PLOT
Introduction
- The Moretas family was enjoying the
days of the St. John’s Festival.
Donya Lupeng awake feeling faint
with the heat, a sound screaming in
her ears. In the dining room, the
three boys already attired in their
holiday suits, were at breakfast, and
came crowding around her all at
once.
Rising Action
- The sight of the men horde
celebrating the feast of St. John
annoyed Donya Lupeng.
- Guido, the young man, makes
suggestive comments to Donya
Lupeng popping up his elbows,
dragged himself forward on the
ground and solemnly kissed the tips
of Donya Lupeng’s shoes. This
made Donya Lupeng leave abruptly.
She felt that there is something
missing to her as a woman and
became jealous and curious of the
Tatarin ritual.
Climax
- Donya Lupeng decided to join the
Tadtarin ritual. Don Paeng tried to
stop her but the fellow women
ganged up on him.
Paeng bleeding and with bruises
and they immediately went home
- with Donya Lupeng.
Falling Action
- As the two return home, Paeng says
he must whip his wife because he
loves her and feels that she needs to
be put in her place. To this, she
shouts and says that she wants to
be adored and not respected.
Denouement
- Donya Lupeng gained control of his
husband and made him kiss her
feet.

Introduction
- Ernie and Rosa were traveling back
to Dias through the Capitan Tiago .
He placedRosa in the third class
section. The captain, Capitan Tiago,
who is a fat little man in his fifties,
conversed with Ernie about America,
the captain’s old freighter, and his
experience in the high seas.
Rising Action
- Rosa got seasick, so Ernie fed her
first before dropping her off at the
bus station.Rain poured, Idrus
fetched Ernie with a carabao to go a
few hundred yards to the horse. But
then, the horse became wild which
caused them to dash into a
mangrove tree. His father held up a
lantern so he could see his way.
Then, his father and he went to a
place that has dug out pits.
Climax
- Ernie went to the sea to fish then he
saw Pepe come home. A strong
current camewhich tossed the boat.
The closer he got to the shore, the
waves became bigger. Hecannot
control the boat anymore so he
jumped into the water resulting in
him nearly drowning.
Falling Action
- Drenched with the seawater, he
heard Pepe’s radio playing cool jazz
which he found strange. He saw
Pepe and Gaya sitting quietly on the
porch. He was furious because he
almost died yet they did not even
notice him.
Denouement
- Ernie did not tell anyone about what
happened.

- Some things are better left unsaid.
Some thoughts should not be
vocalized because it can cause a
difficult conversation resulting in
misunderstandings. Aside From that,
we must embrace the difference in
one’s culture. The selection also
serves as a reminder of the dangers
inherent in traveling and losing a
sense of identity. So,we must not
forget what our identity is.

PLOT
Introduction
- Fil and Tony were both old Filipino
men living in Chicago ever since
World War IIended. Fil described
himself as an ugly old man and
described Tony as a good-looking
gentleman that looked younger than
he was. One day, they woke up on a
snowy day and Fil told Tony that the
dancers are coming today in
Chicago.
Rising Action
- Fil constantly talked about the
dancers to Tony, and then he had an
idea to invite the dancers into their
apartment to have some quality time
with fellowFilipinos.
Climax
- Since Tony went to the doctors, Fil
had time to meet the dancers. When
he got there and saw all the
dancers, he completely forgot what
he wanted to say and lost all train of
thought. So when he finally
managed to gather up all the
confidence he had left to invite them
to his house, they would just move
away and ignore the old man.
Falling Action
- Despite the disappointment he had
earlier that day , Fil had another
idea. He went back to the theatre
and watched the dancers perform,
then he recorded the performance
on his tape recorder so that he
would have the sounds with him to
help him remember the dancers, the
show, and bring back memories.
Denouement
- When Fil got home, Tony was
already sleeping. He then decided to
listen to the recorder until Tony
shouted to shut his recorder off. He
asked Tony what the doctor said but
Tony asked Fil about the dancers
instead. As he looked down at the
tape recorder, Fil noticed that the
spools were spinning and that Tony
was dying. He finally realized that he
had pressed erase, and also his
friend was gone.

