H
ow many breakup stories have you read
recently? More than a handful, I would guess.
Heartbreak, at least the romantic kind, is easier
to talk about. There is something so irresistible
about pounding away on a keyboard and lamenting a
lost love over a glass of merlot, with Adele blaring in
the background. It’s cathartic. Instinctive, even.
But when it comes to breakups between friends, it’s
harder to process. When a seemingly unshakeable
female friendship turns sour, we turn silent. Is it
because female friendships run deeper than most
romantic relationships ever could, and therefore
cut closer to the bone when they end? Is it because
boys cheating or lying or letting us down would be a
Marla Miniano, Editor in Chief sweeter pill to swallow than the bitter betrayal only
girls can execute? Or is it because, deep inside, we
know that a falling out between friends is never just
about a singular incident—the resentment bubbling
beneath the surface months and years before it
exploded—and never just one party’s fault?

You no longer have the same hair, skin, and teeth you were born with, so why
shouldn’t your personality and principles follow suit? Take a cue from pop
princess Taylor Swift, whose edgy transformation is hell-bent on radical self-
awareness and proving her haters wrong. It’s okay to make mistakes along the
way—what matters is that your story is yours, and yours alone.

Brain DraineD
There’s no getting around it: Caring about and
making strides to improve your physical wellness
is always going to be a good thing. Unfortunately,
though, we can get so caught up in making sure
our bodies are in fighting form that our mental
and emotional wellness fall by the wayside, even
though they’re just as important to leading happy,
healthy, complete lives. So, do yourself a favor and
spend some time figuring out how to improve the
state of your mind and your feelings, however you
want to do that. Write in a journal. Take a walk.
Visit a therapist. Play with your dog. Just...take
a breather. Remind yourself that there’s more to
wellness than macros and reps. You never know—
it might go even further in making you feel better
than a visit to the gym.

Have you spent too many Friday nights bitching with your work wife about your
colleagues, only to be all smiles Monday morning? It’s time to get “Radically Candid.” It’s
the new management style that’s swept its way from the tech hubs of Silicon Valley to the
ad agencies of NYC, and is now gaining traction. Created by Kim Scott, who has a podcast
and career tome, Radical Candor, on the subject and spent decades in management at
Google and Apple, it involves being completely honest with those you work with.
Feedback, she says should be given frankly, swiftly, and face-to-face, by both managers
and employees. Those who’ve adopted it says it creates a more productive workplace
and cuts out office politics. Bye-bye after-work bitchy wines. Hello, HR nightmare.
