H
ow many breakup stories have you read
recently? More than a handful, I would guess.
Heartbreak, at least the romantic kind, is easier
to talk about. There is something so irresistible
about pounding away on a keyboard and lamenting a
lost love over a glass of merlot, with Adele blaring in
the background. It’s cathartic. Instinctive, even.
But when it comes to breakups between friends, it’s
harder to process. When a seemingly unshakeable
female friendship turns sour, we turn silent. Is it
because female friendships run deeper than most
romantic relationships ever could, and therefore
cut closer to the bone when they end? Is it because
boys cheating or lying or letting us down would be a

Loss of any kind is hard. There’s a one-
year jump, so you don’t get to witness
a lot of her grief. Nancy feels guilty,
of course, because of the crazy way
that it happened. There was the sense
that the whole time, Nancy felt like
she was the only one who was really
looking for Barb. Also, Nancy, Steve,
she is. I think that’s what made sense for
her at the time. With Jonathan, she felt
an obvious, though not entirely defined,
connection. When Will came back,
Jonathan had to focus on taking care of his
family and making sure Will’s okay. Nancy,
on the other hand, was dealing with Barb’s
death, not to mention anger and confusion
about what went down. And Steve was
there for her. As Nancy and Jonathan
coped with what happened separately, a
distance formed between them.

If there is one undeniable
thing in this world, it is
that Sandara Park, K-pop
superstar, international
fashion icon, and
Pambansang Krung Krung
of the Philippines, has awe-
inspiringly flawless skin.
It’s the sort of complexion one tries
very hard not to be distracted by—
the radiant gleam! The immaculate
evenness! The complete and utter
lack of pores!—while she’s animatedly
narrating the events of a recent trip.
Sandara, now 33, goes on with her
vivid storytelling, which trumps the
haze of awe floating around in the
periphery. She’s looking better than
ever, and even in the simplest outfit of
the day, she’s been serving look after
look so hard it’s almost easy to forget
how funny she can be. “Walang bubong
‘yung boat, so ang lamig! And ‘yung mga
waves and the storm...that’s one thing
that made our vacation memorable,”
she says of a boat ride she took in
Coron, where she went with close
friend and former band mate CL. “May
bagyo n‘ung time na ‘yon, so memorable
talaga.” It’s a trip she documents
on-cam, in her now-signature candid
way, on her recently-launched Dara TV
YouTube channel.
“I’ve been shooting since forever. It’s
really fun for me. Dara TV is about my
daily life. ‘Yung lifestyle ko, ‘yung mga
gusto ko. It’s all about me and the things
I love,” she explains. “Marami naman
talagang vlogs about traveling, food,
beauty...maraming mas magaling sa akin.

Pero ako naman, I’m just shooting my
daily life. Wala namang special doon.”
As refreshing and charming as her
humility is, it’s hard not to consider
that what is normal for her might not
quite mean the same thing to the rest
of us, and it’s that juxtaposition she
creates between normalcy and our
fascination with celebrity that keeps us
glued to our screens.
Dara TV is only one of the things
she’s been up to since the 2016
disbanding of one of the biggest acts
to come out of South Korea, 2NE1.
As one-fourth of the band, she was
catapulted to international fame in
2009 with their debut single “Fire”.
2NE1 has since become one of the
best-selling female groups of all time,
and thanks to Park’s unique sense of
style, her front-row appearances at
Fashion Weeks all across the world,
a hosting stint on the beauty-centric
show Get It Beauty, and numerous
cosmetic endorsements that made
their way from country to country
fueled by the global obsession with
all things K-beauty, her face is a
familiar one even to those who have
never heard a single note from any of
the uber-catchy tunes 2NE1 released
during their seven-year run.
Homegirl
To describe her career in such a
way, however, is to undermine the
sheer magic that Sandara Park holds
over her fans in the Philippines,
where the Pambansang Krung’s every
trip back is celebrated like the return
of a prodigal daughter, replete with
fanfare and interviews and stakeouts
at her beloved Jollibee.
“Nakaka-touch talaga,” she shares.
“Lately, dinala ko yung mga friends ko,
sila Big Bang, to Manila. Nagulat sila! Sabi
nila,‘Sikat ka pala talaga dito, Ate!’ They
were really happy for me. Sabi n‘ung
staff ni G Dragon sa kanya, ‘Mas malakas
‘yung sigawan ng mga tao kay Sandara!’ Si
GD naman was very happy and amazed,
so I was really happy.” She adds fondly,
“Sabi ko sa sarili ko, ‘Ganyan talaga ang
totoong sikat: Hindi sila insecure.’”
It was in this country, after all, that
Park first caught the public’s attention
and won audiences’ hearts in 2004 as
a contestant on the reality show Star
Circle Quest. Only 19 at the time, and
more fluent in Korean and English
than Tagalog, Park’s journey was far

