LEARNER’S ACTIVITY SHEET IN ADVANCED PHYSICS

QUARTER 2, WEEK 5 & 6

Competency: 1. Discuss the nature of the different types of friction forces—static

friction, kinetic friction, and rolling friction.
2. How to solve

General Reminders: Use this activity sheet for your answers. Use a separate sheet
of paper in answering the exercises IF NEEDED. Read the directions carefully
before doing each task. Return this activity sheet to your teacher/facilitator once you
are through with it.

What is Friction?

 Force that acts oppose the relative

motion of two surfaces
 High for dry and rough surfaces
 Low for smooth and wet surfaces

How is Friction produced?

Friction is produced when two objects

rub against each other

Static Friction

The Force of Static Friction keeps a stationary object at rest!

f s =F N ×μ s
μs =coefficient of static friction

The friction that acts on objects that are not moving is called static friction.

Because of static friction, you must use extra force to start the motion of
stationary objects.

For example, think about what happens when you try to push a furniture
across a

Kinetic or Sliding Friction

Once the Force of Static Friction is overcome, the Force of Kinetic Friction is
what slows down a moving object!

f k=F N ×μ k
μk =coefficient of kinetic friction
Rolling Friction

When an object rolls across a surface, rolling friction occurs.

Rolling friction is easier to overcome than sliding friction for similar materials.
This type of friction is important to engineers who design certain products.
For example, skates, skateboards, and bicycles need wheels that move
freely.
So engineers use ball bearings to reduce the friction between the wheels and
the rest of the product.
These ball bearings are small, smooth steel balls that reduce friction by rolling
between moving
