/taller, and
lighter/heavier. I am teaching the students how to classify and draw each shape. This will help
them with the next lesson because they will have to draw shapes and identify the different sizes.
Data:
At the end of the day in the previous class, I will give them an assignment asking them how to
draw each shape they will be learning about. This will give me a better understanding on which
group each student should go in (lower, middle, high). This will put them in groups to better help
them feel more comfortable and to help each other out where they need it.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
The students will come in and put away their things. They will have time to talk and eat their
breakfast and get ready for the day. After they are done, I will go over what we are doing for the
day and ask everyone how their night was and if they did anything fun. I will then explain the
lesson we will be going over and what is needed and expected from them at each station. I will
then show them a Youtube video pasted above and after they will complete a worksheet where
they have to draw what they think is 2D and 3D. They will turn it into the bin, this should take
about 5 minutes because they can work on it during the video. The students will be made aware
how much time they have at each station, so they need to be efficient and focused. I will set a
timer on the board, so they know exactly how much time they have left at each station.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

For this station we will be sitting at our desks and I will be writing on the smart board
what shape I want them to make, and they will try their best to make the shape I tell them to out
of multiple blocks and triangular shapes. We will then all do it together and see who got it right.
This will help me better understand who has a grasp on the concept and knows the difference
between the different shapes. I will then ask each student to make a shape of their choice and I
will go around and see what they chose.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

At this station, the students will be working in pairs. The students will be using iPads and
an app called Shapes for Kids. This app will flash a shape at the student, and they will have to
guess what shape it is and right down their answer on a piece of paper. If they get it right, they
will put a check mark next to it and if they get it wrong, they will write the right answer next to
their answer. Their partner will be making sure they do not cheat. Then they will switch turns.
They will continue doing this until time is up and turn in their paper to the bin.

Independent Digital (15 minutes):

The students will use the iPad and play a game where they will have to sort out and drag
which shape is 2D and which shape is 3D. This will help them classify and become more
familiar with the different dimensions. They will not be turning anything in for this but I will be
monitoring them while then students are creating their blocks at the teacher station.

Closure (20 minutes):

When we are all done our stations, I will have the students turn in anything they need to
turn in and find their seats. We will play a Kahoot game about the different shapes and their
names and use their iPads to play. This will show me which students have a grasp on the concept
and which ones still do not. I will then ask the students to bring in one 2D object and one 3D
object for their homework to bring in next class and present it to the class.

Rationale:
Shapes for Kids Flashcard Game:
I chose this because this will let them continue to learn the differences and become
familiar with the shapes while having to write down each shape on a piece of paper. They
can play this game as many times as they want until the time is up and they can get as
much practice as they need.

Sorting Shapes
This is a website game where they have to put the 2D and 3D in the right place on the
screen and again this is just more practice to get them familiar with what is 2D and 3D.
