GRAVITY
I. Introductory Concepts
Gravity is the force by which a planet or other body draws objects toward its
center. The force of gravity keeps all of the planets in orbit around the sun.
Why do you land on the ground when you jump up instead of floating off into
space? Why do things fall down when you throw them or drop them? The answer is
gravity: an invisible force that pulls objects toward each other. Earth’s gravity is what
keeps you on the ground and what makes things fall.
Sir Isaac Newton was the scientist who discovered the principle of gravity.
According to this principle, everything in the universe, whether big or small exerts
gravity on other things. The amount of gravity pulling objects together depends on
two things: how much mass the objects have, and how far apart the objects are. The
gravitational force exerted by the earth on an object is equivalent to the object’s
weight. The greater mass an object has, the greater its weight. In the same way that
the farther away objects are from each other, the less gravitational pull there is, but
it never stops working. Gravity pulls over infinite distances.

II. Learning Skills/Competency

• Infer how friction and gravity affects movements of different objects(S6FE-IIIa-d-1)

III. Activities
Activity 1
Observing Force of Gravity
What you need:
Crumpled paper
Eraser
Pencil
Spoon
Pebble/small rock

1
What you need to do:
1. Grab two objects (refer to the table below) and stand up.
Stretch your arms in front of you at the shoulder height, and let
go of them at the same time. Repeat this for 3 times and write
your observation in the table below.

3. What force acts on the objects as they fall on the floor? ________________________

4. How is the mass of an object related to the gravitational force given the same
rate? ___________________________________________________________________

Activity 3
Let’s Check
Direction: Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is wrong.

_____1. The principle of gravity was discovered by Sir Isaac Newton.

_____2. The lesser the mass of an object, the greater the pull of gravity on it.
_____3. Gravity keeps anything from going up.
_____4. Gravitational pull between objects increases as the distance between them
decreases.
_____5. Gravity is the force between any objects in the universe.
_____6. For objects here on Earth, the prevailing gravitational force is exerted by the
moon.
_____7. The gravitational force is greater, but as the distance increases, the
gravitational decreases.
_____8. The effect of gravity on earthly objects is the same, regardless of the mass of
those objects.
______9. The greater the mass of an object, the greater its weight.
_____10. The gravitational force directed when you are holding a glass is going
upward.