Philippines in 2007, and went back
to South Korea. Two years later, after
workshops and training that would
rival that of any elite squad, Sandara
Park was no longer just Sandy, the shy
young girl who cried on just about
every episode of SCQ and coerced us

As with most celebrities, there is always
the curiosity of whether the frankness
we’ve seen in interviews and on her
social media is an accurate depiction of
what the real Sandara Park is like. The
answer: Yes. Well, sort of.
“Halos pareho lang sila, pero Sandara
on cam is more playful, more bright,
kasi behind the camera, or when it’s
off, quiet lang ako,” she admits. “When
I’m with my friends, makulit ako, pero
‘yung pinakamakulit is ‘yung nasa
camera.” It’s a surprise, considering
how much of a natural she is when the
tape begins to roll: on cam, she brings
with her a lovable mix of unstudied cool,
self-deprecating humor, and genuine
wonder about every new place she visits.
“I would really encourage younger
people to travel a lot, kasi before, I was
afraid to go to another country, because
I had a fear of flying,” she says, adding,
“Kahit ngayon, takot ako sa mga places
na hindi ko pa napupuntahan. But I
think it’s really important to meet new
people, and try new, different things—
discover different cultures, different
food. Iba eh. Parang ang liit ng mundo mo
‘pag hindi mo na-experience ‘yung mga
bagong bagay.”

sobrang matatakutin, very shy. Shy pa
rin ako, pero n’ung time na ‘yon, sobra.
In high school, hindi ako nagsasalita. A
teacher asked, on the first day of school,
what we want to be. Sabi ko I want to
be a singer. Tinawanan nila ako. Sinabi
nila, ‘Hindi ka nga makasalita, paano
ka kakanta?’ That made me really sad.
I want to tell my younger self to be
confident, and never give up.”

“I think change is natural. Even if

think magbabago ka,” she says. “Every
year, may bagong dance craze, bagong
fashion. It’s fun to try new things.
My fans naman, nakaka-touch talaga
kasi they love me, kahit anong itsura
ko, kahit anong gawin ko, kahit anong
character ko sa movie.”
Feeling

It says a lot about her that she’s not only
lasted so long, but also blossomed in
two notoriously competitive showbiz
environments. It’s easy, after all, to fall
in love with a pretty face (which she
undeniably has), or even talent in spades
(also part of the Sandara equation—we
mean, have you seen her onstage?!), but
her longevity, hiatus included, rests on
something less obvious.
“When I was young, I didn’t know
anything,” she admits. “After that,
natuto ako na dapat pala walang
sumpong. Cry baby ako noon. Pero
hindi ko na-realize noon na hindi pala
pwedeng ganoon. Personality talaga
‘yung important. Talent, syempre
nandiyan, pero ‘yung ugali mo talaga, mas
important. Professionalism, and not
giving up.”
“Noong time na ‘yon, sinabi ko na ayoko
na, na I want to go home, I want to
quit. And I was crying, hiding under
the table. Lagi nila akong hinahanap!”
she adds with a laugh, “When I went
back to Korea and became part of
2NE1, I knew that I should never do
that. I learned from my mistakes. I
became professional.”
Asking “what’s next” triggers an
enthusiastic sharing of future plans
for her career: music, of course.
More acting along the lines of One
Step, the dramatic film that allowed
her to blend her love for acting with
music. Dance lessons. “I’m trying new
things one by one,” she says. “Next
sana is music, and I’m talking to my
friends na producers. Magagaling sila,
and I started working with them.
Hindi ko pa alam kung kailan, pero sana,
hopefully, ma-release ko na ‘yung
bagong music ko. That’s one of my
biggest dreams for now.”
One doesn’t even have to ask if she’s
content to rest on her considerable
laurels. “Feeling ko, marami pa akong
hindi nagagawa,” she says. “Hindi pa
ako satisfied sa mga ginawa namin.
Parang bitin pa.”
Thoughtfulness washes over as she
shares how she isn’t just doing all this
simply to fulfill a childhood dream;
now, she’s doing it for the fans who
throw their full support behind her,
and who she so clearly loves back. The
fans drive her, inspire her, and keep
her going.
“Lately, may nagtanong sa akin, ‘Ano
ba ang feeling ng may fans?’” she says,
grinning. “Napa-smile ako. Tumaas
yung cheekbones ko. Sabi ko ‘Ito ‘yung
feeling. Naka-smile ka 24 hours.’ May
mga times na down ako, at hindi ko
naman sinasadya, I’d be looking at my
timeline and then may mababasa akong
good things.”
It’s clearly a two-way street, this
connection between artist and fans,
and one reason why Park constantly
challenges herself to get better.
Natural as anyone’s evolution might
be, hers serves another purpose,
and is fed by the public’s love for
everything she does. “There are times
na gusto ko ring mag-give up, pero when
I read their messages, nakakataba
ng puso,” she admits. “Then I realize
I shouldn’t give up, for them, kasi
nandoon sila, naghihintay.”

