Second Grade- Hannah Bryant, Hannah Hargrove, Grace Gardere, Kristen Olinde, and Ellen
Johnston
W.2.2 - Write
informative/explanatory text
in which they introduce a
topic, use definitions and
facts to develop points, and
provide a concluding
statement or section.
Activity Example: Students will read and discuss sample recipes, then describe steps in technical
procedures in a text through composition. They will bring in written family recipes to share with
the class for the research segment of the lesson. Students will notice and discuss characteristics
of recipes such as the ingredient list, instructions, footnotes, etc. Students will have the
opportunity to write their own recipes in pairs using proper procedure and format. Each pair will
“share the pen” to write a small paragraph about their recipe, including a concluding statement.
Activity Example: Students will create their own map that they want to live in. It can be a made
up place or a real place. Students will label their map title, write a key, and draw a compass rose
on their map. Students will then be instructed to draw inside their map. After they have
completed their map, students will be instructed to write a short paragraph on what their map is
of, and they will also need to describe at least 2 key components that they included on their map.
Activity Example: After making observations around the classroom and outside of all aspects of
matter, students will participate in group writing assignments. In groups of three, each student
will take a different form of matter and record all information found. Once completed, the
students will work together to make one writing assignment where they compare and contrast the
different properties of each.
