4 Chemical Properties of Acid and Alkali


1.Chemical properties of acids:

a.Acid react with base to produce salt and water.

i) HNO3 + KOH →

ii) H2SO4 + CuO →

b.Acid react with reactive metal to produce salt and hydrogen gas.

i) H2SO4 + Mg →
ii) HCl + Zn →

c.Acid react with metal carbonates to produce salt, water and carbon dioxide gas.

i) HCl + CaCO3 →

ii)H2SO4 + Na2CO3 →

2.Chemical properties of alkalis:


a.Alkali react with acid to produce salt and water.

i) NaOH + HNO3 →

ii) KOH + H2SO4 →

b.Alkali react with ammonium salt to produce salt, water and ammonia gas

i) NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 →

ii) NH4SO4 + NaOH →

c.Alkali react with transition metal ions from coloured precipitates.

i) MgCl2(aq) + NaOH(aq) →

ii) CuSO4(aq) + KOH(aq) →
