Curriculum is the sum total of all learning experiences that is ingeniously and

painstakingly incorporated, considering the identified needs of the industry and the
globe at large. It is the teacher that executes the curriculum activities so the teacher
and the curriculum moves side by side. This implies that one can not discuss
elaborately on curriculum without the mention of the teacher who is the curriculum
implementer. In view of the above explanations, below are the notable things I have
accumulated in the course, “THE TEACHER AND THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM.”

The Concept of Curriculum

Curriculum is a contrivance that prescribes the events of every educational
structure. It is the vehicle through which information and other learning exercises
are disseminated. This shows that the educational programs may be a street outline
for learning and as such centers on information and abilities that considered fit for
learning. Moreover, curriculum has several aspects. It exists as plans and intentions
—the sequence of learning opportunities that one wishes students to experience. It
exists as patterns of classroom activities that are meant to implement those plans
and provide the desired learning opportunities. It exists in textbooks as pages
intended to support or present those classroom learning opportunities. It leaves
marks on what time is devoted to specific contents by teachers or textbooks. It
impacts why schools matter and what students obtain as a result of opportunities to
learn.

The Concept of Curriculum Implementation

This involves the dissemination of the structured set of learning experiences,
the provision of resources to effectively execute the plan, and the actual execution
of the plan in the classroom setting where teacher-learner interactions take place. In
curriculum implementation, the learner for whom the programme is being planned
interacts with the contents and materials in order to acquire the necessary skills,
attitudes and abilities. They went further to define curriculum implementation as the
actual engagement of the learner with the planned learning opportunities. This
means that curriculum implementation is that stage of the curriculum process where
the learner through the guide of a teacher interacts with learning activities so as to
maximize learning as will be noticed in the learners new behavior or new approach
to issues.

Curriculum Implementation and the Curricularist

The teacher as a curricularist is a curriculum implementer. The teacher is one
who translates the curriculum document into employing curriculum through a joint
effort. This insinuates that the task of implementing the curriculum lies on the
teacher. The teacher does not just implement the content as it is, rather he breaks
the content into teachable units. Precisely what comes to the teacher is not the
curriculum plan rather the syllabus which he breaks down to get the scheme of
work, down to the unit of plan and finally to the lesson plan which is being used daily
in his/her teaching.
