Definition of Speech Community

Speech community is a group of people or individuals


that have the same or use the same linguistic system, and have the same assessment of the norms of the language usage.

Types of Language Community


Same language and mutual understanding Same language but do not understand each other

different but mutually understood language

Verbal Repertoire
Verbal repertoire is wide and its all language-manifold owned or

controlled by a speaker.

Based on the broad and narrow verbal repertoire of a speech

community is divided into two, namely:


1. Verbal repertoire that belongs speech community as a

whole.
2. Verbal repertoire that each speaker individually.

Based on the verbal repertoire while owned by the community, the speech community is divided into three,

namely:

Monolingual community Bilingual community Multilingual community
