B. Establishing a Activity: Rough and Smooth

Purpose for the
lesson - Friction also varies on the type of surfaces of the two objects
rubbing against each other. To observe how objects’ different
ELICIT textures of surfaces affect friction, do the activity below.
- You will need any round object like a ball, a marble, or a
tomato and a piece
of cloth (like towel).

Instruction:
1. Perform this activity on a long table or the floor.

2. Set up all the materials, as shown in Figure 5

below.

3. Cover one side of the table with a cloth (like

towel). The covered portion will represent rough
surface and the uncovered portion, a smooth
surface.

4. Place the ball at the starting line of the smooth

surface.

5. Push the ball gently. Mark the point where the

ball stopped. Repeat two more times.
6. Do the same for the rough surface this time.
Repeat two more times.

A boy pushes the ball on an uncovered and covered table.

Illustrated by Orencio D. Estrera

- Answer the following questions by completing Table. Write

your answers on your answer sheet.

Table

- Based on the activity, Answer the following questions by

choosing the word
that best complete the following sentences. Write the words you
have chosen on your answer sheet.

1. How does friction differ in a smooth surface from

a rough surface?
“Friction is (greater, lesser) in smooth surface,
while friction is (bigger, smaller) in rough
surface.
2. How does friction affect the movement of objects
in smooth and rough surfaces? Objects move
(faster, slower) in smooth surface. Object moves
(faster, slower) in rough surface.
3. In this activity, what is the factor affecting
friction? (surface texture, mass).

C. Presenting - Today we are going to discuss the functional force of friction.

Examples/
instances of the - Watch the video lesson about force of friction.
new lesson

ENGAGE

http://youtu.be/MFNmOjuoOcl

- Friction affects the movement of objects. Friction greater the

movement of objects in motion. Friction is lesser in rough
surface and object with bigger surface area. Friction is lesser in
smooth surface and object with smaller surface area.

- You have already learned the functional force of friction. Now,

we will be compare and contrast the frictional force of types of
friction.

D. Discussing new A. Directions: Write the data in the table given.

concepts and
practicing skills #1

EXPLORE

B. Based on the data, answer the questions below.

1. On which surface did the car move with the

farthest distance? It moved with the farthest
distance on the ______________.
2. On which surface did the car move with the
shortest distance on the ______________.
3. The shortest distance that the car could reach,
the highest the friction happened between the
surface of the track and the tires. So, the highest
friction happens when the car moved on the
____________.
4. The farthest the distance that the car could
reach, the lowest the friction happened between
the surface of the track and the tires. So, the
lowest friction happens when the car moved on
the ____________.
E. Discussing new - GROUP ACTIVITY
concepts and
practicing skills #2 Group I
Do the following activities:
EXPLORE 1. Place a wooden block on the table and push it to
slide over the surface of the table.
2. Then place glass sheet on the table and ask the
same pupil to push the wooden block over the
surface of the glass sheet.

Questions:
1. What opposes the motion of the wooden block on
the table?
Possible Answer: The roughnes of surface
2. What difference did you notice when the block
moves over two different surfaces?
Possible Answer: The blocks comes to rest after covering greater
distance on the glass sheet.
Inform them that the surface of table opposes the motion
more than the glass sheet.
3. Why is sliding of the wooden block over the glass
sheet easier than over the table?
Possible Answer: The surface of the glass sheet is smooth
whereas the surface of the table is rough.
Inform them that the roughness of surfaces causes friction.

Group II
Do the following activities:
1. Using a glass sheet. Rub your palm.
2. Pour a little oil on the sheet.
3. Rub your hand again on oily sheet.

Questions:
1. What difference did you feel on rubbing the dry
glass sheet and the oily sheet?
Possible Answer: The oily surface has less friction.
2. How can we decrease the friction?
Possible Answer: By applying oil or grease between
the surfaces which slide over each other.

Group III
Do the following activities:
1. Take a trolley school bag with wheels attached to
its bottom.
2. Ask the pupils to drag the bag on a smooth floor
over the side without wheels.
3. Drag it over the wheels.

Question:
1. Is it easier to move the bag or wheels?
Possible Answer: Yes, the wheels reduce friction
Inform the pupils that friction can also be reduced by using
wheels attached to the heavy objects to make the movement
easier.

F. Developing mastery - Group Presentation

assessment)