giving up.”
“Noong time na ‘yon, sinabi ko na ayoko
na, na I want to go home, I want to
quit. And I was crying, hiding under
the table. Lagi nila akong hinahanap!”
she adds with a laugh, “When I went
back to Korea and became part of
2NE1, I knew that I should never do
that. I learned from my mistakes. I
became professional.”
Asking “what’s next” triggers an
enthusiastic sharing of future plans
for her career: music, of course.
More acting along the lines of One
Step, the dramatic film that allowed
her to blend her love for acting with
music. Dance lessons. “I’m trying new
things one by one,” she says. “Next
sana is music, and I’m talking to my
friends na producers. Magagaling sila,
and I started working with them.
Hindi ko pa alam kung kailan, pero sana,
hopefully, ma-release ko na ‘yung
bagong music ko. That’s one of my
biggest dreams for now.”
One doesn’t even have to ask if she’s
content to rest on her considerable

hindi nagagawa,” she says. “Hindi pa
ako satisfied sa mga ginawa namin.
Parang bitin pa.”
Thoughtfulness washes over as she
shares how she isn’t just doing all this
simply to fulfill a childhood dream;
now, she’s doing it for the fans who
throw their full support behind her,
and who she so clearly loves back. The
fans drive her, inspire her, and keep
her going.
“Lately, may nagtanong sa akin, ‘Ano
ba ang feeling ng may fans?’” she says,
grinning. “Napa-smile ako. Tumaas
yung cheekbones ko. Sabi ko ‘Ito ‘yung
feeling. Naka-smile ka 24 hours.’ May
mga times na down ako, at hindi ko
naman sinasadya, I’d be looking at my
timeline and then may mababasa akong
good things.”
It’s clearly a two-way street, this
connection between artist and fans,
and one reason why Park constantly
challenges herself to get better.
Natural as anyone’s evolution might
be, hers serves another purpose,
and is fed by the public’s love for
everything she does. “There are times
na gusto ko ring mag-give up, pero when
I read their messages, nakakataba
ng puso,” she admits. “Then I realize
I shouldn’t give up, for them, kasi
nandoon sila, naghihintay.”

Sandara Park burst onto the local
entertainment scene as a contestant
on Star Circle Quest, and since
then she’s gone on to become an
international star. Yet, she still
hasn’t outgrown her title of
Pambansang Krungkrung.
What are your travel
essentials?
Marami! Lagi akong may excess
baggage! Marami akong liquids,
and meron akong pouch. I have
everything there, like perfume,
toothpaste, toothbrush, hand
cream—kasi medyo dry ‘yung skin
ko—lip balm, mouthwash, cuticle
oil. Lahat talaga dinadala ko lagi.
How do you stay fresh while
traveling?
Makeup lang ’yan. I love blush,
para mukhang fresh and you look
alive. Before, I used brushes pa,
pero ngayon, liquid or cushion. And
lipstick or tint.

Where do you find style
inspiration?
I have a lot of friends in Japan na
designers, and my stylist—who
was the stylist of [Korean girl group]
2NE1—medyo krungkrung din
siya. When I met him, I didn’t know
anything, then I began to learn
naturally. Ngayon, it’s very easy
to get inspiration online. Sa mga
friends ko, maraming fashion people
and marami silang unique na items.
They tell me kung ano ‘yung sikat,
ano ‘yung bago, so it’s very easy for
me to change my look.

bad hair days. “My hair is naturally
curly, so sometimes when I’m too busy
and I didn’t dry my hair well, and I go
out and it’s windy, parang nagiging

dry hair becomes inevitable—turning
her curls into a hot mess. “Sabi nila

though, we can get so caught up in making sure
our bodies are in fighting form that our mental
and emotional wellness fall by the wayside, even
though they’re just as important to leading happy,
healthy, complete lives. So, do yourself a favor and
spend some time figuring out how to improve the
state of your mind and your feelings, however you
want to do that. Write in a journal. Take a walk.
Visit a therapist. Play with your dog. Just...take

me with during my first
ever tarot reading at what

country’s premiere center

spiritualists.
I’ll be the first to admit
that I’ve always been on the
fence regarding any alter-
native healing therapies or
techniques. I’m not quite
an enthusiastic believer,
where a majority of the
people who find them-
selves stepping through
the center’s threshold fall
on the spectrum of belief
(or disbelief). What I do
admit to having is more
than a little curiosity about
the wide, wild world of the
supernatural.

