Video presentation on Heat Transfer.

Students relate the video to the next topic. Students determine if
the following concepts are true or false.

Concept Check :
1. Heat is not a substance. (true)
2. Heat is not energy. (false)
3. Heat and temperature are one and the same. (false)
4. Heat transfers from hot to cold medium. (true)
5. The amount of heat transferred is determined always by the
change in temperature. (false)

Explore Students perform Activity No. 2 “Dye in Water”

Objective: At the end of this activity, you should be able to

describe the scattering of the dye in water at different
temperatures and explain the effect of temperature to
the particles in water.

Materials Needed:
3 transparent containers hot water dye (food color)
1 thermometer tap water
3 plastic droppers cold water

Procedure:
1. Fill the three containers separately with cold water, tap water,
and hot water.

2. Measure the temperature of the water in each container.

Record your measurements in Table 2 below.

Table 2: Data for Activity 2

Container Temperature (°C) Observations
Container 1
Container 2
Container 3
3. With the dropper, place a drop of dye into the center of each
container as shown in Figure 2. (Note: It is better if you place
drops of dye into the three samples simultaneously.)
4. Carefully observe and compare the behavior of the dye in the
three containers. Write down your observations in Table 2.

Guide Questions:
Q9. What similarities and differences did you observe when a
drop of dye was added to each container?

Q10. In which container did the dye scatter the fastest? In which
did it scatter the slowest?

Q11. How do you relate the temperature of the water to the rate
of scattering of the dye?

Q12. In which container are the particles of water moving

fastest? In which container are the particles moving slowest?

Q13. How is temperature related to the speed of the particles?

Q14. How is temperature related to the kinetic energy of

particles?
Explain Post Lab Discussion
1. Group presentation of students’ observations and answers to
questions. Use rubrics to give scores. Correct misunderstood
concepts and supplement ideas.
2. Explain temperature effect on the particles added.
3. Explain the relationship of temperature with the kinetic
energy of each set-up.

Rubric scoring guide.

Elaborate Video Presentation: Illustrating the behavior of liquid particles in
cold and hot temperatures.

Demonstration Activity:
Using 2 transparent containers with hot and cold waters, the
teacher drop a few sugar crystals.
Guide Questions:
1. To which container did the sugar crystals easily mixed,
hot water or cold water?
2. How is your observation related to the result of the earlier
group activity?
Evaluate In a ¼ sheet of paper, answer the following questions:
1. In which liquid would a solid particle moves the fastest?
a. cold water b. hot water c. tap water

2. What would happen to liquid particles when temperature

is decreased?
a. Liquid particles move slowly.
b. Liquid particles move faster.
c. Liquid particles stay in place.

3. How does temperature affect the movement of particles?

a. A change in temperature will cause the particles to
stop moving.
b. A change in temperature will cause a change in
the movement of particles.
c. A change in temperature will not affect the movement
of particles.

4. What is the best illustration to show the relationship of

temperature and kinetic energy of particles?
a. T = KE
b. T = KE
c. T = KE

5. What is the relationship of the temperature of liquid to the

kinetic energy of particles?
a. No relationship
b. Inversely proportional
c. Directly proportional
Extend At home try to do an activity on melting coffee or milk powder to
both hot and cold water. Observe how heat transfer takes place.
Write down your observations.