- Felipe – the main character and was
orphaned by his uncle due to his
mother's early death. He is to inherit
his father’s land that is currently

symbolizes people who do not want
to depend on Americans –
thePhilippines itself.
- Ligaya – Felipe’s lover who
symbolizes women, during the time
of the American Colonization, indios,
and freedom.
- Tiyo Samuel – Felipe’s uncle who
manages the land owned by Felipe’s
father, andowns a factory. He
symbolizes America's power.
PLOT
Introduction
- The story started with an event of a
protest, with Felipe seeing the
protestors being handled by men in
uniform. He then becomes engulfed
in darkness as he loses
consciousness. He sees and smells
the blood in his hands, then the body
of his Tiyo Samuel in a pool of blood.
People then questioned him as to
why he killed his uncle. Flashbacks
follow the event, with Ligaya and
Felipe talking about the land and
factory of Tiyo Samuel. Another
flashback follows, with Felipe and
Tiyo Samuel talking about the land
Felipe is to inherit.
- Rising Action – Tiyo Samuel’s image
on Felipe’s mind turns to the face of
anAmerican. Felipe and Ligaya were
seen by Tiyo Samuel and insisted
the two should be separated.
Climax
- Felipe was running away, followed
by his uncle. Tiyo Samuel then
scolded him for not doing what he
was expected to do. Felipe then
signs papers assisted by his uncle,
to be given to the Americans. He
sees Ligaya in his imagination,
sympathizing, and understanding
him. The next scene is brought back
to the protest of the parity rights,
now with Felipe participating. He
was fetched by Tiyo Samuel and
went to their house, only to see
Ligaya – now pregnant.
Falling Action
- Tiyo Samuel does not allow the two
to be married, which then
angersFelipe. Fed up with his uncle,
Felipe hallucinates and hears people
screaming and protesting.
Denouement
- Felipe kills his uncle.
SETTING
- The story is set during the time of
American colonialism, around 1946
when the parity rights were signed in
the Philippines. The characters
(except Ligaya) were considered
part of the middle to high class. The
mood of the story started as
dark,turns to bright, and reverts to
dark again as the story ends.
POINT OF VIEW
- The story is told in a third person
omniscient view and stream of
 consciousness – as the main
character’s thoughts are also
presented as if being in the head of
the character.
CONFLICT
- Both internal and external types of
conflict are present, as Felipe was
struggling to keep himself sane with
all his uncle’s manipulation and
other forces outside one’s
self.Classical, social, and
psychological kinds of conflict were
present. Felipe was struggling
against his fate of being like his
uncle, the ideas and practices of the
Americans, and his choices in life.
THEME
- Felipe as the Philippines, Ligaya as
freedom, and Tiyo Samuel as the
Americans – the author portrays the
situation of the country during the
time of colonization of theAmericans,
the implementation of imperialism,
and the struggling of the Filipinos in
their supposed “freedom” after being
colonized by the Spaniards.
MORAL OF THE STORY
- The moral of the story is fighting for
your rights is a good
exercise;however, one must never
resort to violence. The moral in the
story is freedom. It shows us how
freedom is a right, and not a
privilege and should be given to the
people. Another moral of the story is
that there should be equality
between everyone. Therefore, we
should change our negative views of
women and we should not
underestimate the things that they
are capable of. Lastly, the
oppression being brought by
patriarchy should be addressed.

 privileged people do not experience

- There are differences between
beliefs and reality. An educated
person knows which one to believe.
- It is not bad to believe in
superstitions but when we become
educated we ought to know that it is
absurd and just a product of
imaginations. In reality, only people
around us have the capability to hurt
us.

- Symbolism: Maritess as the abused

- In a corrupt system, empowerment
to the people is important. As
citizens, we must be responsible
enough to be knowledgeable about
the capabilities of the leaders who
want to govern the people.

- The theme of the story is poverty. It
is about the life of a Filipino laborer.
The story talks about the contractual
employed people that live in poverty
despite having to work day and night
for their families.
- It is about the night or a person who
is a construction worker who
suffered from hardships in his life,
injury, wounds in his work. It's hard
for him to sleep at night worrying
about his family.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
- In order to survive we can do
everything, but in a good way. We
don't mind the sufferings, we
continue to live and work with
perseverance and dedication to our
work.

- Social injustice. The newsboy who
died because of a reckless driver
and his photo was unexpectedly

- The government is careless in
implementation of penalties on law
violators. We should treat each and
everyone fair. Whether rich or poor,
 everyone deserves justice and
equality.

CHARACTERS:
- Mareng Mensiya - is the mistress of
a policeman. The story shows her
life as a mother and her fate after
the death of her husband.
- Eddie - younger brother of the
narrator. He was the one who told
the narrator about the death of
Mareng Mensiya.
- Aling Sela - owner of the house
where Mareng Mensiya stayed
before she died.
- Mely - the daughter of Mareng
Mensiya. She lives with an entirely
pampered life. Blame herself after
the death of her mother.
- Lino - Husband of Mely. A jeepney
driver.
- Luis - Became the husband of the
narrator. He is a factory worker.
- Olga - the only one in their area who
reached the university and got an
education. Yet she was not stuck in
poverty within that area.
THEME:
- A mother who suffers from asthma
and was left by her daughter and her
neighbor took care of her but then
stopped caring about her due to
envy until she collapsed and died.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
- Always give people you think what
they deserve. If they give you love
and care then don’t hesitate to
reward them with the same thing.
Especially our mother who took care
of us from the beginning of our life
until now.