I was scheduled to start
with reiki, a Japanese
energy healing technique
that allows energy from
God, Allah, Buddha, the
universe, or whichever
divine power you may or
may not believe in flow
through you. “Rei in Japa-
nese means ‘divine’ or
‘universal,’ and ki means
‘energy.’ It’s based on the
idea that energy flows
through your body when
you’re happy and feel-

ing good—when you’ve had
enough sleep, when you eat
properly, when you’re able
to let your feelings go. When
you don’t feel good or when
you’re stressed, the energy
doesn’t flow and gets stuck,”
Sarah explains, in a calm,
soothing, cheerful voice
that immediately eases
my anxiety.
Stress, she says, is energy
that can’t flow smoothly
through the body, and the
feeling of relief that reiki ide-
ally gives is because these
sticky points are, well,
unclogged. And with up to
90% of doctor visits result-
ing in stress-related diagno-
ses, lowering stress levels is

But how would I feel dur-
ing and after the treat-
ment? It all depends, really.
“Think of reiki as a spiri-
tual massage,” Sarah tells
me. “You’ll emerge feeling
better.”
I’m told some people fall
asleep, while some people
see visions and colors. Oth-
ers feel tingling sensations or
a comforting warmth. After,
there are reports of improved
sleep, relief from aches and
pains, accelerated healing,
and even shrinking or disap-
pearing tumors. Sarah, how-
ever, is quick to clarify, “Reiki
is complementary healing
therapy.” Meaning, they don’t
recommend exclusively using
it to cure all your maladies.
However, Sarah shares, “On
the scientific level, [reiki]
activates the parasympa-
thetic system, which pro-
duces happy hormones. Reiki
goes through the aura, which
is connected to the chakras,
which are connected to the
endocrine glands.”
It also doesn’t matter if
you’re spiritual or not. “It’s
okay for a person not to
believe in reiki at all. It’s okay
for a person not to believe
in a spiritual source, even,”
Sarah assures me. “What’s
important is that you are
willing to receive healing for
yourself, and that you are
able to relax.”
Hands On
The type of treatment I’m
getting, usui, is probably
what many would consider
“traditional” reiki. Discov-
ered in the 19th century,
it allows a healer to channel
energy into the patient
without feeling drained
in the process.
The treatment proper
begins when I lie fully-
clothed, face up on a bed, and
a tiny pillow is placed over
my eyes. Soothing music
plays, and I hear Sarah’s
calm timbre tell me to take
deep breaths, focus on
clearing my mind, and
allow myself to relax.
This is easy, I think. Con-
scious breathing and all
that—anyone who’s taken a
yoga class can relate.
What sets reiki apart came
next: Sarah lay her hands on
me (note: you can opt to have
your healer lay their hands
over, rather than on you), and
I swear I felt a warm, tin-
gly sensation that seemed to
flow between her hands and
my...everything. It wasn’t
uncomfortable in the slight-
est—just what I would later
discover was flowing energy,
specifically around my prob-
lem areas (my throat, the
center of creativity, and my
solar plexus, the home of
 willpower). Sarah lay her
hands on me for about half
an hour before slowly rous-
ing me back to reality. It was
the most relaxing thing I’d
experienced in a long time.
Giving me a glass of water
after my session, she tells me
about the “messages” she’d
received during the half
hour that I was on her table.
I won’t go into excruciating
detail, but trust, what she
told me made sense—from
the esoteric to the completely
rational level. I’d only had
one session, but I felt calmer,
more conscientious, and took
things a little slower, which
I have to say helped allevi-
ate a lot of anxiety. Placebo?
Maybe. But I’m calling this
a success.
In the Cards
After my reiki session, I was
ushered into the main room
for my tarot reading with
Robert. With 22 years of tarot
under his belt, I honestly
didn’t know what to expect.
Whereas most people get
reiki to help with their stress
or exhaustion, I discov-
ered most people get tarot
for clarity. “Ninety-nine
percent of the time, people
come to me because they
want answers,” he shares.
“They want out-of-the-box
answers. If they say they
have pain and ask me if
they’re sick, I tell them I’m
the wrong dude. If they ask
if they’re going to get sued,
I tell them to go to a lawyer.

