HUMANITIES
This is one of the required subjects in college. Generally, it is a set of disciplines that
includes grammar, philosophy, literature, history and music. The meaning may differ to different
people in different ages.
Humanities is the study of arts. It is a branch of learning which concerns with human
thought, feeling and relations. The study of arts is the study of mankind. Humanities has always
been concerned with the importance of human being, his feeling and how he expresses those
feelings. However, it should be stressed that the humanities emphasize analysis and exchange of
ideas rather than the creative expression of the arts or the quantitative explanation of the science
(Menoy, 2009).
As the word suggests, man is the center of humanities. The term is derived from the Latin
word humanus, which means human. This concerns humanity; it records or interprets man’s
thinking, feeling, regrets, aspirations, failures and what he is supposed to do and not to do in the
world.
WHY STUDY HUMANITIES
The relevance of the subject to the course is the most usual question asked by students
regarding the inclusion of humanities in the curriculum. Well, at first the question sounds
reasonable. It is true that subject does not direct anyone to finding fortune. It does not teach
anyone how to produce rice, but further into the deep of humanity unsheathes the question with

its credibility. The question becomes a demonstration of a complete ignorance to the true
meaning of life.
BRANCHES OF HUMANITIES
The humanities can be grouped generally into three namely: fine arts, practical arts and
performing arts.
The following are considered FINE ARTS
a. Painting – This is a kind of art, which main process is applying color or pigment to a
surface. There are different mediums and various types of painting.
b. Literature – This is a kind of art which main medium are the written words. There are
two
main classifications the prose and poetry.
The following are considered PERFORMING ARTS
a. Dancing – This combines movements of feet, hands and body in rhythm. It’s aesthetic
element is seen on the unity and harmony of movements.
b. Ballet – This is a stage performance of narrating a story by combining dance and music
without a dialogue.
c. Singing/Music – The art putting together the sounds in order. Its mediums are either
human voices or instruments, or a combination of the two.
d. Movie – Motion picture that blends together the fundamental and vital elements of music,
painting, literature and music.
e. Theatre – This is another form of stage performance of a play or drama which basic
medium is dialogue.
The following are considered PRACTICAL ARTS
a. Sculpture – Refers to the breaking, and or piecing together a hand stone or other
shapeable
materials to represent something imagined or real. This is an art presented in three
dimensions
b. Architecture – This is an art of designing and constructing a building or other type of
structure. Materials include concrete, brick, wood, steel glass, plaster, etc.

With the advancement of technology, other forms of arts also emerge. Some of these are
cinematography, graphic arts photography and others, which are not mentioned in the groupings
of art above. There are other forms which the committee on National Artists of the Philippines
had considered. These forms of art are; fashion and design, film and broadcast art, visual art,
mural and historical literature.

Lesson 2: Sharpening the Tools for Appreciation (Aesthetic Arts and Crafts)
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Discover the purpose of art in man’s life
Determine the relationship of Arts and Craft
Determine the contribution of learning arts in our daily activity
Identify which category of arts is more applicable in terms of earning for a living
Sharpen the skills in art through practice
Ultimate Purpose of Art

Art fueled by the culture of society moves away from its basic purpose that is – to please
God who had been sorrow since the beginning of the history of humankind. We can’t ignore the
fact that artists today consider more the monetary return and fame from their artistic work rather
than the thought of pleasing their creator. To make this explanation more specific, how much
money does the painter collects from the priest in order to repaint the church? How much money
was collected by the local sculpture from the priest to sculpt the image of the Virgin Mary? The
services to make these things should have been free like what Michelangelo did in the Sistine
Chapel.
God is the greatest artist; the universe is His greatest masterpiece. He created the universe
out of the intention in obtaining joy. Like God, artist should have also created artwork for the
intention of giving joy and spread happiness to others.

Clarification on what ‘Beauty’ is

A student may say that many of his classmates are beautiful while the others may give no
comment. Is beauty only in the eye of the beholder? As said, how do we define beauty?

For the Spaniards, according to Prosper Merimee, to become beautiful a woman must
have 3 dark things: dark eyes, dark eye-lashes and dark eye brow. To a certain village in Africa,
a woman which the longest neck and pouty lips is the most beautiful. To the Filipinos, for a
woman to be beautiful, she must be white, long hair, and pointed nose.

How could we identify the beauty of ourselves in the national setting if we considered the
western look more beautiful? If such are the criteria of beauty, then who are the beautiful people
in the Philippines? Anton Checkhov, a Russian playwright said, “if someone says you have
beautiful eyes or beautiful hair, there is only one meaning of it, and that would be that you don’t
have the item you think about of.”

What we have just dealt about was a pure physical look which is not only concern of art.
God is the greatest artist; there is nothing ugly in his creation. Beauty is something that is beyond
what eyes can see. Beauty is the value that giver (artist) gives and receiver (appreciator) receives.
It is the value of art that stimulates desire of the appreciator.

Harmony in Art

This is about how beauty is achieved by the artist in his work. A work of art has a
purpose, and as we have experienced previously, that is to please God and His people. Art like
anything else is a product of different materials or items that is put together. Achievement of
beauty relies on how these materials or items arranged or put together by the artist. This
arrangement or putting together all the materials or items depends on the craftmanship of the
artist. To come up with beauty, these materials are arranged or fixed in harmony with the
purpose of the artist. There is no beauty if there is no harmony.

Technicalities of Art

Noticeable in the face of Monalisa are lines and forms mingled with colors so as to
produce the greatest painting. The same things are observable in the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel Tower
is considered to be the greatest achievements in the field of architecture. Line, forms and colors
are the most basic elements of visual arts. All arts have elements of their own but in visual art,
there are always lines and forms.

Aesthetic

Aesthetic is derived from the Greek word eisthesis which means “perception”. It is a
branch of Philosophy devoted to the study of art and beauty. It is first used during the 18th
century by the German philosopher Alexander Baugmgarten. This term also refers to the
principles governing the nature and appreciation of beauty, especially in visual art (Radar, 1979).

On the other hand, the term “craft” comes from a German word kraft which means
“power” or “ability”. It denotes a skill, usually employed in branches of the decorative arts (e.g.,
ceramics) or in an associated artistic practice. Craft work is skilled work (meaning: any kind of
craft must involve the application of a technique). Craft implies the application of human skills
through the use of a hand. The concept of craft is historically associated with the production of
useful for various object and art. It tends to produce things which are useful for various human
ways, craft objects tend to exhibit their prettiness around a purpose external to the object itself
(Dutton, 2000).

Categories of Arts and Crafts
