I. Introductory Concept
Everything on Earth is affected by gravity – it is the force that the earth exerts on all
the objects (matter) on and around it. Gravity pulls everything down toward the ground or the
earth.
Get to know more about gravity in the activities you are about to explore through this
Learning Activity Sheets (LAS). Read and perform the prepared activities only for you.

III. Activities
A. KICK BALL

Directions: Prepare the materials indicated. Read and follow the procedures carefully.
Observe what happens. Note your observations.

Materials:

✓ 1 rubber ball
Procedure:
1. Do the following situations to the ball. Note your observations.
a. Throw the ball directly upward
b. Kick the ball to the left and then to the right
c. Roll the ball forward on the ground

(Note: If any ball is unavailable, look for any material that can be thrown upward and
rolled forward. Do not use stones or any hard or sharp objects!)

B. PAPER FALL

Directions: Prepare the materials indicated. Read and follow the procedures carefully.
Observe what happens closely. Note your observations.

Materials:

✓ 1 sheet of bond paper


✓ 1 sheet crumpled ball of bond paper

Procedure

1. From an elevated height (you can step on a chair or a few stairs), raise the sheet of paper
and the crumpled papers on the same height.
2. Release both papers at the same time. Observe closely which of the two landed on the
ground first and which landed last. Note your observations.
3. Repeat the procedures two (2) more times for a total of three (3 trials).

1. What happened to the ball that was kicked upward after it reached its highest point?

Directions: Write the results of the trials in the table, then answer the guide questions. In
the table below, indicate which paper landed first by writing 1st and which landed last by
writing 2nd.

V. Abstraction
Objects thrown upward fall back to the earth after reaching its highest point. Similarly,
objects kicked to the left or to the right fall back to the ground. Objects that are rolled, pushed,
or pulled across the ground will remain on the ground. It will roll or move to the direction it was
made to move for some time before stopping due to gravity and friction but it stays on the
ground and will not float off.
On Earth, gravity is not the only force that is acting on an object. Frictional force is also
present. For objects that are on the ground or that are in contact with other objects, the effects
of frictional force and its presence is easily observed and can easily be pointed out. But in
objects that are falling such as the two papers in the experiment. The frictional force is provided
by the air resistance from the air particles surrounding and interacting with the papers before,
during, and after their fall. For the sheet of paper, since it has a larger surface area, it interacts
more with the air particles surrounding it, hence, there is greater air resistance.
In the case of the crumpled paper, however, the surface area is relatively smaller
compared to the sheet, this then decreases the amount of air particles interacting with the
crumpled paper and so, less air resistance. Since, the crumpled paper has less air resistance,
it falls faster than the sheet of paper even though they are both acted on by the same gravity.
Gravity has too many beneficial effects, but to name a few, we have our movements
for example. Our mundane movements every day will not be possible, will not be done without
the presence of gravity. We will not be able to walk, drive, and run. Our things will also be in
disarray because it will all float off without gravity.
On other important things, the very air that we breathe will float off to space without
gravity. The ocean and all the water in the planet will also float off leaving us without water
that is if we can still drink water properly.
Even the fluids inside our body will not have its usual course without gravity which will
eventually lead to death. To sum it all, we little to no chance of surviving long without gravity.
VI. Application

Directions: Draw a smiley if the statement shows the presence of gravity and a sad face
if the statement describes the absence of gravity.

1. Everything inside the classroom is in proper place.


2. Keeps your drink to stay at the bottom of your glass instead of floating at the top of
your glass.
3. The blood inside our body will move up to our head, blood circulation will stop and we
will die.
4. It causes the downpour of rain.
5. Garbage will float and scatter in the air.
