Hansel and Gretel

Name: _________________________
© Fun with Mama

Once upon a time there was a very poor

woodcutter. He lived in a tiny cottage in the forest
with his two kids, Hansel and Gretel and his second
wife.
© Fun with Mama

His wife often ill-treated the kids and was always

nagging her husband, “There is not enough food in
the house for all of us. We need to get rid of the
kids.”
© Fun with Mama

She kept trying to persuade her husband to abandon the

kids in the forest. The woodcutter didn’t know what to do.
One night Hansel, overheard the conversation.
Hansel slipped out of the house and filled his
© Fun with Mama

pockets with little white pebbles, then went to bed.

© Fun with Mama

The next day, as the woodcutter took his children into

the forest, Hansel dropped a pebble here and there on
the mossy green ground. The woodcutter had gone to
cut wood and never returned to take the children home.
© Fun with Mama

When night fell, Gretel began to cry. Hansel

comforted his sister and when the moon was up,
together, they followed the gleaming, white pebbles
home. They climbed in the window and slipped into
bed.
© Fun with Mama

The next day, the stepmother was not happy when

she found out that the children had returned. She
kept them locked in their room with a little water
and some hard bread.
© Fun with Mama

When dawn came the next morning, the husband

took his children into the forest again. Hansel, who
had not eaten his bread the day before, left a trail of
breadcrumbs behind him to help him find his way
home.

Hansel did not think of the hungry birds that lived in the
© Fun with Mama

forest that saw him drop the breadcrumbs and flew

behind him, eating them all up.
Again the woodcutter went off to chop wood and never
© Fun with Mama

returned to take the children home. “I left a trail like

last time,” Hansel whispered to Gretel. But when night
fell, to their horror, the crumbs were all gone.

“I’m frightened, cold and hungry.” wept Gretel. “I

© Fun with Mama

want to go home.”
The two children huddled together for warmth at
the foot of a large tree until the sun began to rise.
© Fun with Mama

When dawn broke, they started to wander. Even

though they were lost, they kept walking and
suddenly came upon a strange cottage.
© Fun with Mama

“This is chocolate,” gasped Hansel as he broke a

piece of plaster from the wall.
“And this is icing!” exclaimed Gretel, touching
another part of the house.
The hungry children began to break pieces of candy
© Fun with Mama

off the house and eat them until suddenly, the door
swung open.
© Fun with Mama

“Well, well,” said an old woman. “Haven’t you

children a sweet tooth! Come in, you’ve nothing to
fear!” went on the old woman.
Unluckily for Hansel and Gretel, the sugar candy
© Fun with Mama

cottage was a trap the old witch used to catch her

victims.
© Fun with Mama

“You’re nothing but skin and bones!” said the witch to

Hansel. “I will fatten you up and eat you!” she said,
locking him in a cage.
“You can do the housework,” she said to Gretel. “Then
© Fun with Mama

I will make a meal of you too!” As luck would have it,

the witch had bad eyesight, which was made worse
when Gretel smeared butter all over her glasses.

“Let me feel your finger,” said the witch to Hansel

every day, checking to see if he was getting fatter.
The witch kept complaining that Hansel was not
© Fun with Mama

growing any fatter. What she didn’t know was that

Gretel had brought her brother a chicken bone and he
held that out to the witch when she asked to feel his
finger.
© Fun with Mama

The witch grew tired of waiting and one day asked

Gretel to light the oven. “We are going to have
roasted boy today!” she said.
Growing impatient, the witch asked Gretel to see if
© Fun with Mama

the oven was hot enough yet. Gretel returned and

whimpered, “I can’t tell if the oven is hot enough or
not.”
© Fun with Mama

Angrily, the witch screamed at the girl as she went

to check the oven herself. When she bent down to
peer inside the oven, Gretel gave her a tremendous
push and slammed the oven door shut.
Gretel ran to set her brother free, who then helped to
© Fun with Mama

make sure the oven was tightly shut. They fastened it

with a large padlock.
© Fun with Mama

The children went through the witch’s house and

discovered treasure chests full of jewels and pearls.
They took the treasure with them and set off into the
© Fun with Mama

forest to find their way home. On the second day,

they saw their father come out of their house,
weeping.
© Fun with Mama

He saw them and came running, “Your stepmother is

dead. Come home with me, my dear children.”
“Promise you will never desert us again,” said Gretel
© Fun with Mama

as Hansel opened the casket and showed their father

what they had found.
© Fun with Mama

They all lived happily ever after.
