Heat Transfer in Different Materials
1

Have you experienced walking barefoot outside your house on a hot day? How did the skin of your feet touching
the ground feel? Did you like it? Your feet felt the heat of the ground right?

The heat of the sun travels. When it reaches the earth, it warms the surface of the earth. Heat can travel in
different objects. It can move through a material without the material moving itself.

In this lesson, you will learn the type of materials that transfer heat and how heat can be transferred in
different materials.
What’s In

Direction: Describe what happens to the magnets if they are in the following situations as shown in the
drawings below.
17. ANCHOR What’s New
Let’s do This!

Direction: Prepare the needed materials in the activities below. Follow the directions given. Based on your
observations, answers the guide questions that follow after each activity.

Activity 1: Conduction

Materials:
• 1 cup with hot water
• metal spoon

Direction:
1. Place the cup with hot water on a table.
2. Place the metal spoon into the cup of hot water.
3. Feel the outside surface of the cup with your fingers.
5. Remove the spoon and feel the part dipped in water.
Guide Questions:
1. What did you feel when you touched the surface of the cup with
your fingers?

2. What can you say about the part of the spoon dipped in the hot water when you touched it?

3. What is responsible for the condition you observed of the cup and the spoon?

Activity 2: Convection
Materials:
• cooking pot
• 8 cups water
• 1 cup mongo seeds or any beans or rice granules
• metal ladle

Direction:
1. Put water into the cooking pot.
2. Add the mongo seeds or rice
3. Place the cooking pot over a fire and allow to boil.
4. When it is boiling, observe what happens to the water and the mongo or rice granules inside the
cooking pot.
5. Stir the mixture using a metal ladle.

Guide Questions:

1. Describe the movement of the mongo seeds or rice granules while the water was boiling?

2. What is the direction of the movement of water while it was boiling?

Activity 3: Radiation
Do this activity when somebody is cooking food at home.

1. Get near the stove.

2. Slowly move your hand nearer to the flame (fire).
3. Remove your hand if it’s already very hot.

Guide Questions:

1. Describe what the skin of your hand felt as you moved it nearer to the flame.

2. Was there a direct contact between your hand and the flame?

Learning Circuit

Heat is transferred from one particle of matter to another in an object. In fluids such as liquids and gases, heat
moves from a region with higher temperature to a region with lower temperature.
The heat of the Sun travels and warms the surfaces of the Earth. It travels through liquid and gas. Heat travels
upward as the warmer liquid rises and reaches the region which is relatively cooler.

Conduction is the transfer of heat among solid materials.

Conduction is the heat transfer from a substance to another
by direct contact. The materials do not move while heat is
transferred.

Figure 3. Conduction

Conductors – are materials that allow heat to flow through easily. Metals are good conductors.
That’s why we use them as cooking utensils because heat moves fast through the metal pan to the
food.

Insulators – are materials which heat passes slowly or not at all. Some good insulators are cloth,
rubber, wood, plastic and ceramic.

Convection is the transfer of heat from one place to another by movement of fluids.
Fluids include liquids and gases. It involves the motion of fluids in current. When gas or liquid is
heated, it carries the thermal energy as it moves away from the source of heat.

Figure 4 convection

When water is boiling, the water at the bottom of the pot heats first. The hot water moves up while
the cold water sinks and get heated at the bottom. The movement of warm water up and the
movement of cold water down creates current.

Warm air rises, expands and cools. Cool air then moves down or sinks. During daytime, warm air
on land rises and expands while cold air from the sea moves towards the land. Convection is the
reason of wind movement.

Radiation is heat that is transmitted or transferred through space. It

does not depend on the presence of matter or a material to transfer heat.

The heat we receive from the sun is radiant energy, which includes infrared (heat) rays that
warm you, ultra violet rays that cause sunburn and visible light that lets you see. Radiant energy
travels as waves through space. Heat waves from the sun warms the earth.

Examples of radiation:
• Your house gets warm when the sun’s waves or rays travel through the windows and are trapped
inside.
• you feel the heat when you are near a source of fire
• Heat near a flat iron.
• Heat you feel when near a fire.

Guide Questions:

1. How is heat transferred during conduction?

2. In convection, which is responsible for transferring heat from one place to another?

3. Why is presence of matter or material not needed to transfer heat in radiation?

20.
What’s More
Let the Sun Shine

Exposed to the sun?

2. What c change in the appearance of the margarine after being exposed to the aused the sun?

3. Give one example of cooking at home where food is cooked

even without being in contact with the fire or source of heat.