veryone loves an inspir-
ing internet story, and
when that said inter-
net story involves pro-
verbially sticking it to The
Man, we, as a collective
audience, are possibly even
more inclined to Like, Share,
Fave, or whathaveyou than
we are when kittens or pup-
pies are involved. This may in
some way explain why, in June
2017, American tech employee
Madalyn Parker’s tweet about
taking mental health days—
and her CEO’s subsequent
support of her decision to
openly discuss and work on
her mental wellness—not only
went viral, but also sparked
much-needed discourse about
why we aren’t paying attention
to and, worse, stigmatizing
mental health.
People from all across the
globe piped in to share their
own experiences regarding
caring for their mental health
in the workplace. Stories ran
the gamut from heartwarm-
ing to despicable, but a
pattern of being the recipi-
ents of passive aggression,
condescension, and even
denial that mental disorders
could be considered actual
illnesses soon emerged. What
sufferers of mental and psy-
chological disorders have
long known soon came to
light: People don’t just misun-
derstand mental illness and
mental health, they’re also
disdainful of it.
Despite nearly one in five
Filipinos suffering from some
sort of psychological disor-
der—whether depression,

anxiety, schizophrenia, para-
noia, or any of the hundreds
of other disorders currently
identified by what is consid-
ered the bible of psychiatry,
the Diagnostic and Statisti-
cal Manual of Mental Disor-
ders—it’s still pretty common
for people with legitimate ill-
nesses to hear such dismissive
statements as “You’re just
sad,” “You’re making a big
deal out of nothing,” or even
“Gawa-gawa lang ‘yan.”
“Mental illness is demon-
ized and romanticized,”
says life coach Melo Laza-
tin, whose clients include
people with and without
psychological disorders.
“People are afraid of what
they don’t know. We try to
make sense of things we
don’t know when we don’t
have the training or the
education to make sense
of it all, and we come to
demonizing or romanticiz-
ing conclusions. These ideas
just keep going on and on
and on. When’s it going to
stop?Only when we realize
that getting sick in the head
is the same as getting sick
in the body.”
In SIckneSS And
In HeAltH
That mental illness is
exactly that—an illness—is
a perfectly logical conclu-
sion to come to. The brain,
after all, is an organ, and
when an organ isn’t func-
tioning as it should, it’s con-
sidered sick and in need of
medical attention. So why
do we consider actively
seeking mental wellness
through therapy, medica-
tion, and even just simple
acknowledgment to be
shameful and taboo?
Lazatin shares that many
people are still uncomfort-
able with the idea of profes-
sional help, whether from
a life coach, psychiatrist,
or psychologist, because
it somehow implies that
there is something innately
wrong with them. “People
are afraid of hearing com-
ments like ‘Why are you
talking to a coach when
you have your parents and
your friends?’ or ‘Why are
you talking to a coach? You
should be talking to a priest.’
Filipinos, in general, are
still wary of support profes-
sions, because there is the
implied admission that you
might not have everything
together and you’re less of
a human being, and that
just isn’t true,” he says. “The
scariest thing about being
human is finding out what’s
inside. There’s a reason
people abuse substances or
sex. When we’re left to our-
selves to discover our own
thoughts and feelings, we
discover things that are
a little scary.”
Seeking professional
help for a mental illness,
then, is considered the
final option rather than
a socially accepted solu-
tion to a massive problem,
primarily because of one
seemingly simple obstacle:
a lack of awareness. Couple
that with the fear that often
accompanies dealing with
something we don’t under-
stand, and you have a per-
fect storm that’s enough
to dissuade anyone from
opening up about their
psychological struggles.
“There was a point in
time that people had no idea
what HIV or AIDS was. They
thought if they shook some-
one’s hand or used the same
utensils or hugged some-
one, they’d get AIDS. That
brought shame to whoever
had the disease,” says Laza-
tin. “If there’s a continuous

shaming culture for a par-
ticular illness, people will be
forced to hide it, and people,
without understanding or
without being willing to
understand, come up with
superstitions about the ill-
ness itself.” Unfortunately,
the effects of shaming cul-
ture on psychological dis-
orders aren’t any better:
illnesses like depression
or anxiety may worsen if
stigmatized by society. “If
we refuse to understand
the illness, the people suf-
fering will suffer more,”
adds Lazatin.
try A lIttle tenderneSS
What, then, is the key to
destigmatizing mental ill-
ness? At the risk of sounding
hokey: education, aware-
ness, and a whole lot of
patience and understanding.
The people who need the
most patience in the world,
after all, are the ones who
don’t get it. “At the end of the
day, it boils down to that. Tell
people the symptoms, the
behaviors, and, hopefully,
we’ll learn to understand
that it’s not about us; it’s
about the person suffering
from the mental illness.”
“Any psychological illness
affects the people around it.
They affect more than the
person who is ill because
we have to interact with the
sufferers. Someone may not
be reacting to us in the way
we want, or we expect them
to respond in some way,
and generally speaking, we
don’t know how to deal with
people who have mental ill-
nesses,” Lazatin adds. “We’re
so fixated on our perspective
of what it must feel like to
have a mental illness that we
refuse to understand what
it’s really like. It’s not about
you. It’s about the other per-
son going through it.”

aren* is part of a
close-knit group of
six girls that have
been friends since
childhood. But there was
a time when a wedge was
driven into their group,
causing their years-old
bond to break. The reason
behind the rift is no lon-
ger important, but how it
happened is: two friends
came head-to-head, sides
were taken, grudges were
nursed, rumors were
spread, and attempts at
reconciliation were com-
pletely seen-zoned—for
years. Before you ask, no,
they weren’t in high school
then. They were in their
mid-20s, tax-paying adults
with cars and condos and
serious partners.
When Karen lamented
about this gnawing rupture
in her once-solid barkada
to her boyfriend, he didn’t
seem that bothered by
the root of the rift at all.

