4.a)An ice plant produce 12 tonnes of ice per day at 00C using water at room temperature of 150C . if the
C.O.P of the plant is 2.6 and overall electromechanical efficiency is 87%.determine the power rating of the
compressor motor. Take specific heat of the water as 4.18 kj/kg k and latent heat of ice is 335 kj/kg.

b)Derive an expression for C.O.P for an air-refrigeration system working on reverse brayton cycle.(7+3=10)

5. a)Describe a simple vapour compression cycle giving clearly its flow diagram.

b)In a standard vapour compression cycle ,operating between an evaporator temp. of -10 0C and condenser
temp 400C ,the enthalpy of the refrigerant Freon-12,at the end of the compression is 220kj/kg .show the
diagram on T-S plane.

Calculate : i) C.O.P of the cycle .ii)refrigerating capacity and the compressor power assuming a refrigerant
flow rate of 1kg/min. Freon -12 property table given below.

b) A Bell-Coleman refrigerator operates between pressure limits of 1 bar and 8 bar. air is drawn from cold
chamber at 90C ,compressed and then cooled to 290C before entering the expansion cylinder. Expansion and
compression follow the law pv1.35=constant. calculate the theoretical C.O.P of the system. For air take =‫ץ‬
1.4 ,Cp=1.003 kj/kg k (6+4=10)

7.a)state merits and demerits of an air refrigeration system.

b)Describe the working of a simple air cycle cooling system used for aircrafts.
c)A cold storage plant is required to store 20 tonnes of fish . the temperature of the fish when supplied =25 0C
storage temperature of fish=-80C ,specific heat of fish above freezing point =2.93kj/kg 0C
specific heat of fish below freezing point=1.25 kj/ kg 0C, freezing point of fish=-30C
latent heat of fish=232kj/kg ,if the cooling is achieved within 8 hours find out.
