Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Constructing Shapes

Objectives:
Students will be able to… Understand and decide between two-dimensional shape’s defining and
non-defining attributes.
Students will be able to… Combine two-dimensional or three-dimensional shapes to create a
composite shape.
State Standards:
1.G.1 Distinguish between a two-dimensional shape’s defining (e.g., number of sides) and non-defining
attributes (e.g., color).

1.G.2 Combine two-dimensional shapes (i.e., square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, rhombus, and
trapezoid) or three-dimensional shapes (i.e., cube, rectangular prism, cone, and cylinder) in more than
one way to form a composite shape.

Context: The reasoning for picking this lesson is mostly just due to my love of math as well as
first grade standards. I also feel that shapes are an important bases to learn. These two state
standards are actually the first two in the geometry standard, so it makes the lesson before this
one, lesson 1.ATO.9. This is in the Algebraic thinking and operations unit which is about
demonstrating addition and subtraction with mostly real-world problems that sums are equal two
or less than 20. The pervious knowledge students will have about this lesson is the general
knowledge of common shapes, colors, and counting the number of sides the shapes have. The
lesson after this one is 1.G.3. This lesson is about dividing two-dimensional shapes into two or
four equal parts. I will be teaching my students how to point out attributes about different two-
dimensional shapes. This lesson also teaching my students creating composite shapes out of two
and three-dimensional shape. This will help my students understand and pick out more shapes as
well as create their own.
Data: Students will be grouped into three groups. These groups will consist of an individual
work, group work, and a teacher help station. This grouping will be based off random shapes
provided from them. They will then take these shapes to analysis them as well as make
composite shapes from them. The group placement will be based out the exit activity we had
from the previous lesson. The data that will be collected will be from an exit activity students
will do at the end of each day to understand how they each are understanding the material.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes): The class will enter the class and put away their items at their
desk. They will then join onto the carpet to talk about the lesson for the day, group placements,
and what will be done in each group. I will start my lesson on constructing two and three-
dimensional shapes into composite shapes as well as describing the shapes’ aspects. I will be first
explaining how to find and point out aspects of shapes. They will find different colors, number of
sides, and shape names from examples I will draw onto the Smart Board. Next, I will talk and
explain about what a composite shape looks like. I will do this by drawing examples onto the
Smart Board. I will lastly explain how to construct composite shapes out of common shapes like
the triangle, square, circle, etc. These will also be shown by examples drawn onto the Smart
Board. With each example, I will ask the class who wants to answer the example. I will then
provide them with their group instruction for each group along with who is starting in which
group first. I will end with asking if there are any question and if so, I will answer or provide
another example to go over. Students will then get up and depart to their groups they were
assigned.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): In this section, this group will be held at a round table
where the students will sit around me. The students will each be provided with a white board, dry
erase marker, and eraser. I will provide them with example shapes that have different numbers of
sides, colors, and shape names. Students will have to write down the color of the shape, number
of sides, and name associated with the shape. After students show their answers, I will explain
and answer each part of the question. After of few examples of that, I will move on to drawing
composite shapes for them. They will answer me by drawing on the white boards each shape that
can be used to create the composite shape provided. After this group had ended, they will then
switch to the next group.

Collaborative (15 minutes): Within this group, students will get onto their iPads to play a
game involving composite shapes. The link to this will be posted on the students google
classroom. This game allows students to work in multiplayer mode. They will compete with each
other to construct a composite shape that are giving to them. You must build these shapes with
the shapes provided with no overlapping or repeating one shape. You earn a point for every
shape you complete before your opponents. The player with the most points after all the rounds
will win. Once group time is up, they will rotate to the next group.

Independent Digital (15 minutes): In this group, student will have two worksheets to
complete. The first worksheet is called Composing and Matching 2D Shapes. In this worksheet,
students will be matching the set of shapes that matches with the ending look composite shape.
After finishing this worksheet, they will then move onto the next worksheet. This one is titled
How Many Triangles worksheet. In this sheet, students will count how many triangles it takes to
fill up each given composite shape. After counting, the student will check the box with the
correct number of triangles used. Once finished with the two worksheets, the students have the
option to free draw on the back of their worksheet or play the turtlediary.com game in single
player mode until they must move to the next group.

Closure (20 minutes): Once time is fully up for small group time, students will all get up
and meet on the carpet. Once all students are seated, I will then go over one or two more
questions for the students to answer. Once the question is answered, I will go over the question. I
will then ask if there are any questions. If there are, I will answer all the questions I can. Once
the questions are done, I will hand them a worksheet to complete and turn into me as our exiting
slip for today’s lesson. This worksheet is named Shapes: Defining Attributes. Once these are
turned in, I will have each student the homework assigned named Match It Up Worksheet. The
exiting worksheet slip will be used to assign groups for the next lesson. Homework will be
announced that it is due next class.
Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
Multimedia 1: https://www.turtlediary.com/game/compose-shapes-using-one-square-
three-triangles.html
This is game website for students to teach them subject based games. This is multimedia
due to it being an educational website. I chose a game off this website for my students to get to
play. It is focused on the topic we are learning of compose shapes. Students can play multiplayer
or alone. In the game, they get a list of basic shapes like triangles circles, etc. and they must
place them into the given compose shape before the other players do. This applies to LORI
because it follows the eight evaluations.
The website game is on course with the lesson being thought. The learning goal of the
game is to get quicker on the ability of constructing compose shapes. For feedback and
adaptation, is they gain a point for every shape they beat others for putting the shapes together
the fastest. Motivation comes from having their lesson in a fun, competitive game form. The
presentation design is grade level friendly. For interaction usability, the website is an interactive
game for young students. Reusability is great due to it being a free game that students can long
into and play whenever they would like. Lastly, for standards compliance, the information that is
needed to be learned is implied in the game. Student will have a great understanding of the class
lesson while playing this game. This game is a very well-rounded gaming website that is very
friendly for students and teachers.

Multimedia 2: https://www.kidsacademy.mobi/printables/how-many-triangles/
This is a piece of multimedia due to it being a website for teachers to use for their class. I
picked a worksheet off this web page that was connected to my lesson for the day. This is high
quality due to it being created for a specific grade level, subject, and standard. This website does
good when put against the LORI criteria.
For the first criteria being content quality, this website goes good in this section because
it is created for a certain grade level, subject, and standard. For learning goal alignment, the
worksheets are very specific with the standard that is being taught as well as is appropriate for
the grade level. The feedback and adaptation are given from the teacher who is looking over the
student’s work. It is motivating by being interesting and appealing for the student grade level.
The presentation design is great for the students because they are created and designed for
individual grade levels. For interaction usability, the worksheets are clear for instructions as well
as not overly intuitive for the students or teachers. For reusability, it is a great website to get
class worksheets from. It is very lesson specific for the students. Lastly, for standards
compliance, the worksheets are displayed great on the website and when printed.