Instead, he scoffed, “We’re
this old and there’s still
drama?”
“I wondered if we were
being petty and were blow-
ing up the issue to be bigger
than it was,” Karen admit-
ted. “My boyfriend said it
wasn’t something he and
his male friends would have
gotten up in arms about.”
Karen’s barkada dra-
marama is not a rare phe-
nomenon. This raises the
question: Why are female
friendships more fraught
with drama compared to
male friendships?
Aggression
A lA femAle
According to Suzy Roxas
(talktosuzyroxas.com), a
counselor and expert on
gender issues in the work-
place, women tend to be
subtler and sneakier when
addressing conflict with
their fellow females, a reac-
tion that is borne out of gen-
dered cultural expectations.
“Women are expected to be
nice, sweet, caring, docile,
and not to fight confron-
tationally,” she says. “As a
whole, Filipinos do not fight
confrontationally; however
the women tend to use a
lot of triangulation, which
means taking sides rather
than focusing on issues.”
This is a far cry from the
way men, who are more
comfortable with confron-
tation, handle conflict.
“Males can show their dom-
inance and competitiveness
and people accept them to
be that way; people in fact
look at them positively when
they are aggressive and
confrontational and com-
petitive, so they are able to
fight more toe to toe,” Roxas
continues.
There is a name for this
type of underhanded
aggression: relational
aggression. In her book
Mean Girls Grown Up: Adult
 Women Who Are Still Queen
Bees, Middle Bees, and Afraid-
to-Bees, Cheryl Dellasega,
NP, PhD says relational
aggression is “the subtle art
of emotional devastation
that takes place every day at
home, at work, or in commu-
nity settings. Unlike openly
aggressive men, women
learn early on to go under-
cover with these assaults,
often catching their victims
unaware.” Dellasega says
that this behavior among
females seems to peak in
adolescence, but many
exhibit the behavior well
into adulthood.
Competition
Causes friCtion
A common culprit that
makes these subtly aggres-
sive attitudes crawl out of
women’s sugar and spice
and everything nice exte-
riors is competition, which
continues to be prevalent in
the male-dominated society
they find themselves in.
When it comes to finding a
match alone, Roxas says that
competition among women
is already inevitable, with
the population skewed with
more females than males.

Add to that the societal
pressure on women to tie
the knot and settle down,
and no wonder women
are constantly vying for
the attention of the men
around them, consciously
or not.
Female-to-female com-
petition can happen in
the workplace, too, where
women are still discrimi-
nated against and as such
are given fewer oppor-
tunities to occupy cer-
tain positions. And when
this competition happens
between friends, it can get
even more vicious.
“Females tend to use a
lot of emotion and a lot of
personal or intimate argu-
ments versus the more spe-
cific, categorical, objective,
and task-oriented argu-
ments that males use,” Roxas
explains. “And so, when
you’re vying for a position
against a fellow female, the
tendency for a woman is to
cite things that have to do
more with relationship, or
how the other dresses, or
how she comports herself,
rather than her skill set.”
Girl(friend) power
Still, don’t write off all the
overwhelming positives
female friendships can
bring, which Roxas describes
as “naturally nurturing, nat-
urally supportive, empathic,
and compassionate.”
While it’s common for men
to bond over shared inter-
ests, females tend to bond on
a more intimate, more emo-
tional level. All those hours
spent chatting, ranting,
and sharing secrets really
do pay off to form deeper
connections.
Imagine running to your
male friends to bawl your
eyes out when your douche-
bag boyfriend breaks up with
you. They would likely freeze
at the sight of a snot-nosed,
raccoon-eyed girl blubber-
ing, “Pangit ba ako? Kapalit-
palit ba ako?” Meanwhile,
expect your female friends
to sit with you, maybe even
cry with you because they’ve
gone through the same
thing, and definitely know
the answer to that question:
“Hindi. Siya ang pangit! Siya
ang kapalit-palit!”

