Dickens successfully presents Mr Bumble as a negative character from the start of
this extract by describing him as ‘he gave the little wicket a tremendous shake,
and then bestowed upon it a kick...’ The use of the verbs ‘shake’ and ‘kick’ create
impression of an aggressive and angry person who is perhaps quite impatient
and demanding. Additionally the use of the adjective ‘tremendous’ exaggerates
how forceful he is being, suggesting he likes to abuse his power. This would be
typical of the power imbalance during the 19th century as the poor were often
