Music Handbook

Eau Claire Elementary School

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! My name is Ms. Emmeline Liske and I am excited to
begin manother year as music teacher at Eau Claire Elementary school. I look forward to
meeting or continuing to get to know you and your students this year!

In my music classroom, I strive to instil a lifetime appreciation of music by using music


education as a means by which to develop lasting learning and interpersonal skills. I will work to
meet curriculum based objectives in a way that is meaningful and relevant to students’ interest
and culture, and strive for excellence and equity for all students.

Class Description
Expect your student to be engaged in music class each day with creativity, physical participation.
I will guide them through a variety of active, participatory learning experiences

Performance activities will include...


● Singing alone and with others
● Exploring basic skills such as steady beat, counting rhythms
● Performing on a variety of percussion instruments such as xylophone and bells
● Performing on recorder adn ukulele (grades 4-5)
● Creative improvisation with guidelines

Non-performance music experiences will include...


● Developing music reading and notation skills
● Connecting music to history, culture, and their personal lives
● Listening to and analyzing music recordings and performances
● Experiencing multicultural music embedded in the curriculum

Goals
By studying music, elementary students will...
● develop creative self-confidence
● become compassionate individuals through analysis on performance of a variety of music
● experience joy and self-pride
use music as a means through which to express feelings and life experiences
● develop interpersonal skills through collaborative learning
● begin to develop a lifetime personal appreciation for music

Grading
Attendance is essential in music classes as learning is based on in-class experiences. Students
should attend music class whenever possible, but attendance will not impact grading

Classroom grades will be assigned based on the following criteria:


● Student attempts new learning skills with effort and a positive attitude.
● Student demonstrates cooperation and respect in the classroom.
● Student shows progress toward mastery of curriculum standards and objectives (through
formal and informal assessments of daily lesson objectives, classwork, and activities).

Grades will be represented as follows:


● 3- Always/Almost Always
● 2- Sometimes
● 1- Rarely
● n/a: Student is exempt from grade