Knowing women’s tendency
for underhanded aggres-
sion, how can you work to
make your own girlfriend
bonds free from toxicity?
Roxas recommends, simply,
“realizing that everybody is
different.”
“One has to understand
the limitations of the per-
son that they’re befriending
and accept their humanity,”
Roxas says. The sooner we
understand that just because
our friends are our friends
doesn’t mean they think and
act exactly like us, the less
we’ll take it personally when
they do things we wouldn’t
normally approve of.
As for that pesky competi-
tion thing? Well, if you can’t
beat ‘em, befriend ‘em. In
her article “Shine Theory:
Why Powerful Women Make
the Greatest Friends” for
NYMag’s The Cut, journalist
Ann Friedman proposes the
following: “When you meet
a woman who is intimidat-
ingly witty, stylish, beautiful,
and professionally accom-
plished, befriend her. Sur-
rounding yourself with the
best people doesn’t make
you look worse by compari-
son. It makes you better.”
So those female friends of
yours that you seem to be
in silent competition with?
Keep them in your circle,
because they can inspire you
to uplift yourself—and that’s
a better alternative to you
dragging them down to level
the playing field.

serves to overwhelm both
parties. Once you begin
to view fights as produc-
tive steps forward rather
than points on the board,
problem-solving will come
more naturally for you two.
There’s also the case of
the overly critical partner.
It’s one thing to give your
partner constructive feed-
back to help them improve;
constantly undermining
and belittling them is a
different matter entirely.
“Criticism starts out on a

Stosny, Ph.D., author of
Anger in the Age of Entitle-
ment. “[It’s] an easy form of
ego defense. We don’t criti-
cize because we disagree

tude.” Ironically, it’s people
who are prone to criticism
that are most affected by
criticism. Stosny empha-
sizes that it’s important to
check not only your inten-
tion, but also your tone.
“Focus on the behavior you
would like to see, not on the
personality of your part-
ner. [You must also] resist
the urge to punish or with-
draw affection if they don’t
do what you want.”

to assert dominance. People
outside of the relationship
are baffled that the abused
party has not decided to
leave; that’s because an even
worse mindset binds the
couple together. “They have
forged a destructive [feel-
ing of merged identity] that
they cannot live without each
other. [This] makes it easier
for a couple to abuse each
other, as they begin to see
each other as extensions of
themselves, not as separate
individuals.” Once domestic
violence has been introduced
into a relationship, it will be
difficult not to resort to it.
If you’ve determined that
you are indeed in a toxic
relationship, the next step
is to have a sit-down with
your partner to see if your
union can still be salvaged.
If you encounter dead ends,
or worse, stronger mani-
festations of toxic behavior,
then a breakup is probably
in your best interest. Con-
fide in trusted friends or
family members, especially
if your safety is at stake.
And remember that a rela-
tionship that’s right for you
is one that makes you feel
loved, not threatened.

“normal” time is a pretty test-
able claim (read: the American
sexual revolution, the birth
of James Franco, the inven-
tion of lava lamps). Unsurpris-
ingly, one of the most iconic
experiments in social psy-
chology took place in 1974: A
group of men ambled through
a life-threatening bridge, all
because an attractive woman
was waiting on the other side
with her phone number. The
control group, who crossed a
safer bridge to get to another
attractive woman, was found
to be less likely to give her a
call. This is the excitation-
transfer theory at work: the
arousal of fear brought about
by the bridge had morphed
into an increased yet mis-
guided arousal for the woman.
This, girls and boys, is the sci-
ence behind the exasperated,
half-clothed makeup sex you
had last Thursday. (Sorry,
Bill Nye.)
We’ve all been there. A
heated argument can very
easily lead to heated sex; the

more intense the argument,
the better the sex. “The high
arousal state associated
with a fight is transferred
to a high arousal state dur-
ing makeup sex,” says Aaron
Ben-Zéev, Ph.D., author of In
The Name of Love: Roman-
tic Ideology and Its Victims.
“[This] is due to the tem-
porary relief at reconcili-
ation with the partner. An

partner [creates] a gulf and
threatens the very existence
of your relationship. Makeup
sex re-establishes that bond
in a very tangible manner.”
Not that there’s any-
thing fundamentally wrong
with some post-LQ action:
makeup sex is a great way
to bookend minor argu-
ments. Psychologist Dr. Coo-
per Lawrence explains that
the days you fight with your

your level of attraction to
them is just as unnatural.
After hours upon hours of
bickering, both of you have a
lot of tension built up—and
nothing alleviates that ten-
sion better than a romp that
not only renders the argu-
ment null and void, but
also validates your mutual
attraction.
The same has been said for
basically any kind of sex that
ensued because your mental
faculties were bogged down
by unresolved emotions.
A meaningless one-night
stand is not going to have the
same effect on you as a sex-
ual encounter with intrinsic
emotional attachment. The
#feelings are what make it
so good, but they’re equally
capable of blowing your
relationship to smithereens.
Trouble begins to brew
when couples use makeup
sex as a crutch. As good as

yet insidious. “Sadly, it’s
often after couples have this
heated sexual moment that
they feel sadder and more
lonely when the old feelings
come back,” Meyers writes.

