MUSICAL ENSEMBLES IN OUR COMMUNITY

Musical ensembles can be defined as a musical group formed by a

group of instrumentalists. This can be performed either instrumental or in
vocal form. In the Philippines, there are different kinds of musical ensemble
that mirrors the Filipino origins and culture. One of which is Rondalla ―a
group or a family of stringed instruments that are played with plucking or
by picking. Another musical ensemble that is common in the Philippines is
the use of percussion ensembles like the kulintang ensemble (see.

ensemble which is composed by different gongs and drums. Kulintang has
different rhythmic variation which is common in Mindanao Southern
Philippines played most especially during rituals and festivals. There are
also wind ensembles in the Philippines that are used during an orchestra ―
an instrumental ensemble playing typical classical music; a combination of
different family of instruments. In most of the Churches vocal ensembles
like choir/chorus is also observed. All ensembles have its own timbre
(quality of sound) that distinguishes one sound or one instrument from
another which makes them unique.

Let Us Reflect

Musical Ensembles in Our Community

We hear music almost everyday. As you go to every place, music

differs on quality and styles. When you go to Church on Sundays you will
hear a distinct sound that suits the place. Going to a restaurant will
surprise you with a chilling acoustics too. During fiesta, you will hear a jolly
music of a parade. Music is already a way of life. Here in our country ―
Philippines, music is already been a part of the Nation’s culture and
tradition.

Music created by different group of musical instruments that are

played harmoniously forms a musical ensemble. Musical ensembles may
come into various forms. A sound of a guitar is good to hear but if it’s
accompanied by other string instruments with a proper musical
arrangement, the music will even sound much better. Musical ensembles
play a big part in Filipino entertainment and culture.
