FOREWORD

This Self Learning Kit (SLK) is made for the learners in the Sixth
Grade. Through this kit, they will learn individually. The activities
used in this kit will not just help the learners learn more easily the
competency but will also strengthen their mental ability to think
critically and at the same time develop good study habits
especially when they are at home. The competency which is to
infer how friction affects movements of different objects is very
important for our learners because friction always affects and is
employed in almost all aspects of living.

It is expected that through this Self-Learning Kit the learners

will be able to develop and hone important skills and knowledge
and use them in their daily living.

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

We will be learning about friction, its nature and how it

affects the motion of objects. Look and examine carefully the
tables and diagrams below in order to fully understand the
concepts. Enjoy your learning journey!

SCIEXPLORE TIME!

What is Friction?
Friction is a force that opposes motion and acts in a
direction opposite to the motion of the moving object.

https://www.google.com/search?q=friction&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjVlPWUo-
jsAhWMH3AKHdGQCKwQ_AUoAXoECBcQAw#imgrc=RKHVlK2gAXY84M&imgdii=XwcJdUmh1f7LLM

Friction is produced when two surfaces rub each other.

Friction produces heat. Example is when you rub your two hands
together just like the illustration below.
Trial Distance(m) Time(s)

https://images.app.goo.gl/fzBrzdo2c2vy2Bmz9

Study carefully the tables below. Let’s find out how friction
affect the distance travelled by moving objects on smooth and
rough surfaces.

Distance travelled by a rolling ball on a smooth surface.

Distance travelled by a rolling ball on a rough surface.

Trial Distance(m) Time(s)

2 3 12

https://images.app.goo.gl/xfEE3exeJpKYJ5Co9

Based on the tables presented, you have observed the

movement of the ball on two different surfaces. On smooth
surface the ball rolled easily or fast as compared to rough surface.
Trial one on smooth surface registered only 3 seconds in time as it
moves in a distance of 2 meters while on rough surface, the ball
rolled slower for it took 9 seconds.
So, there is a need to exert a greater force for the ball to roll
on rough surface as compared to smooth surface. Friction is
greater on rough surfaces than on smooth surfaces, that is why,
the ball travelled faster and farther on smooth surface than on
rough ground. This shows that friction affects movement of
objects. Friction slows down the movement of objects and caused
them to stop.

NegOr_Q3_Science6_SLKWeek1_v2

7
●Friction is greater ●Less friction, objects move
on rough surfaces than faster.
on smooth surfaces. ●More friction, objects
●There is a need to move slower.
exert a greater force on ●Friction produces heat
rough surfaces than on ●Without friction, moving
smooth surfaces. object might not stop.

It would be difficult to live in a world with no friction.

Automobiles, airplanes and other vehicles would have a tough
time trying to slow down or stop because they would be trying to
brake on a frictionless surface. Doing actions as simple as walking,
writing, and eating would be impossible.

Furthermore, it is expected that
through this kit, the pupils will learn
independently and be able to
master the basic concepts on
friction.
So come on, join us in our
learning journey and help us find out
how friction affects the movements
of different objects.
