ELICIT
B. Establishing a purpose
for the lesson Say: Look at the pictures below. Do you know how heat transfer to the water and
other liquid materials?
ENGAGE

C. Presenting examples/ Convection is the transfer of heat from one place to another by movement of
instances of the new lesson fluids. Fluids include liquids and gases. Convection involves the motion of
fluids in currents. When water is heated in a kettle (see figures 1 and 2), hot
ENGAGE water rises and cold water sink until all the water is at the same temperature
and you see bubbles.
As shown in figures 2 and 3, when boiling water, the heat passes from the
burner stove into the pot, heating the water at the bottom. Then this hot
water rises and cooler water moves down to replace it, causing a circular
motion. This motion is due to density differences that result from
temperatures differences.

Another example in figures 5 and 6, hot air balloon, a heater inside the
balloon heats the air and so the air moves upward. This causes the balloon
to rise because the hot air gets trapped inside. When the pilot want to
descend, he releases some of the hot air and cool air takes it place, causing
the balloon to lower.

This is also true in winds and breezes as you can see in figures 7 and 8.
Warm air rises, expands and cools. Cool air sinks. Convection is the reason
why we have wind movements and local
breezes. During daytime, air over the land is heated. It rises and expands.
Cool air over the sea moves towards the land. That’s why you feel a
refreshing breeze by the seaside during daytime. Cool air sink because it is
heavier then warm air.
Heat convection is very important in your lives. You have often observed it in
day to day life, like the steaming beverage, hot air popper, using air hand
dryer, in air-conditioner, refrigerator, air rising and falling near a heater,
these are all examples of heat convection that are shown in figures 9-14.

D. Discussing new concepts You can also observe how heat is transferred through liquid in doing the
and practicing new skills #1 simple experiments below. Be sure to ask help to your parents/guardians at
home in doing each activity. Read carefully the directions before
performing the experiments.
EXPLORE ACTIVITY 1: How Heat is Transferred through Liquid?
What you need:
 2 clear glasses
 food coloring
 hot and cold water

What to do: cold hot cold hot

1. Get two clear glass.
2. Fill one with cold water and a drop of food coloring.
3. Fill the other with hot water and a drop of food coloring.
4. Observe what happens after 5 minutes.
5. Write your answer in your Science notebook.

Guide Questions:
1. What happens to the cold water and a drop of food

coloring after 5 minutes?

2. What happens to the hot water and a drop of food

coloring after 5 minutes?

3. Which of the two glasses of water with food coloring spread faster?
E. Discussing new concepts Directions: Perform the activities below and answer the guide questions.
and practicing new skills #2
Activity 1 “Melting Candle Wax”
EXPLAIN
ACTIVITIES
How Heat is Transferred through Liquid?
What you need:
 10 pieces mongo seeds
 casserole with halfway water

 stove burner

What to do:
 Boil a casserole with half water and 10 pieces of mongo seeds on a stove
burner.
 Observe the temperature of the water and the movement of the mongo
seeds after 3 minutes.

Guide Questions:
1. What happens to the temperature of the water after 3 minutes?
2. What do you notice about the movement of the mongo

seeds in the casserole?

3. Why did the mongo seeds move that way?
4. What could you infer about the temperature of the water-based on the
graph created?

F. Developing Mastery Directions: Check (√) the picture that shows example of convection.

ELABORATE
The transfer of heat from one place to another by the movement of fluids is a
process of (1) __________. Convection is usually the dominant form of heat
transfer in (2) __________and (3) ___________. It is also the process by which
masses of relatively warm air are raised into the atmosphere, often cooling
and forming clouds, with compensatory downward movements of cooler air.
This up-and- down motion creates what are called convection currents.
Convection currents are (4) __________movements of heated fluids that help
spread the heat. While (5) ______________ puts warm air out at the top and
draws in cooler air at the bottom.
I. Evaluating learning VALUING
