 What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disability
that affects the student's ability
to verify different sounds or
letters while reading or writing.
It is found in the areas of the
brain that processes languages.

 3 Characteristics of Dyslexia
oThey have a hard time decoding words
- ex: m-ar-ch, sh-ip
oStruggle with having a strong fluency

oHard time comprehending what they have read

 History of Dyslexia
o 1877: Adloph Kussmaul identified the first
characteristics of Dyslexia

o 1896: Percy a 14-year-old boy was the first to

be diagnosed with dyslexia, because of his
inefficiency in fluency and in strengthening
his reading ability.

o 1996: the Maharashtra Dyslexia Association

secures the rights to dyslexia students getting Adolph Kussmaul
the appropriate education they deserve.
Federal Court Case
Case: O.R. v Clark County Schools
•O.R was placed in her school's special
education program for "Physical impairment"
•Her parents had her tested outside of school
through Orton-Gillingham Methodology, and
she was diagnosed with dyslexia and more
•Her school denied changing her 504 plan
- This is against Section 504 and Title ii of Americans
with Disabilities act
•The Plaintiffs issued that the school district
reimburse $456,990.60
Education Laws
•Section 504
-Section 504 prohibits discrimination that is
based upon disability
-A students who attends a school who
receive Federal financial assistance, have
a right for an evaluation
-In their 504 plan a teacher can find the
students accommodations to help them
succeed in the classroom.
•House Bill 3928
-June 10, 2023
-Impacts dyslexia evaluation,
identification and instruction
-Parents have a right to request an
evaluation through special education
if they suspect their child has
dyslexia
Instructional and Support Strategies
• Classroom Materials and Routines
-Posting a visual schedules and reading them aloud
•Introducing New Concepts
-Use visual or audio support to help the student understand written materials in the
lecture
• Completing Test and Assignments
- Provide different ways to respond to test questions, like saying the answers or
circling an answer instead of filling in the blank
