A Survey of Learning Styles among Extroverts and

Introverts During Online Learning

INTRODUCTION

English language is the first foreign language taught as one of the main subject in
Indonesia. It mostly deal with the challenges of learning and using the language, whether at
school, at work or in daily life. This might be difficult for Indonesian students to learn it. The
learners might facing some difficulties when they do not have appropriate learning style in their
learning process. Especially with the current situation where the learning process is being held
online. Therefore, in order to overcome the difficulties in their learning, those students must have
learning style applied in learning process. Learning styles and personality types are connected to
each other since both of them could be the factors that affect language learning process. The
terms introvert and extrovert were introduced into psychology by Carl Jung, although both the
popular understanding and current psychological usage vary. Extrovert tends to be manifested in
outgoing, talkative, energetic behavior, whereas introvert is manifested in more reflective and
reserved behavior. Jung defined introvert as an "attitude-type characterized by orientation in life
through subjective psychic contents", and extrovert as "an attitude-type characterized by
concentration of interest on the external object".

Extrovert (extraversion) is the state of primarily obtaining gratification from outside

oneself. Extroverts tend to enjoy human interactions and to enthusiastic, talkative, assertive, and
gregarious. Extroverts are energized and thrive off being around other people. They take pleasure
in activities that involve large social gatherings, such as parties, community activities, public
demonstrations, and business or political groups. They also tend to work well in groups. An
extroverted person is likely to enjoy time spent with people and find less reward in time spent
alone. They tend to be energized when around other people, and they are more prone to boredom
when they are by themselves. Introversion is the state of being predominantly interested in one's
own mental self. Introverts are typically perceived as more reserved or reflective. Some popular
psychologists have characterized introverts as people whose energy tends to expand through
reflection and dwindle during interaction. This is similar to Jung's view, although he focused on
mental energy rather than physical energy. Few modern conceptions make this distinction.
Introverts often take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing, or meditating. An
introvert is likely to enjoy time spent alone and find less reward in time spent with large groups
of people. Introverts are easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation from social gatherings and
engagement, introversion having even been defined by some in terms of a preference for a quiet,
more minimally stimulating external environment. They prefer to concentrate on a single activity
at a time and like to observe situations before they participate, especially observed in developing
children and adolescents. They are more analytical before speaking. From the statement above,
this study was conducted to investigate learning style preferred by Introvert and Extrovert
students and to examine the most frequently preferred learning style of Introvert and Extrovert
students in general.

METHODOLOGY

The design of this research is comparative descriptive research. Comparative descriptive

research is research that compares one or more variables on two or more measurement
differences, or on time differences (Sugiyono, 2016, p. 36). In this study, researchers compared
the significant differences between groups of introverted and extroverted students with general
students. Quantitative research is defined as a systematic investigation of phenomena by
collecting measurable data by performing statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques.
Most quantitative research is carried out using statistical methods used to collect quantitative
data from research studies. In this research method, researchers and statisticians use
mathematical frameworks and theories related to the quantity in question. This research method
translates data into numbers to analyze the findings. Quantitative research can be descriptive,
correlational, and associative based on the relationship between the variables. The purpose of
quantitative research is to determine the relationship between variables in a population. There are
two kinds of quantitative research designs, namely descriptive and experimental. Quantitative
studies take measurements only once. This means that the relationship between variables is
executed only once. Meanwhile, experimental studies make measurements between variables
before and before to see the cause-and-effect relationship of the phenomenon under study.
To obtain valid data from respondents, this study will use a questionnaire to collect data. The
questionnaire used was distributed using the "Google Form". Google form as data collection
media. Google forms as data collection media. The object of this question is students and also the
general public. Several questions will appear on the Google form in the questionnaire:

 What is Personality do you have,

 Contribution in social life,

 Skills and responsibilities,

 People's responses to themselves,

 Hope for yourself.

After making a Google form with some questions, the researcher will get the data and make
conclusions from it. Finally, the researcher will make a summary of each question and make
conclusions from all the data obtained by the researcher.
