Cultures Reading RL.2.2 - Recount stories,

Social Studies including fables and folktales
from diverse cultures, and
determine their central
message, lesson, or moral.
History 2.1.4 - Explain
reasons for local, state, and
national celebrations, cultural
events, and traditions and
their significance
Activity Example: Students will use the appropriate standard to learn about different cultural
events/traditions. They will read a story about different cultural traditions and participate in a
discussion about the significance of these traditions. How is each tradition unique? Can you find
any traditions that are similar/related?

Evidence Reading RI.2.8 - Describe how

Science reasons or evidence support
specific points the author
makes in a text.
2-ESS1-1 - Use information
from several sources to
provide evidence that Earth
events can occur quickly or
slowly

Understand and Write Steps Reading RI.2.3 - Describe the

in Technical Procedures in Writing connection between a series
Text of historical events, scientific
ideas or concepts, or steps in
technical procedures in a text.
2

W.2.2 - Write
informative/explanatory text
in which they introduce a
topic, use definitions and
facts to develop points, and
provide a concluding
statement or section.

Activity Example: Students will read and discuss sample recipes, then describe steps in technical
procedures in a text through composition. They will bring in written family recipes to share with
the class for the research segment of the lesson. Students will notice and discuss characteristics
of recipes such as the ingredient list, instructions, footnotes, etc. Students will have the
opportunity to write their own recipes in pairs using proper procedure and format. Each pair will
“share the pen” to write a small paragraph about their recipe, including a concluding statement.

Measurement Math 2-LS4-1 - Make observations

Science and/or measurements to
collect data that can be used
to make comparisons.
2.MD.A.1 - Measure the
length of an object by
selecting and using
appropriate tools, such as
rulers, yardsticks, meter
sticks, and measuring tapes.

Maps Social Studies 2.2.2- Interpret physical maps

Writing using titles, key, symbols,
compass rose (cardinal and
intermediate directions) and
alpha numeric grids.
W.2.2- Write
informative/explanatory texts
in which they introduce a
topic, use facts and
definitions to develop points,
and provide a concluding
statement or section.
3

Activity Example: Students will create their own map that they want to live in. It can be a made
up place or a real place. Students will label their map title, write a key, and draw a compass rose
on their map. Students will then be instructed to draw inside their map. After they have
completed their map, students will be instructed to write a short paragraph on what their map is
of, and they will also need to describe at least 2 key components that they included on their map.

Writing in conversations by linking
their comments to the remarks
of others.
RS.2.2- Recount stories,

Geography Social Studies 2.2.8 - Describe the

Science vegetation, the animal life,
and the cultural
characteristics of the people
specific to local regions and
how they are interdependent
2-LS2-2 - Develop a simple
model that mimics the
function of an animal in
dispersing seeds or
pollinating plants.

Matter and Interactions Science 2-PS1-2 - Analyze data

Writing obtained from testing
different materials to
determine which materials
have the properties that are
best suited for an intended
purpose.
2.WS.7 -7. Participate in
shared research and writing
projects (e.g., read a number
of books on a single topic to
produce a report; record
science observations).

Activity Example: After making observations around the classroom and outside of all aspects of
matter, students will participate in group writing assignments. In groups of three, each student
will take a different form of matter and record all information found. Once completed, the
students will work together to make one writing assignment where they compare and contrast the
different properties of each.

Economy Focused Word Social Studies 2.5.3 Explain how scarcity of

Problems Math resources and opportunity
cost require people to make
choices to satisfy wants and
needs.

2.OA.A.1 Use addition and

subtraction within 100 to
solve one- and two-step word
problems involving situations
of adding to, taking from,
putting together, taking apart,
and comparing, with
unknowns in all positions,
e.g., by using drawings and

Observing Lengths and other Math 2.MD.A.4 Measure to

Observable Properties Science determine how much longer
one object is than another,
expressing the length
difference in terms of a
standard length unit.

2-PS1-1 Plan and conduct an

investigation to describe and
classify different kinds of
materials by their observable
properties.
Activity Example: Students will spend time observing a variety of different objects. The students
will be observing several different characteristics including length, color, texture, hardness, or
flexibility. After measuring the lengths of the objects, the students will determine how much
longer one object is than another by expressing the difference in terms of a standards length unit.
