ESTABLISHING YOUR CAREER

GOALS & MOTIVATIONS

Resources to help you find your next role
Establishing your career goals & motivations

Everyone has some sort of a picture in their minds in terms of where they
see themselves professionally a few years down the line. However,
sometimes, in a chase for “short-time results”, you can make choices that
lead you away from your long terms goals rather than towards them.

As a result, it is extremely important to clearly establish your career

motivations and goals and use these as a starting point for any job search or
career decisions that you make.

Here are a few things you need to focus on when establishing your career
goals.

1. Understand your strengths and passions

You are likely to achieve more if you play to your strengths. After all, these
are what give you an advantage over others. Also, if your work is related to
things you enjoy, you are likely to put in more effort and hence achieve better
results. Listing your strengths and passions is a good starting point to
establishing your career goals.

2. Understand your competencies

The world is changing rapidly with new types of roles being created, and
other roles becoming obsolete. Instead of focusing only on your experience,
try and identify your competencies and analyze what sort of roles and
industries can these be translated into.

3. Analyse where you are now

Analyse the current situation you are in. Does it allow you to maximise your
potential by playing to your strengths and passions? What do you like about
your current role? What is missing?

Ensure you note down your answers so that you can review your thoughts.
This exercise should help you uncover your true motivators rather than “white
noise” related to your current paycheck or your latest boss.

4. Visualize where would you like to be in the next 5-10 years

Think forward to life 5-10 years from now. Where do you see yourself then?
What would make you happiest? How do you define success? How do you
want your career to evolve? Is this aligned with your strengths and passions?
Ask yourself these questions to establish a career goal that is concrete and
measurable.

5. Examine the gaps & build an action plan

Once you have a concrete idea on where you want to reach, examine what
skills or experience you need to develop to reach your objectives. You can
take steps towards acquiring these skills by signing up to courses or
attending other trainings and certifications. Similarly, when searching for new
job opportunities, make it a top priority to assess how any potential job can
help you reach your longer-term goals.

6. Reassess periodically
Now that you have a clear understanding of where you want to go, ensure
you have an action plan to get there and take the time to periodically assess
your progress.

It is also worth revisiting your career goals every few years and definitely
before starting any new job search as these may change over time and as a
function of your life stage and experiences.
