HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION SYSTEM

ICD
These are the diagnosis codes that translate a patient health condition from words into an
alphanumeric which permits easy storage retrieval and standardization of data for analysis. The
codes helps in defining the patient health sate and to improve or maintain that health state by
providing sign, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints and social circumstances. It comprises
of tabular listing of codes and alphabetical index arranged alphanumerically.

ICD – 9
The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification is called as
ICD – 9.
 The classification system used to record all diagnosis for medical visits.
 The ICD 9 is standard diagnosis codes represents diseases injuries and conditions.
 ICD 9 codes reflect the reasons for services rendered accurately reporting them is
important for healthcare reimbursement research quality measurement and management
decisions.
 Diagnosis code communicates the reason for a medical visit such as chest pain and
demonstrates the medical necessity of the services.
 The digits of the codes are 3 to 5 digits.
 It provides limited detail than ICD – 10. For example there are total of 16 codes available
to describe all of the variations and fractures of femur.

ICD – 10
The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification is called as
ICD – 10.
 It replaces the ICD 9 code sets and includes updated medical terminology and
classification of diseases.
 It consists of 2 parts:
a. ICD – 10 for diagnosis coding in all health care settings.
b. ICD – 10 for inpatient procedure coding in hospital settings.
 It provides greater details example there are over 1530 codes to accommodate significant
differences in the types of fractures of the femur.
 It consists of patient’s condition including severity, complexity, comorbidities,
complication and other parameters of patient’s health state .
 ICD – 10 can strengthen documentation and medical professional can easily serve
patient.
 The digits of the codes are 3 to 7 digits
a. The first three characters shows related conditions.
b. The fourth character defines the site, etiology and manifestation or stage of the
diseases or condition.
c. The fifth character represents the most accurate level of specificity such as location
and laterality; it defines more specificity regarding the patient’s condition or
diagnosis.
d. The seventh character specifies and change the meaning of the description within
different categories.

ICD – 11
 ICD – 11 specifies international standards for systemic recording, reporting analysis,
interpretation and comparison of mortality and morbidity statistical data.
 It is evolved after contribution of experts all around the world.
 It represents significant upgrade from the older versions.
 It is the improved version of resources, treatment, prevention and also clinical recording.
 It is fully electronic, can be used online as well as offline, contains a software
 It is having high coding quality in a low cost.
 It offers more than disease diagnoses for statistical purposes– it also allows for the coding
of signs, findings, causes of injury and harm, rare diseases, medical devices,
medicaments, anatomy, severity scales, histopathology, work or sports activities, and
much more. It links clinical terminology with statistics.
 The 11th version contains 55,000 unique entities.
