Outcomes-Based Cover Letter

As class ENC 1102 comes to a conclusion, I have created various works throughout this

course that gradually illustrate my growth in my writing. My e-portfolio contains my most

valuable works from this class. For the duration of this portfolio, I will exhibit how I have

executed and reached the four-course outcomes by the Department of Writing and Rhetoric at

UCF. For each outcome, I will present different samples of assignments all throughout the

semester to showcase my thriving success and specifications on how my writing development

fulfills and satisfies the course outcomes.

Outcome 1, "Students will be able to analyze and synthesize complex texts in ways that

demonstrate an understanding of the situated and intertextual nature of writing and research."

Based on the Department of Writing and Rhetoric’s website, I understand this outcome to mean

that students will be able to examine and manufacture difficult and complex texts in ways that

illustrate a deep understanding of what is being read. This may include, citing the text,

summarizing, taking notes as you read, and many more. I argue that I met this outcome because

I carefully read each text I come upon. Not only highlighting the text but summarizing each

paragraph as I go on. Having a highlighter and sticky notes also assist me with this task. Sticky

notes are handy when I am not allowed to write in the book itself. By doing this, I am able to

better acknowledge what is being talked about, because half of the time I tend to find myself

reading something without actually understanding what it is I’m reading. My evidence for how I

met this outcome comes from my own writing is my Annotated Bibliography. In this assignment

I had to look over and examine numerous articles, which included summarizing, writing down

on sticky notes, etc, to form one big argument. As I evaluated one of the sources, I wrote,

“Compared to the last article, this paper specifically focuses on the factors of depression,

anxiety, eating, and neurodevelopmental disorders” (Durolin, 2). This quote shows I met the

outcome because not only did I have to compare the sources to each other, I had to also evaluate

each source and explain how It connected back to the overall purpose of my paper.

Outcome 2, “Students will engage in a recursive, inquiry-based writing and research

process that is meaningful for a specific community”, Based on the Department of Writing and

Rhetoric’s website, I understand this outcome to mean that students take part in and participate

in a research process that is relevant to a specific discourse community. This involves coming

up with a research question or issue related to that community. Gathering various pieces of

evidence to help support the research question. I argue I met this outcome because I've worked

frequently and repeatedly with primary and secondary research. I construct drafts that include

things required for this outcome. My evidence for how I met this outcome comes from my

writing in my Research Proposal assignment. I chose this specific assignment for this outcome

because the discourse community that my research process focused on was social media. I came

up with the research question, “How Does Social Media Affect Ones’ Mental Health”. After

developing this research question I continued my research process by gathering multiple sources

as my evidence to help answer my research question.

Outcome 3 states, “Students will be able to interpret their research findings to produce

arguments that matter to specific communities by addressing real-world exigencies.” Based on

the Department of Writing and Rhetoric’s website, I understand this outcome to mean that the

writer recognizes who their audience is, and with this, they can create writing that best fits the

target audience they are trying to reach. Carefully pick words they want to use, how they want

to organize it, etc. I argue I met this outcome because I have worked towards this outcome by

evaluating my tone when creating a paper, based on the audience I would like to reach and

appeal to. My evidence for how I met this outcome comes from my writing in my final

Research Paper. In this assignment, I had to utilize the skill of knowing who my audience was,

and what was the best way to target them, while appealing to what actually mattered to them.

Finally, outcome 4 states, “Students will examine their own conceptions of writing and

research in response to their inquiry, reading, and writing throughout the course.” Based on the

Department of Writing and Rhetoric’s website, I understand this outcome to mean that students

can see their growth and progress within their writing. Including vocabulary to appeal to the

specific community that was chosen. I argue I met this outcome because I have worked towards

this outcome by being constantly aware of my growth in writing and reflecting on each thing I

create. Though there are times I tend to doubt my writing as a whole. For this outcome,

ePortfolio Reflection #4 and my professors’ comments on some of my assignments help prove

that I met this outcome because they show a reflection of myself as a writer allowing me to have

mental awareness of my growth as a writer.

I can transfer what I learned in this class to other writing scenarios such as realizing

the audience, highlighting, summarizing, and organizing skills, etc, in other my classes such as AMH

2020, and any future English Class. I can use these skills in jobs too because working with people,

makes you decide on what tone you want to use when speaking with certain people. For example, you

would use a different tone when speaking with your manager than speaking with someone you

dislike.
