Introductory Concept
Life would be impossible without friction. We use
friction in most of our activities. You would be able to walk
without slipping and falling because of friction. Friction affects
movement of different objects too. Did you slip when the
pavement is wet or dry?
Most accidents happen during rainy days because the road
is slippery when wet. It is harder to stop a vehicle on wet roads.
Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces
sticking or touching together.
In this learning activity sheet, you will understand the concept
of friction as an opposing force and determine how the kind of
surface and the weight of an object affect friction.
Learning Skills:
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Learning Activities
Pre-Test
Directions: Read each statement. Write True in the blank
if the statement is correct and False if incorrect.
_______1. A wet oily road offers more friction than a dry rough road.
_______2. Rubbing your hands together forcefully create less friction
rather than rubbing your hands together lightly.
_______3. Friction acts in a direction opposite to the direction of the
object’s motion.
_______4. There is always friction when an object is moving on Earth.
_______5. Smooth surfaces produce less friction than rough surfaces.
3
Activity
Materials: ball, clear pavement or pathway
Procedure:
1. Let a ball roll on a pavement or a clear path way.
2. Observe what happens to the ball as it rolls along the
pavement.
Guide Questions:
1. When you rolled the ball on the pavement, did you exert a force?
2. What kind of force did you exert? (contact or non-contact)
3. While the ball is rolling along the pavement are you still exerting
a force?
4. What happened to the ball’s motion after some time?
5. Why do you think the ball stopped rolling?
Analysis
Directions: Study the pictures. Write the data of experiments
below in the given table.
4
The surface The distance (meters)
1.
2.
3.
4.
Abstraction
A. Based on the experiment above, answer the questions
below.
1. On which surface did the motorcycle move with the farthest
distance?
2. On which surface did the motorcycle move with the shortest
distance?
3. The shortest the distance that the motorcycle could reach,
the highest the friction happened between the surface of
the track and the tires. So, the highest the friction happens
when the motorcycle moved on the____________.
4. The farthest the distance that the motorcycle could reach,
the lowest the friction happened between the surface of
the track and tires. So, the lowest the friction happens when
the motorcycle moved on the____________.
B. Compare the frictional force of the following surfaces by
writing greater than or less than sign on the space provide:
1. tiled floor __________ sandy floor
2. wet floor __________ dry floor
3. sand paper ______ plywood
5
Remember
Friction is a contact force. When you roll the ball on the
pavement you did exert a contact force since your hands were in
contact with the ball before you released the ball. While on the
pavement, however, your hands were not anymore in contact with
the ball thus there is no force was exerted by your hands on the ball.
Eventually, the ball stopped rolling after sometime. Friction
between the surface of the ball and the surface of the pavement
caused the ball to stop rolling. Friction is a force that opposes
motion. It is the resistance an object meets when its surface rubs
against another surface like your feet and the floor when you’re
walking. It acts in a direction opposite the natural motion of the
moving object.
6
the object is less. Heavier objects also have more friction because
they press with greater force. Friction produces heat because it
causes the molecules on rubbing surfaces to move faster and have
more energy.
If you want to increase the friction you just have to make the
surface rough! Soccer and softball players use spiked shoes so they
can move with ease in slippery playgrounds.
Application
A.Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer.
1. Friction is a force that always acts ___________.
a. opposite to the object's natural motion
b. in the same direction as the object's motion
c. opposite to the applied force

3. There is more friction between ___________ surfaces.
a. smooth
b. slippery
c. rough
