Characteristic of Human Language


Human language is language that is used by human and different with animal
language. These are characteristics of human language:
1. Vocal Auditory Channel: human language has speaker and hearer. It will not be a
communication if there are not one of speaker and hearer.
2. Broadcast transmission and directional reception: human language signal is sent out in all
directions, while it is perceived in a limited direction.

3. Rapid fading: human language can only receive specific auditory information at the
time it is spoken
4. Interchangeability: user of language can be speaker and hearer, together, at the same
time or not.
5. Total feedback: this means that the speaker can hear themself speak and can monitor their
language performance as they go.

6. Form meaning unity: human language has forms.


7. Specialization: human language can be expressed in many situation of
communication.
8. Arbitrariness: human language has system that has no logically reason. Example:
there is reason why we have to call dog, the reason is only because the
community of human agree with that.
9. Discreteness: human language shows the user differences in speech.
10. Displacement: human language never attached by time and place. We can talk
about something that is far away from us and also talk about something happens in
the past or future.
11. Productivity and creativity: human language is dynamic, always grow always
increased.
12. Cultural transmission: human language can be learned by new user. (Human
language as social tool)
13. Duality patterning: human language sometimes has pattern and meaning more than
one.