It’s often difficult to step
outside of yourself and
reevaluate when things
are getting hot, so Meyers
advises readers to take it
slow. “Pull back and explain
that you want to stop and try
again later. If your partner
pushes you to explain what’s
 going on, say ‘I’m not sure, but I
know that it’ll make sense to me
a little later.’”
Worse still is when couples
intentionally pick fights for
the thrill of eventual makeup
sex. But the most dangerous
kind happens after incidents
of domestic violence. “Often,
immediately after domestic
violence, men force their wives
to have makeup sex,” says Ben-
Zéev. “Makeup sex can make
it easier for women to return
to their violent husbands as if
nothing has happened.” If you
or a friend are going through
a similar situation, seek help
immediately.
Sex is and always will be one
of the best ways to feel emotion-
ally connected to your part-
ner. However, it’s important
to be honest with your inten-
tions before your relationship
is irreparably damaged. After
all, sex is all about letting go—so
before you kiss and make up, try
to get some words in edgewise
first. Focus on the conversation,
then move on to the action.

computer science degree and
you don’t but you do have
everything else on the list in
spades, go for it. Just be
thoughtful: If a job requires
seven years of experience and
you only have one, that’s
probably not good enough.
TAILOR YOUR
RéSUMé
Look at the job description
and make sure you’re
mirroring it in some way. If a
company is really large, the
odds of your application being
screened by a robot before a
human are high, so keywords
are important. Put your
résumé through a word-
cloud tool like WordClouds.
com and see what jumps out.
Compare those to the words
in the job posting. You might
be surprised to find that they
don’t match up.
For Skype or FaceTime
interviews, dress like you
would if you were meeting
someone face-to-face. It will
improve how you feel, but it’s
also smart in case the call
takes an unexpected turn. We
were once interviewing
somebody on Skype for a
fairly important position. He
was wearing a tie and a nice
shirt. It was very professional;
then partway through the
interview, there was a series
of knocks on his door, to the
point where he had to get up
and answer it. He wasn’t
wearing pants! (Moral of the
story: Wear pants.)

Send a thank-you e-mail the
same day as your interview.
Be sure it’s personalized—we
forward them around within
the company, so we know
when they’re a form letter.

ages in my aura. Without
any prodding from me, she
immediately zeroed in on
body image, an issue I was
wrestling with at the time.
See, in mid-2016, after fre-
quently working out (three
to four times a week, twice
with a personal trainer)
and changing my diet (no
carbs at night, no snacks,
and no flavored drinks), I
lost about 12 pounds. That
doesn’t seem like much, but
the change was visible and
I felt great. I finally man-
aged to stick to a diet and

Shake it off—
Slowly and SURely
You can choose to be at war
with your body or to make
peace with it. Try and aim
for the latter, says life coach
and plus-sized model Kimi
Lu. “There are a lot of factors
involved in weight gain and
regain. We need to accept
that everything changes,
but more than that, every-
thing is also changeable.
Whichever state you are in
with your body right now,
embrace it,” she says.
Remember that weight
isn’t a competition, and it’s
definitely not a race. Those
kilos you previously lost
didn’t come off overnight,
did they? Losing them
again isn’t going to be easy
either. Instead of turning
to crash diets and target-
ing instant success, aim for
sustainable weight loss via
small and gradual changes
to your diet and fitness
routine (or lack thereof).
Otherwise, you’ll only set
yourself up for failure and
disappointment.
The healer suggested I
ask myself daily, “What
will I do or not do today to
honor my body?” You can
do the same. Celebrate
all your small victories,
whether it’s trading your
usual fast food lunch for a
salad, or successfully haul-
ing your ass to the gym.

looking at other women’s

gram. Instead of a 30-day
fitness challenge, try a
30-day “compliment your-
self” challenge.
And instead of cling-
ing on to clothes that only
make you feel horrible
because they won’t zip up
completely just yet, Lu sug-
gests, “Buy new clothes that
actually fit. Then you’ll feel
more comfortable. If you
lose weight, repeat the pro-
cess. Let go and make space
for new clothes.”
She adds that we need
to keep other people’s
battles in mind. “Every-
one is going through ups
and downs, triumphs and
heartbreaks, and every-
thing else in between,
including weight gains and
losses. It will be a wonder-
ful world for everyone to
live in if we are more lov-
ing to others, whether
we’re a size 0 or a size 18.”
As cheesy as it sounds,
it does boil down to kind-
ness, both to others and to
yourself. I have yet to drop
the extra pounds again,
but here’s what matters
to me: a) that I am mov-
ing forward when it comes
to looking after my body,
and b) that when I look
at myself in the mirror, I
always find something to
love. I hope your reflection
is smiling back at you, too.
